nobody likes losing to me.

$V£N! (blueski), Monday, 11 April 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

no, your cockiness.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 11 April 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I have finished 10 games so far, and lost 8, drawn 1 and won 1. Am I the worst chesser on ILX?

Cathy (Cathy), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I suspect so.

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

: (((

Cathy (Cathy), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

you're way better than stevem cathy - i've beaten him 4 times already

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I have done some good moves in almost all these games, I just can't seem to win any. The last couple I lost (against non-ILXors), I was totally about to win like the next move and then somehow they managed to checkmate me.

Cathy (Cathy), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I played a few games yesterday on Yahoo (because you lot are too slow sometimes) and I had sort of the opposite situation -- I would be down a piece or two but I would nail them in the endgame. Perhaps I was playing "positional" or maybe I just have been studying endgames a smidge.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I need to study endgames, now.

Cathy (Cathy), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to re-challenge you, Casuistry, you're the only one to beat me, but I've got six games on the go right now. (xpost)

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I've played five matches against ilxors and lost four (and the one I won was down to a mistake by my opponent). In total I've completed 9 matches on redhotpawn and I've lost all but the one. In both my current games I would say that I'm heading towards defeat...
So I would highly doubt that Cathy's the worst at chess on ilx.
I've just started a game against you Cathy, that will prove that you're not the worst.

Greig (treefell), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, battle of the losers.

Cathy (Cathy), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I am the Aston Villa of chess.

$V£N! (blueski), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

6 games won, 7 lost. i keep rechallenging casuistry even though he beats me every time...

JuliaA (j_bdules), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I am so looking forward to afterfinals CHESS BONZANZA.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 14 April 2005 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Julia got me this time! Blindsided me when I thought I was being all clever.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 16 April 2005 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i was all proud of my knight positioning but then it so seemed like you were going to get me before i was going to be able to take advantage of it....

but not so! yay.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Saturday, 16 April 2005 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

you should see my knight positioning in my game vs cathy.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 17 April 2005 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Cute, Ken, very cute.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 17 April 2005 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

BASTARD. if only i'd moved my bishop and not the king. cursed feeble brain.

$V£N! (blueski), Monday, 18 April 2005 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

that's four people now i just can't pwn

$V£N! (blueski), Monday, 18 April 2005 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I could taste the death! I made one bad move early on and one pointless move in the middle and by all rights you should have had me, but when you moved your king so that it wasn't protecting your bishop then it was all lost for you. I had to keep remembering that you were a move or two away from mating me, though.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 18 April 2005 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

(I'm not sure moving your bishop would have ultimately helped, compared to moving your king to d8. I would have had to take your bishop and then you could have taken my rook with your king.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 18 April 2005 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

more hott chess action! challenge me! i'm JulesB74...

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 21 April 2005 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, bring it on!

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 21 April 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure I used to be better than Stevem! I don't seem to be any more, it's like he's been practicing or something.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 23 April 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It doesn't seem to be e-mailing me anymore when people move. Hrm.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 23 April 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Me neither

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Saturday, 23 April 2005 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris is good + I am tired = humiliation.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

To be fair, I used your method of grabbing some small advantage and then evening the playing field until it became a big advantage. If you had pushed that pawn instead of capturing with it, I would have pushed my pawn (putting you in check) and then I wasn't entirely sure but I felt that would have put me in a pretty strong place. Of course you made life much easier for me instead.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 25 April 2005 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone have any recommendations for interactive chess sites that teach you strategy/openings/endgame stuff etc? i was looking at an openings site but found it confusing. i like the chess problems here, which are cool because you can just see what's going on with little chess puzzles, rather than dealing with confusing annotations, the names for different moves, all that crap.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I knew you must have been studying!;)

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

not much, really, but i'd like to, if i can find non-intimidating websites to learn from...

JuliaA (j_bdules), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.chessops.com is pretty great for openings, except that it doesn't ever tell you why an opening move is bad, just "you can do better than that".

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there a pairing here that's closely matched? I've just been killed by Casuistry for the second time, without ever feeling I was in the game, and the same thing will shortly happen with Ken C. Meanwhile I've beaten Stevem four times with no problems. I need to find someone in between.

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Thursday, 28 April 2005 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

But you're the only one who's drawn with Ken!

I feel kinda closely matched by Casuistry, but he's been improving and I haven't, so it may no longer be the case.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 28 April 2005 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Chop chop Chu!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

some of us have a daytime job!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

GP, I've improved to the point where I might be equal to you, at best. I only beat you that once.

Jamie, have you played Julia yet?

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I'll do that once I get the chance to resign against Ken C (I've got six games on the go).

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Friday, 29 April 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Sundar tells me you are all quite good.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 29 April 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Fresh blood! Bring it on!

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 29 April 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just joined redhotpawn. I used to play to county standard when I was a teenager but I've hardly touched a piece since, so what my standard is these days is anyone's guess :)

Si Carter (Si Carter), Saturday, 30 April 2005 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I visited the Mazeworks page. I'm confused. I don't see the "h" file on the board. Is it supposed to be like that or is it something to do with my browser? For today's problem, for example, I don't see either side's king. Is it supposed to look like that?

I'm enjoying chessops though.

Si Carter, what's your redhotpawn name?

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the Mazeworks isn't working for me either. Are you on a Mac, Sundar?

C'mon, bring it on, my RHP name is casuistry and I would like more games please!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 06:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The notebook is totally the key to this.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

RHP Name = pwn66

Si Carter (Si Carter), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't played with the notebook yet, does it let you jot down your devious plans?

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)
