To interrupt the Louis CK debates,
Reggie Watts did a brilliantly meta Ted Talk

Man, this Tig Notaro set is BRUTAL. I mean, I knew all the info about her terrible few months, but hearing her make it public for the first time—the night everyone learned about it—is fucking rough.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 8 October 2012 06:48 (thirteen years ago)
i'm watching this "mash up" show on comedy central, and hannibal burress is funny but why do these things keep finding it appropriate to stick in either animations or live action scenes depicting the story the standup is telling? does anyone like that? it makes everything notably less funny
― zachylon (zachlyon), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 07:01 (thirteen years ago)
the internet loves videos like that. there's some comedians where a video like that is their no. 1 YouTube hit. i personally think they're fucking terrible and distracting
― Mary Ty$ Band (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 12:22 (thirteen years ago)
They are terrible, but they do seem to be popular.
― controversial cabaret roommate (Nicole), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 12:36 (thirteen years ago)
i think your attention span has to be total dogshit if you like those
― Mary Ty$ Band (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 12:48 (thirteen years ago)
Comedy Central has done SO MANY shows animating standup routines over the years, can't believe they just started another in 2012 and it's called Mash Up. can't be as bad as Shorties Watchin' Shorties i guess. that stuff could be fun on Dr. Katz, at least.
― some dude, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 12:49 (thirteen years ago)
i think the elevator pitch for Shorties Watchin' Shorties ended with dude putting a gun in his mouth and the network executive promising to put the show on the air if he just calms down and promises not to kill himself
― Mary Ty$ Band (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 12:54 (thirteen years ago)
it's pretty amazing how well patrice o'neal's rep as a standup recovered from his 'foulmouthed animated baby' phase by the time he died
― some dude, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 13:09 (thirteen years ago)
i saw myq kaplan recently (only live standup i've ever seen, funny enough) and he was really really good.
definitely on the nerd humor tip but way better than that sounds. very very fast, dense, punny wordplay stuff.
― / me, / me. /. /. (goole), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 13:31 (thirteen years ago)

see, this shit fucks with my attention span! it's totally jarring to switch back and forth between oral storytelling and visual storytelling and whenever they cut to a scene i lose track of what the comedian is saying
and the scenes are never funny. i kept thinking "that would've been a funny joke but not anymore"
― zachylon (zachlyon), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 19:26 (thirteen years ago)
ya i cant really imagine any standup that would be improved by pictures of what they're joking about

I bought it and am happy I did, but it's definitely a weird document that made me uncomfortable on so many levels. Especially all the times she feels the need to comfort people clearly upset after she drops her tragic bomb on them, combined with the alternative, namely ripping on people for laughing inappropriately. It's almost as gentle as confrontational gets. Gotta admit I was on the fence almost the entire time until the last few seconds, when she gets shoots off one proper joke and, after all that came before it, immediately gets a traditional laugh. It sort of underscore the nature of standup for me in a way few acts ever have, this weird balance between performance and confession.
Apropos of nothing, I just got a whole bunch of classic Bill Cosby albums (which I grew up listening to from my dad's LP collection) and am looking forward to hearing what my kids think.

well alright the part where she starts talking about black people is a bit "i'm trying to get a pass on racism by acknowledging i'm being racist" which is a bit ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
― lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 10 November 2012 06:41 (thirteen years ago)
imo her whole self-deprecating stage persona is about admitting negative things about herself, whether true or not -- which sometimes gets into sketchy territory but for better or worse is not about trying to justify it or get a pass on it

Rory on the tv!
http://www.deadline.com/2012/11/abc-develops-family-comedy-starring-comedian-rory-scovel/
The network has bought Big Children, written/executive produced by Scott Marder (It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia) and starring actor-comedian Rory Scovel (The Life And Times Of Tim). Produced by ABC Studios, it centers on a thirtysomething “only child” (Scovel) who must move home and parent his parents after they retire and revert to acting like children with too much time on their hands.
