have been in a great groove lately. Cooler weather has helped a lot. im back up to 25 mi/wk, hopefully will get to 35 in a month or so. Loving it.

^co-sign. loving autumn. back to running ~three times a week. hoping to increase distance significantly over the next few weeks. then work on my speed.
― willem, Monday, 1 October 2012 14:30 (thirteen years ago)
What happened to your hand Hunt3r??
Did my first half-marathon for a couple of years yesterday. Have only been doing slow runs recently so had no idea how to pace myself, but when I went through the first two miles in less than 12 minutes, I knew I had overcooked it a bit! Ended up with 1.31 which was okay for a fairly undulating course. My hamstrings are don't feel very happy today though, I can hardly walk at all.

not sure how but managed to strain my achilles (i think) & havent run in 2 weeks, almost definitely the longest ive not run in 10 yrs. might be slowly driving me mad
did see a doctorb who just said to ice it & rest and did also prescribe some physical therapy <---anyone have any experience w/ this? i guess i'll do it, im frustrated that it just hasnt improved w/ time
― johnny crunch, Monday, 1 October 2012 14:37 (thirteen years ago)
Most things I've read about achilles strains recommend doing eccentric calf raises. Look them up on youtube!
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Monday, 1 October 2012 14:45 (thirteen years ago)
great real nameseccentric calf raises

not that sort of calf u big silly!
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Monday, 1 October 2012 14:52 (thirteen years ago)
it's a portrait of syntactical ambiguity! an exercise in vocabulary development! a head missing a tail! i love it. going to use it as example in class. sorry this has nothing to do with running.
i have not been running very much, lots of walking and biking. i think it turns out that i only enjoy running in colder temps.
― these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 1 October 2012 14:55 (thirteen years ago)
it is good: i have raised my calves eccentrically
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Monday, 1 October 2012 14:58 (thirteen years ago)
I let them sleep in my bed!

Xp great job on half nickb sounds like you did well fixing your pace.
I broke a few bones in my hand in a bike crash. so they did surgery to put metal bits in, then another to take some of em out, now I'm learning to make a fist again- about 3/4 of the way there. Even running wasn't so great for it as it sorta made my hand swell up.

Ow! Hope it's not too long before you can hold yr bars again. What the heck happened?
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Monday, 1 October 2012 15:32 (thirteen years ago)
i rode into a parked car in a bike lane at about 13 mph while looking at my phone (i could try to polish this turd by explaining circumstances, but no, really, i was THAT stupid). don't know when i can ride for real again, probably another month at least. i've been riding one-handed to the rail station and on errands with kids, but that's it.
― david brooks in a wu torture skit (Hunt3r), Monday, 1 October 2012 16:01 (thirteen years ago)
Ach, bad luck and a great many curses on cycle lane parkers.
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Monday, 1 October 2012 16:09 (thirteen years ago)
i did 2 sets of the eccentric calf raises last night and it really feels not perfect but a lot better today. the body is kindof amazing to me.
also spoke on the phone to my buddy who is a PT and former athletic trainer who said it prob isnt an achilles strain and marginally freaked me out by knowing too much, asking if my back hurts cuz of how nerves are linked, etc
― johnny crunch, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 16:09 (thirteen years ago)
a guy i started running with back two or three years ago kept it up when i stopped, ran a half marathon in 1.20 over the weekend, ffs
― Randy Carol (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 16:20 (thirteen years ago)
Holy shit you guys are fast.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 16:31 (thirteen years ago)
plz tell him to slow down
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 16:35 (thirteen years ago)
johnny crunch, i've read a lot of reports from people saying that after two weeks of the calf raises they never had achilles troubles again, so i hope it works for you too! i only know about them cos i've had strange twinges every now and then but they never really turned into anything much
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 16:38 (thirteen years ago)
if i could catch him i would, i'm sticking with five a side these days
― Randy Carol (darraghmac), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 16:38 (thirteen years ago)
man, I love playing football but i totally shudder at the thought of the injuries there [/risk-averse old man]
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 16:41 (thirteen years ago)
i stick to football with my two boys and their friends but as soon as they're big enough to be able to swing a foot anywhere near my balls then i am definitely quitting that shit
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 16:42 (thirteen years ago)
thx nickb -- the PT friend i have, who also runs a lot, did know abt them and thought that and icing could be all i need, whatever it is
sortof suspect it could have been brought on by my playing tennis a lot this summer in addition to running, different kind of impact than running 4 sure
― johnny crunch, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 16:43 (thirteen years ago)
absolutely killed it this morning, 7.5 miles in just over an hour. came from nowhere too, had about 6 pints of beer last night and a mate texted at 0830 asking if i wanted to go for a run, ten mins later i was out the door.
― Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Saturday, 6 October 2012 11:15 (thirteen years ago)

