i don't really know what that is, but someimes those sorts of pains just disappear as quickly as they came. maybe a nerve thing?
― Superphysical Resurrection (NickB), Sunday, 7 October 2012 11:22 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I wouldn't sweat it unless it stays for a couple of days.
― Jeff, Sunday, 7 October 2012 11:25 (thirteen years ago)
after a bit of googling it sounds like peroneal tendonitis, my mate's a doc and he said basically just ice/elevation/anti-inflam meds
once this doesn't curb my exercise for too long i'm fine with it. meant to be rehearsing for a play today, perhaps a sitting rehearsal.
xpost good luck today jeff, btw

Thanks! Waiting around right now. Have to getting big city marathons so early.
― Jeff, Sunday, 7 October 2012 11:29 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, have a great run jeff! hows the weather?
― Superphysical Resurrection (NickB), Sunday, 7 October 2012 11:35 (thirteen years ago)
43degrees now. Shouldn't get out if the 40s the whole race. Pretty much ideal.
― Jeff, Sunday, 7 October 2012 11:37 (thirteen years ago)

― Superphysical Resurrection (NickB), Sunday, 7 October 2012 11:39 (thirteen years ago)

does anyone here run in minimalist shoes? i was thinking of ordering a set of the new balance minimus 4mm drop trail shoes, then i saw some reduced 0-drop sauconys in a running shop yesterday and am fighting temptation to go back and get them
― set the controls for the heart of the congos (thomp), Sunday, 7 October 2012 13:08 (thirteen years ago)
i have the sacucony hatoris, i really like them, its all abt fit tho theyre just the right shape for my foot
― lag∞n, Sunday, 7 October 2012 13:10 (thirteen years ago)
yeah those were the ones. they have them in a 10.5 which is my nominal size but i feel like i should probably check and see if that is actually the right size for crazy flat shows. i keep trying to justify it to myself on grounds of 'while i am there i can try on some new balance ones and learn how the fit is so i don't order the wrong size of those', and then i will end up talking myself into buying two pairs of shoes i can't afford?
― set the controls for the heart of the congos (thomp), Sunday, 7 October 2012 13:14 (thirteen years ago)
those sacuconys def run small i had to get a larger size than usual and theyre still p snug, id make an effort to try any minimal shoes on rather than just order from the internet for sure
― lag∞n, Sunday, 7 October 2012 13:18 (thirteen years ago)
the 1st gen new balance were to narrow for me tho now i guess they come in widths
― lag∞n, Sunday, 7 October 2012 13:20 (thirteen years ago)
yeahhh i guess i'll go try things on and drop some money on SPORTS NUTRITION crap if i end up not buying anything so as to not feel bad. god what a fun hobby this is
― set the controls for the heart of the congos (thomp), Sunday, 7 October 2012 13:31 (thirteen years ago)

― Jeff, Sunday, 7 October 2012 18:45 (thirteen years ago)
oh no! :(
― Superphysical Resurrection (NickB), Sunday, 7 October 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)
damn... what happened?
i sympathise if it's injury, couldn't even fucking walk to the shops today. i'm limping from kitchen to my room, what a joke. missed my rehearsal and prob will be working from home tomorrow.
― Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Sunday, 7 October 2012 20:43 (thirteen years ago)
sorry jeff, i hope you're ok.
― you all a buncha takers (say the sad bells of romney) (Hunt3r), Sunday, 7 October 2012 21:56 (thirteen years ago)
Long story short, had a fantastic race for 15 miles and was on pace for a 3:55. Then started getting dizzy, walked for a few seconds, ran again and suddenly everything on my lower body hurt. I managed to make it to mile 23 (my last mile took 20 mins!) Couldn't stand it anymore, so I DNF'ed near a train stop so I could get home. Totally content with my decision. My time would have been beyond shitty and I don't care about a medal. I just wanted to have an awesome race, and that wasn't going to happen at that point. Live to run another day.
― Jeff, Sunday, 7 October 2012 22:19 (thirteen years ago)
I think I would have a v hard time being so even-tempered after putting in so much time and effort training.
― tobo73, Sunday, 7 October 2012 23:14 (thirteen years ago)
disappointed for you man, but if you were suffering like that, and you've done one before, i think that was a great call.
― you all a buncha takers (say the sad bells of romney) (Hunt3r), Sunday, 7 October 2012 23:15 (thirteen years ago)
the miles are still in the legs and maybe you can try again?

