i strongly reject any suggestions that there was any retardedness in this episode whatsoever. i live overseas and thought the china stuff rang true. i loved how they wrapped up (for once and for all!) the daddy's girlfriend arc. plus, this is destined to be the most fucked up run-it-every-december christmas special EVER

The guy with the three-wheeled truck misunderstood Louie. He thought Louie was referring to the closest river.

Louie: Excuse me. I'm looking for the Yangtze River.
Driver: I don't understand what you're saying.
Louie: Yangtze River, with ducks. Yangtze.
Driver: (A) River?
Louie: River. *in Mandarin*
Driver: River.
Louie: Yea.
Driver: I'll take you there. Take a seat in my ride.

Once they arrive, driver gets off the truck.

Driver: Follow me.

As Louie walks across the "river".

Driver: Slowly. (Or "take it easy". Something like that.)

Once they stop.

Driver: This is a river. River.
Louie: River? *in Mandarin*
Driver: Yes.
Louie: Yangtze River?
Driver: Yes.
Louie: That's it.
Driver: Yes, this is it.
Louie: OK.
Driver: If that's all, I'm going to leave now.

Driver walks away. Scene.

The second scenario is very sweet, especially if you understand what the people are saying. Louie is basically invited by a bunch of strangers to have a meal. There were no mentions of money, or anything monetary for that matter, in case you're wondering.

Louie meets nice old lady.

Louie: Hi.
Lady: Hi.

Lady leads Louie into the house.
Somebody: Someone's here to eat.
Guy in hat: Come over! Come over! Come over! Please take a seat.
Louie: OK.
Somebody: Take a seat.
Guy in hat (to lady): Grab a bowl. (or rice, could not tell)
Everyone: Eat! Eat! Eat!

A nice woman gives Louie some vegetables.
Another nice woman: Eat! Tasty!
Louie: Thank you very much.
Guy in black suit: Which country do you belong to?
Louie: What? I don't understand.
Everyone: Where did you come from?
Guy in white suit: Which country did you come from? America?
Louie: America. *in Mandarin*
Guy in white suit: England?
Louie: England *in Mandarin*
Guy in white suit: France?
Louie: France *in Mandarin, pronounces it wrongly* [perhaps pronouncing it like 'melon'?]

Everyone laughs.

Guy in hat: You came all the way to Beijing to my place to be my guest.

Louie repeats after the guy in hat.
Everyone cheers.

so i guess now we know why tape recorder was acting a little off that night she went out with louis? why she was double fisting it & getting hammered at the bar not long before? that little wistful look before she didn't jump off the building, etc?

from an interview w/pp in july, as it happens:

"She’s haunted. That’s what you see in that moment is not someone pretending so much but, you know, something that came up that made her shut all the doors. That kind of depth of pain in someone can be very real, and the happiness and the force that you see in how much she wants to live and connect is medicine. She’s reaching out. All of that is to save herself. You heard about her cancer, right? She tells him everything, she really opened up. And I don’t know if you’ve ever seen this, but a person can frost over. Like, I said too much!"

i actually don't remember if she mentions it in that episode or not

She talks about being ill as a child in the date episode.

was just about to say, she tells louis about having cancer as a teenager in pretty deep detail on their date. wow, that's really haunting!

what is rad is how in a ny mag interview, iirc, she also played dumb, convincingly, about whether her character would return, & said she wasn't in the season again with a kinda showbiz "but we'll see!, i hope so!" attitude. the way she's threaded through this season - inc in her absence, cf the sevigny ep = is dope. louis is a big fitzgerald fan, i think, & he has the KILL ALL YOUR DARLINGS thing down.

i thought for sure the sequence in the hospital and bus was a dream though. surprised so many people are taking it as legit.

I only enjoy pointing out how typical a group of people or TV shows are so I can than summarize it back to them so I seem superior for being more self-aware. Google analytics data should be only used to make people feel like sheep. Ask your doctor if ilx is right for you.

The doll-fixing scene may have been the best goddamn-frustrating-fucking-piece-of-junk scene I've seen since Unfaithfully Yours. That was spectacular.

i've been pummeled here before for being down on season 3...much preferred the first two seasons. it seems as if there were fewer and fewer comments here after each week's episode this season, which to me suggests people might feel the same even though they stan just as hard if you dare criticize it. the vociferousness(sp?) and ultra-protectiveness is kinda like the fans of "girls", come to think of it!

were you "pummeled" or did people just disagree with you

well people came down pretty hard on me...it's all upthread. (crosses fingers that i am not just misremembering being "pummeled" ha ha!)

i personally just lost the will to keep saying "it isn't about whether or not it's funny" after each "this wasn't funny" post, but everyone elses' mileage may vary. inasmuch as i'm 'protective' or w/e, it was just lots of the criticism seeming invalid, rather than particularly jarring or eyeopening, &c, because as a thing it seemed like it was being just as interesting & vital & engaging as it ever was, albeit in different ways, & probably at the expense of its previous virtues. this season it was more cinematic, more thoughtful & more incisive, partic on stuff like relationships & impulses. & yeah it probably wasn't as funny (like: basically no stand up, to start) but that isn't any kind of failure imo. it is a v moving show to me.

break is cool, i imagine he has some other shit happening (there was a mention of an animation project in a trailer for some animated charlie kaufman thing) & might get back in step w/his productive tour/special/tour/series rhythm. has anyone seen him this time out?

Possible lack of show posts by people like me, who don't have cable and wait for each season to end before watching them all via extra-legal measures.

I think one of the things I like about Louie is that it sort of has the feel of a comedian trying out new material. It isn't always funny, and sometimes it doesn't work. It isn't carefully diagrammed. A roomful of writers didn't workshop to decide which version of the same joke is the funniest. It's incredibly personal and specific, and that makes it unusual and fearless, but also messy.

I can see why he thinks Lena Dunham is so great, she does the same thing...this veneer of warts-and-all self-debasement that is actually kind of a roundabout patting onesself on the back.

like the dad episode for instance which just did an amazing end-run around anything you could possibly expect from a 'louie confronts his dad' episode

There was actually talk of a Girls-Louie crossover episode happening, like the Flinstones-Jetsons. Louie takes his daughters to an XX concert, trying to be a "coo dad," and meets Lena Dunham's character.
