Lake Talk

A notable element in Nonantum is the Lake dialect. Lake Talk, as it is called, is an idiosyncratic language spoken in the village, particularly among Italian-American locals. The dialect's origins are unclear. It has been speculated that it is a blend of Italian and some World War II code, but others have seen similarities to Angloromani or Italian Romany ("gypsy") slang. Many people in the village are descendants from natives of San Donato Val di Comino, Italy.

According to a 2001 article in the Boston Globe some examples of words and phrases in Lake Talk include:

mush (pronounced to rhyme with push) -- "guy", can be positive or negative depending on context
wicked pissa, mush!--"extremely awesome, guy"
divia (div-ya) -- "crazy", "jerk, screw-up, or harmless screwball"
...

wicked pissa, mush!--"extremely awesome, guy"

can i just

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 01:23 (thirteen years ago)

Hmm, I'm dubious about wicked pissah belonging exclusively to these lake folks

Moodles, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 01:25 (thirteen years ago)

interesting how there was an article about those words in the newsy-wewsies

la goonies (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 01:25 (thirteen years ago)

wicked pissah is def not exclusive, but it works so good w/mush you cant really pass it up

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 01:26 (thirteen years ago)

I'm sure the Globe sees it as a bit of blue collar anthropology

Moodles, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 01:27 (thirteen years ago)

shapdude (shup-dude) -- "how's it going?"

folks, p sure this might just be regular english

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 01:28 (thirteen years ago)

It's not like she has a job. Half an hour a day to post on Facebook and the rest of the time she can work out.

Her daughter, Bristol, 21, told Us Weekly last week that her mom is "way hotter" than actress Julianne Moore.

"I don't think she's a good interpreter of my mom. I think my mom's way hotter than that," the Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars contestant told Us of Moore, 51, who impersonated Sarah in the HBO movie Game Change.

buzza, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 01:48 (thirteen years ago)

yeah but Julianne Moore doesn't take out the trash in those shoes

lag∞n, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 01:54 (thirteen years ago)

I was trying to think of a comeback to say to that statement but then I thought, her name is Bristol, and her mom is Sarah Palin, she's probably suffered more than enough in life.

swing state polls >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> national polls
― stop swearing and start windmilling (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, October 8, 2012 4:17 PM (6 hours ago)

it's the second poll with romney ahead. but yeah, the national polls aren't very importart.
― obamana (abanana), Monday, October 8, 2012 4:18 PM (6 hours ago)

I'd have to double-check, but I'm pretty sure Silver has always said that polls at the national and state level move together, though they might not be perfectly in sync--one leads the other, but the idea that this and that state stay static while other states begin to move noticeably doesn't work. This Michigan poll would seem to bear that out:

http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/poll-romney-narrows-gap-in-michigan-following-debate

No, I'm not Sullivan saying it's over, not at all. But this may be the equivalent of those few days in 2008 when McCain temporarily caught up. Last time it happened in September, and only lasted a few days.

clemenza, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 03:13 (thirteen years ago)

yeah national polls are conducted more often and by more people so the state polls should lag behind the shifts in the national ones. Basically behind by 4 points in national polls= very bad news. But he was up 5 in gallup's monday poll so who the fuck knows what's going on.

iatee, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 03:33 (thirteen years ago)

The thing I'm having a hard time getting my head around is that a single debate could have such an effect--especially one that, no matter how tepid you thought Obama was (no argument here), didn't involve a gaffe, didn't involve some endlessly repeatable soundbite from Romney, didn't involve much of anything except Romney exceeding very low expectations. Do people have their minds changed that easily?

clemenza, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 03:35 (thirteen years ago)

"Who the fuck knows what's going on"--works for me.

lag00ns link upthread addresses that - its not so much millions of people who changed their minds and more that republicans got pumped up

There is a republican "documentary" called "Obama's America" showing at the local megaplex... Gotta love that Citizens United ruling.

he is also missing a sizable chunk of gray matter, as evidence by his videos.