Bad luck Jeff, that must be very disappointing. Once the wheels come off in a marathon there's nothing you can do really to get going again properly, so don't have any regrets about not finishing - I know you weren't there just to make it round. I blew up in my second marathon at around the same point and ended up walking to the end in a time of five hours plus. I gained very little from actually finishing, it was basically just a very long depressing walk! So you didn't miss much...
Any idea what went wrong? Pace, fluid, fuel or just had a bad day?
― Superphysical Resurrection (NickB), Monday, 8 October 2012 13:28 (thirteen years ago)
How are your legs today anyway, Ronan?
― Superphysical Resurrection (NickB), Monday, 8 October 2012 13:30 (thirteen years ago)
apart from that i think that training at too high a pace is the other important pitfall. it's better to 'hold back' while training and work on stamina first and try increasing your speed once your endurance is up to scratch. 7 months after picking up running again, i still find myself starting my runs way too fast now and then. it's hard holding back when running starts feeling really good but i think it's key when you want to develop your stamina ánd speed (eventually).
xx-post
― willem, Monday, 8 October 2012 13:31 (thirteen years ago)
That's disappointing Jeff, I feel for you. Way to push on as best you could, but it sounds like you made the right call.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 8 October 2012 15:55 (thirteen years ago)
still can't really walk without pain. i worked from home today and cancelled another rehearsal. kind of worrying a little bit, not sure whether i should go to a physio or not. i kinda think they'll just say rest ice compression elevation or whatever, which is what I'm doing as far as possible.
really can't afford to miss another rehearsal, worried about when i'll next be able to run too.
― Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 8 October 2012 16:18 (thirteen years ago)
running 23 miles is impressive. i can't even imagine what it feels like. there definitely is "a zone" at shorter distances. is the zone at mile 14 or 15 some truly higher plane?
― youn, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 23:50 (thirteen years ago)
i can walk again! maybe not run for a while tho, gotta be careful.
― Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 10 October 2012 10:44 (thirteen years ago)
Interesting you should say that... because I'm considering running the Indiana Monumental Marathon in 23 days. I'm not going to run at all until this coming weekend when I'll give an 8 or so mile run a go. If I feel good, I'm going to go for it.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 11:24 (thirteen years ago)
nice
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 13:33 (thirteen years ago)
yes, good plan!
― Superphysical Resurrection (NickB), Wednesday, 10 October 2012 13:39 (thirteen years ago)
Been ruminating on this all week. After doing some research, I'm almost certain it was hypoglycemia. Symptoms are:
- Looking sallow/washed out - check (Carl said that I looked the worst she has ever seen when she met me on the train platform.)- Sleepiness - check (Compounded by getting almost zero sleep the night before.) - Dizziness - check (I was almost falling over.)- Extreme fatigue - check - Muscle weakness - check - Slurred speech/difficulties speaking - check - Problems concentrating - check - Headaches - check - Confusion - check
I hadn't been eating breakfast before all my long runs, so I continued that for marathon morning. But since the marathon started later than I would start my long runs, I just ran out of fuel just over 2 hours in. I had been eating energy chews the whole race, but since I started the race in a glycogen deficit, it was too little too late. I feel incredibly stupid for letting this happen, I should have foreseen this. It was a wasted opportunity of a great race with great weather.
Anyway, I'm almost 95% certain I'm signing up for the Indy Monumental Marathon in 3 weeks. I have zero soreness from the marathon attempt, so I'm just going to do a longish run this weekend and then just begin another taper.
― Jeff, Friday, 12 October 2012 14:01 (thirteen years ago)
that's the kind of thing you say you should have foreseen but it makes perfect sense not to foresee it. i think i'm gonna sign up for a 5k on january 1. i was just lifting for a while because now i love lifting so much but tonight i did a nice 30 min run and it was fun. i even went uphill for a long time.
― horribl ecreature (harbl), Sunday, 14 October 2012 23:34 (thirteen years ago)
Feeling I should try some 5K's again. I always get a sick feeling in my stomach before them because I know it's just going to be 20 something minutes of pain.
― Jeff, Monday, 15 October 2012 12:09 (thirteen years ago)
yeah but that's why i decided against the half marathon, i can't make myself go slow enough in these things and it would be like 2+ hours of pain. my 29:59 even was so painful.
― horribl ecreature (harbl), Monday, 15 October 2012 20:30 (thirteen years ago)
anyone planning to run in the bsim events in april?
― youn, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 01:06 (thirteen years ago)
thinking abt going on a v hilly ~12mile run today, havent gone that far in like a year, will prob suffer miserably, am def not in top form, also its unseasonably warm which does not suit me, and yet

― horribl ecreature (harbl), Sunday, 21 October 2012 17:01 (thirteen years ago)
did 4 miles yesterday, first run since fucking up my feet two weeks ago, and all good so far. i had some pain after but it was only brief, feel fine today. will prob give myself another week before going out again just to be certain but overall feels sweet that i've only missed two weeks.
