oh man he linked to them in the column, I am as bad as him

dmr, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

from the UK pov "you didn't build that" barely seemed to register over here compared to the "47%" quote IMO.

piscesx, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:38 (thirteen years ago)

you didnt build that was pushed hard by the gop but no one really gave a fuck

lag∞n, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

Wish Obama had made a "you don't give a fuck" gaffe so the whole Republican convention would have been call-and-response applause lines "WE GIVE A FUCK!" which sort of sums it up anyway, them caring a lot about shit no one else gives a fuck about

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:47 (thirteen years ago)

wow that milbank thing was unreadable.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

aside from their inclusion in the weird porous bullshit category of 'gaffes' they don't seem too similar to me. if it's just 'negative things that happened in a campaign' then yeah romney's was worse because it was a weird manifesto rather than a less than preferable phrasing of a sentence fragment.

unprotectable tweetz (schlump), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

“We’ve had 43 straight months with unemployment above 8 percent, and what does the president have to say to all this? He says ‘forward.’ I think ‘forewarned’ is a better term.”

huh? am i right people?

EVERYONE COOKING SCMABLED EGGS,CHEESE WITH TOASTER!! (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:50 (thirteen years ago)

lag∞n, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:50 (thirteen years ago)

its a lil too mechanical to be truly zingy imho

lag∞n, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

that's a shit ton of setup for not much payoff

EVERYONE COOKING SCMABLED EGGS,CHEESE WITH TOASTER!! (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

i mean yr punchline cant really be more like forewarned

lag∞n, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

a METRIC shit ton. like the EUROPEANS use, eh? huh? right?

EVERYONE COOKING SCMABLED EGGS,CHEESE WITH TOASTER!! (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

im having trouble w/the word forewarned i guess

lag∞n, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

He should have spent the last two months studying Young Money punchlines.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

Or Excelsior threads, I guess.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:53 (thirteen years ago)

more like "bloody foreskin". Like from his kenyan circumcision ritual. Huh? Am I right?

EVERYONE COOKING SCMABLED EGGS,CHEESE WITH TOASTER!! (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:53 (thirteen years ago)

"'Forward?' Forward is my dog's name!"

a shark with a rippling six pack (Phil D.), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:54 (thirteen years ago)

More like "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow... So Go Ahead And Leave Office!" Right? Am I right here?

EVERYONE COOKING SCMABLED EGGS,CHEESE WITH TOASTER!! (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:55 (thirteen years ago)

an actual good zinger wont have a punchline

max, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:06 (thirteen years ago)

i mean what are the actual memorable good debate zingers? 'there you go again' and 'you are no jack kennedy' right?

max, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:07 (thirteen years ago)

i never really understood why 'there you go again' was supposed to be a good zinger.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

i am so tired of this election talk. romney lost as soon as he won the primary. it's over, it's been over. /grumpy

okay I hadn't actually watched that video yet

wau

set me on fire RAAAAH (DJP), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

its a masterpiece

lag∞n, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

i never really understood why 'there you go again' was supposed to be a good zinger.

it drips with "who's your daddy?" condescension and the fact that carter didn't pop him one in the nose made it seem that he accepted the inferior position so implied.

Aimless, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

video's very good.
"born with a silver foot in his mouth" is a great zinger and that's a punchline

EVERYONE COOKING SCMABLED EGGS,CHEESE WITH TOASTER!! (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:24 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, it was mainly the amiable and unflappable way that Reagan delivered it that brought the audience over to his side. It showed that this nice, grandfatherly figure could slip the dagger in with a smile.

xp

o. nate, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:24 (thirteen years ago)

wow that video did cheer me up.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:30 (thirteen years ago)

i kind of get the feeling mitt romney just doesn't like other people.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:30 (thirteen years ago)

I'm hoping for some good ol' "WWII was a Democrat war" or "Poland is not dominated by the USSR" kind of lines.

pplains, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:31 (thirteen years ago)

Funny how there have been two debates where Poland has been the subject of memorable lines.

pplains, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:32 (thirteen years ago)

reagan 'i won't use my opponents youth against him' line against supposedly defused age issue. also 'i paid for that microphone' showed that other republicans in 80 primary were pussies and if reagan was gonna have to rip his opponents hearts out and shove them down their childrens throats he was totally willing to go there. not in a debate but reagan's 'a recession is when yr neighbor is out of a job. a depression is when you are out of a job. and a recovery is when jimmy carter is out of a job!' quip is one i'm kinda amazed romney hasn't repurposed if only to play up obama=carter comparison. adm. stockdale's 'who am i? why am i here?' zinger was pretty good.

balls, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:32 (thirteen years ago)

hey john kerry, wanna buy some wood?

pplains, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:33 (thirteen years ago)

i wonder what % of the electorate even knows who jimmy carter is much less why he is so bad and hated

lag∞n, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:34 (thirteen years ago)

if you unskew the numbers 100%

balls, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

phew

lag∞n, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

the other weird thing about 'there you go again' is that he says 'GOVERNOR, there you go again!' to carter. i wonder how many ppl thought 'oh, burn!' and how many ppl thought 'did he forget who he was talking to again?'

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

the JFK burn was pretty sweet

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:44 (thirteen years ago)

lol just watched this. wow rick perry really was one of the kind. also seeing quayle-bentsen clip for first time since 88 it's pretty amazing to see this look of 'OMG YES' come over bentsen's face as soon as quayle mentions kennedy.

While Mondale doesn't zing him, I loved how he provoked Reagan into one of the few flashes of anger he showed at president. Watch his face when he realizes the audience is clapping FOR Mondale.

rick perry is like someone doing an impression of will ferrell's impression of bush

iatee, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:58 (thirteen years ago)

Are they always going to have the navy blue backdrop for debates? I liked the sky blue curtains from 1980.
