Much of the improvement in Romney’s image is people going from hating Romney and voting for Obama to respecting Romney but still voting for Obama.

Yeah, sure, why not--I'd be okay with that.

I'll let the rest of you force yourself to watch this "major foreign policy address" - I have bathrooms to clean, which strikes me as a far better use of my time.

just one poll

iatee, Monday, 8 October 2012 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

swing state polls >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> national polls

stop swearing and start windmilling (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 8 October 2012 20:17 (thirteen years ago)

it's the second poll with romney ahead. but yeah, the national polls aren't very importart.

obamana (abanana), Monday, 8 October 2012 20:18 (thirteen years ago)

isn't the other poll rasmussen tho lol

stop swearing and start windmilling (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 8 October 2012 20:19 (thirteen years ago)

both of those polls are what are known on the internet as skewed polls, and I only care about unskewed polls

iatee, Monday, 8 October 2012 20:19 (thirteen years ago)

iatee, SMC...just waiting for lagoon's reassurances now.

The other poll was PEW, who recently had Obama up by 8. Anyway, Gallup's much better: http://www.gallup.com/poll/154559/US-Presidential-Election-Center.aspx.

Nate Silver is gonna be on Up w/ Chris Hayes on Saturday so I'm gonna hold off on paying attention so he can explain it to me

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Monday, 8 October 2012 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

Next time I have a job interview i'm going to tell the interviewer i would eventually fire him and shut down his business, since it seemed to work so well for Mitt.

You can also just make up degrees and stuff.

clemenza, Monday, 8 October 2012 20:29 (thirteen years ago)

Factcheckers will not determine my prospects of getting this job!

Johnny Fever, Monday, 8 October 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

pew -4 and gallup +5 is hard to figure

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i think i need to wait on nate before reading any poll data the gallup "tied if we look at things in a way we otherwise never do" news was a real ffs moment for me

da croupier, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:05 (thirteen years ago)

feel like people r m/l telling pollsters what they want to hear so they dont kill themselves out of boredom

lag∞n, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:09 (thirteen years ago)

if you think of the bell curve of poll results, pew -4 and gallup +5 are just on opposite sides of that curve. it's pretty clear that 'the real number' is in-between those two and it's not ridiculous that two individual polls would have a 9 point spread. it'd be ridiculous if 10 more polls came out and they all were -4 or +5 tho.

iatee, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:11 (thirteen years ago)

pre debate obama was trending toward his 08 margin which was p ridic all things considered ie there was a lot of slack in that rope - my predict romney nets ~1% off that debate all said and done

lag∞n, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:12 (thirteen years ago)

btw weird thing senate numbers seem to still be moving in the other direction, seeing no down ticket debate ripples

lag∞n, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:13 (thirteen years ago)

and according to nate silver the challenger tends to get a small bump fromt he first debate its just a thing that happens, human psychology press narrative etc

lag∞n, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:14 (thirteen years ago)

yeah w/ romney the situation was particularly well-suited for it because he just hadn't had a great press day, basically ever, and there were a lotta people waiting for an excuse to like him.

iatee, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:18 (thirteen years ago)

"respecting Romney" is as big an indicator of a crass electorate as "liking Obama"

cancer, kizz my hairy irish azz (Dr Morbius), Monday, 8 October 2012 21:19 (thirteen years ago)

its true i have a cool tshirt w/glow in the dark skulls on it says 'respecting romney' in a sick font

lag∞n, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:20 (thirteen years ago)

never thought i'd see the day when obama supporters would be scolding ppl who took that 'hopey-changey shit' seriously.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 8 October 2012 21:22 (thirteen years ago)

this is the politics thread, no hopey change shit allowed

i dont blame people for taking hopey changey serious, we do need change, and i dont think it was completely cynical on obamas part either, he was p naive abt it himself imho, i hope one thing that people whove had their feelings hurt take from the whole experience is a lot of the problems w/our government are structural, not just caused by bad politicians, although the structure does also tend to attract those

and i do think obama has changed some things for the better, tho obvs its not the massive overhaul of how the government does business that he promised, hes also done some inexcusably terrible things too

lag∞n, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:28 (thirteen years ago)

also it should be recalled that a lot of the sweet ass hopey feelings were tied to relief that bush wasnt around anymore, its east to forget how painful that dude was my lord

lag∞n, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:29 (thirteen years ago)

well the structural problems in our government have generally been put in place by bad politicians down the years

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 8 October 2012 21:30 (thirteen years ago)

and good politicians can take them away, do you see

Mr. Que, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:30 (thirteen years ago)

the biggest structural politicians were put in place by the worst politicians of all time, the founding fathers

iatee, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:31 (thirteen years ago)

they can only be un-put-in-place by a constitutional convention or a revolution

iatee, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:31 (thirteen years ago)

it sux

iatee, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:31 (thirteen years ago)

structural politicians = structural problems lol

iatee, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:32 (thirteen years ago)

they are also a problem

iatee, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:32 (thirteen years ago)

well the structural problems in our government have generally been put in place by bad politicians down the years

it's hard to express how horrible the founding fathers were and what a terrible document the constitution is

iatee, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:33 (thirteen years ago)

its funny how like every country thats tried democracy since then has been all oh yeah great idea were gonna go ahead and do the other thing

lag∞n, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:35 (thirteen years ago)

opo: electoral college, US senate

www.toilet-guru.com (silby), Monday, 8 October 2012 21:35 (thirteen years ago)

the electoral college only really fucks things up once a century, the senate fucks us every day

iatee, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:36 (thirteen years ago)

oh, please

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 8 October 2012 21:43 (thirteen years ago)

when in doubt, post James Madison pics

the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 8 October 2012 21:53 (thirteen years ago)

funny how every time we violate the 'terrible' old constitution it never seems to make anything better.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 8 October 2012 22:15 (thirteen years ago)

well because we violate it the wrong way, if obama violated the constitution by announcing that he was sending the national guard to go kill all the senators and that there was gonna be no more us senate, it very well make things better