― lag∞n, Saturday, 6 October 2012 13:31 (thirteen years ago)
good luck jeff! don't know if you get pre-race nerves, but it's always such a relief when the gun finally goes off and you start running the race. that first mile with the crowds and nice fresh legs and everything - BEST THING EVER
― Superphysical Resurrection (NickB), Saturday, 6 October 2012 13:47 (thirteen years ago)
Slightly nervous. But I'm much more prepared for this marathon than I have for my previous two, so I should be good.
― Jeff, Saturday, 6 October 2012 15:52 (thirteen years ago)
Good luck Jeff!!
I just got back from a sunny brisk 45 min out there. Best weather!!
― these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Saturday, 6 October 2012 16:17 (thirteen years ago)

― lag∞n, Saturday, 6 October 2012 20:29 (thirteen years ago)
i once had a runner push me off my bike without warning during a very steep ascent- he didn't call track or jack shit. so when i inadvertently elbowed a runner in the head on a descent after calling track, i didn't sweat it. it's all in the game.
― you all a buncha takers (say the sad bells of romney) (Hunt3r), Saturday, 6 October 2012 21:34 (thirteen years ago)
(jk i don't elbow people, but i did get pushed off bike without warning- what a weirdo)
― you all a buncha takers (say the sad bells of romney) (Hunt3r), Saturday, 6 October 2012 21:43 (thirteen years ago)
btw have a great run jeff!
― you all a buncha takers (say the sad bells of romney) (Hunt3r), Saturday, 6 October 2012 21:47 (thirteen years ago)
so weird injury dampens my buzz about the run i mentioned earlier. basically if you drew a straight line downwards from the front of both ankles, the sole and side of my leg is aching as i walk. only came on about 5/6 hours after my run but it's the most acute injury i've ever had, could barely walk home from friend's house just now. i've never had any pain in this area before.
no real idea what to do, any general first response advice? i couldn't have prepared for this really, i felt perfect for the entirety of my run today and it only kicked in after.
― Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Sunday, 7 October 2012 01:26 (thirteen years ago)
i don't really know what that is, but someimes those sorts of pains just disappear as quickly as they came. maybe a nerve thing?
― Superphysical Resurrection (NickB), Sunday, 7 October 2012 11:22 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I wouldn't sweat it unless it stays for a couple of days.
― Jeff, Sunday, 7 October 2012 11:25 (thirteen years ago)
after a bit of googling it sounds like peroneal tendonitis, my mate's a doc and he said basically just ice/elevation/anti-inflam meds
once this doesn't curb my exercise for too long i'm fine with it. meant to be rehearsing for a play today, perhaps a sitting rehearsal.
xpost good luck today jeff, btw
― Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Sunday, 7 October 2012 11:26 (thirteen years ago)
Thanks! Waiting around right now. Have to getting big city marathons so early.
― Jeff, Sunday, 7 October 2012 11:29 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, have a great run jeff! hows the weather?
― Superphysical Resurrection (NickB), Sunday, 7 October 2012 11:35 (thirteen years ago)
43degrees now. Shouldn't get out if the 40s the whole race. Pretty much ideal.
― Jeff, Sunday, 7 October 2012 11:37 (thirteen years ago)
sounds lovely! also, KICK SOME ASS

does anyone here run in minimalist shoes? i was thinking of ordering a set of the new balance minimus 4mm drop trail shoes, then i saw some reduced 0-drop sauconys in a running shop yesterday and am fighting temptation to go back and get them
