I've just realised I've never put my Twitter name on here

I'm @NickyD, follow me.

Alba, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 08:37 (thirteen years ago)

i'm @rmkf

this might be the thread to post this: http://www.resistradio.com/news/questioning-the-trollocaust-did-leotraynor-really-suffer-vile-hate-campaign

anyone been following this story? i took it at face value but have to now agree it does sound a bit fanciful.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 08:46 (thirteen years ago)

I've not even heard of that story. But really, half of that exposé article doesn't prove a thing - the fact that someone uses twitter "unusually" isn't actually unusual. Nor is the fact that people make bad decisions or don't think things through. The police thing, well, it certainly used to be the case that police often didn't respond very proactively to stalking behaviour, but there have been changes to laws/protocols that make it more likely that they would respond, so I'll take that. Really the dude writing the article could've just put the thing about the IP address/home adress, because that is damning enough to place serious doubts about the veracity of Traynor's claim.

emil.y, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 09:21 (thirteen years ago)

I have followed you, kelpolaris. I am also the best ILXor to follow in return, obviously. @sickmouthy.

comedy is unnatural and abhorrent (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 09:30 (thirteen years ago)

As the comments suggest, the bogus "Oh you can trace an IP address to a single house" might just be a discreet smokescreen for the scenario where he recognises the IP address because his friend comments on his blog.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 09:42 (thirteen years ago)

That is also true. Ah well. I shall go back to having no opinion on this thing I have never heard of before.

emil.y, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 09:47 (thirteen years ago)

the fact that someone uses twitter "unusually" isn't actually unusual.

it is pretty unusual that he would repeatedly, as in more than once a day, keep following random accounts, when he was getting abusive messages.

the irish police wouldn't have a great reputation, especially with this kind of thing, but again, surely the extent of that sort of abuse would be enough for them to step in?

i mean, you'd have the fucking book thrown at you in court for what that stalker is alleged to have done, hence why wouldn't the police get involved? you'd surely be jailed, on a number of counts?

just to go back to the story up thread lol you cannot "trace an IP" to someone's address. Internet do not work that way! if you took that IP to the ISP that supplied it with a warrant? they may then hand over user info. but it's not like fucking Hackers or CSI.

Una Stubbs' Tears (Trayce), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 21:46 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, he's definitely glossing over something there. Maybe he doxxed them

stet, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 21:52 (thirteen years ago)

He was getting trolled off Twitter as well, though, in places where you can trace IP addresses. Then you could cross-match them with other non-troll incoming IP addresses, such as friendly communications from his friend, the troll's dad.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 23:55 (thirteen years ago)

Does anyone know if the Twitter API lets clients use the new(ish) "search tweets of people you follow" function? It's the only reason to use the Twitter website, I think.

someone explain to me the point of 'favoriting' someone else's tweets -- like people will favorite mine (and sometimes also retweet, sometimes not, sometimes retweet and not favorite), but i just retweet things i like and never favorite them, should i feel like a dick? or is it just a way of bookmarking stuff so that it's easy to find later?
