The iOS 6 update just showed up on my iPod Touch this morning. Should I go ahead and I upgrade or are there any issues to consider?

I'm kind of confused about the whole Google Maps hullabaloo. I understand that it isn't built in with the OS, but can't you just get it from the App Store. If that's the case, what's the big deal?

Moodles, Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:46 (thirteen years ago)

You can't just get it from the App Store; it is not a standalone app as of yet. Instead best thing to do is essentially 'bookmark' maps.google.com to the desktop, which you can do in Safari.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:47 (thirteen years ago)

is that true for YouTube also or is there a downloadable app for it now?

Moodles, Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:48 (thirteen years ago)

There's a Youtube app.

so other than losing Google Maps, what are the benefits of upgrading on an iPod Touch? Or is it pointless?

Moodles, Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:53 (thirteen years ago)

there are some performance improvements on older iphones, not sure about ipods

At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment.

Tim Cook OTM.

Jeff, Friday, 28 September 2012 13:20 (thirteen years ago)

Google notably not mentioned once.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 28 September 2012 13:21 (thirteen years ago)

Except in the fourth para. After Bing, MapQuest and Waze (?!)

Autumnal the faun (ledge), Friday, 28 September 2012 13:22 (thirteen years ago)

"Another option is an atlas from your local bookstore."

Jeff, Friday, 28 September 2012 13:24 (thirteen years ago)

"we are sorry that apple maps sucks so bad"

"apple maps is now being used by over 100 million people"

barthes simpson, Friday, 28 September 2012 13:29 (thirteen years ago)

idk, "Use these apps or these websites" is kind of the order of preference for most iOS users. If Google had a standalone app, I'd imagine it'd be at the top of that application list.

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Friday, 28 September 2012 13:33 (thirteen years ago)

Without a doubt. Would be nice to see it on the top of the free apps chart for a few months.

Jeff, Friday, 28 September 2012 13:54 (thirteen years ago)

"Another option is an atlas from your local bookstore."

I did loll.

Alba, Friday, 28 September 2012 14:02 (thirteen years ago)

Er, lol.

Alba, Friday, 28 September 2012 14:03 (thirteen years ago)

Is there a reason (contractual?) why, now Apple are conceding that there's problem, they can't put the old Maps app in the App store as a free download for those who want "an alternative"?

Alba, Saturday, 29 September 2012 09:27 (thirteen years ago)

Their contract only has a year to run, so I'm guessing they want to avoid another shitstorm in 2013 when they yank it.

stet, Saturday, 29 September 2012 11:41 (thirteen years ago)

Hmm. Does that mean the Maps app on iPhones running any version of iOS prior to v6 will stop working in a year's time?

Alba, Saturday, 29 September 2012 14:19 (thirteen years ago)

I mean, there must be some people still on the iPhone 3G who can't update to iOS6 even if they wanted to.

Alba, Saturday, 29 September 2012 14:21 (thirteen years ago)

Not sure -- neither side has revealed the terms. I wondered if they might put an Apple Maps on the store for users on old devices, but then they might also just not care.

stet, Saturday, 29 September 2012 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

I'm going to try upgrading my touch and just hope I don't regret it. I'm getting tired of all the app crashes I've been experiencing, so perhaps this will help.

Moodles, Saturday, 29 September 2012 16:48 (thirteen years ago)

I just upgraded to mountain lion did I make a horrible decision

barthes simpson, Saturday, 29 September 2012 16:50 (thirteen years ago)

how do I shot imessage cross device sync

barthes simpson, Saturday, 29 September 2012 16:52 (thirteen years ago)

awesome, iTunes is forcing me to do a full restore on my touch :>/

Moodles, Saturday, 29 September 2012 17:19 (thirteen years ago)

ok, restore was a success, it seems to be coming back with all my apps and didn't lose my photos. Unfortunately I have to re-sync all of my offline files for Spotify, which is going to take a really long time.

Moodles, Saturday, 29 September 2012 17:44 (thirteen years ago)

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 07:30 (thirteen years ago)

Google Street View just showed up on my iOS 6 browser maps. yeeaahhh!

Lee626, Thursday, 4 October 2012 13:30 (thirteen years ago)

What does that mean?

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 4 October 2012 13:32 (thirteen years ago)

that ppl who upgraded to the latest iPhone/iPad operating system, and anyone with a iPhone 5, can use see a ground-level view from where they are or any other location. This capability was yanked from the latest OS release, along with certain other features that the old Google-based maps had that the new Apple maps don't. There's no Google maps app as of yet, but you can access them to some extent through the Safari browser. But until today street view was unavailable that way.

Lee626, Thursday, 4 October 2012 13:37 (thirteen years ago)

can see, not can use see

Lee626, Thursday, 4 October 2012 13:37 (thirteen years ago)

so i've got this problem on my MBPR: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4148522?start=0&tstart=0

weird rendering stuff, even on ILX when typing a new message sometimes. really frustrating.

Mordy, Saturday, 6 October 2012 15:28 (thirteen years ago)

Me too. May download Chrome again soon out of frustration if there's not an update.

www.toilet-guru.com (silby), Saturday, 6 October 2012 15:42 (thirteen years ago)

New Chrome is so buggy as to be unusable for me

stet, Saturday, 6 October 2012 16:28 (thirteen years ago)

Welp.

www.toilet-guru.com (silby), Saturday, 6 October 2012 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

yeah mordy i talked about that upthread or on the other apple thread

seems to happen a lot on facebook when updates are taking place as i type stuff or when i scroll really fast through pages of text

the late great, Saturday, 6 October 2012 16:49 (thirteen years ago)

so i finally installed parallels and a copy of windows xp to play awesome old GOG games on my mac. xp won't let me play the latest stuff i imagine, but for old infinity engine stuff it's classic!

Mordy, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 23:22 (thirteen years ago)

most games still work fine on XP! only a few DX11 games have boxed me out

Nhex, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 23:52 (thirteen years ago)

Is anyone else having problems w/ iOS6 on iPhone 4? Since I started using 6, some apps won't download or update. Some finally finished, but one photo app got 1/2-way through an update and stopped and Google Drive refuses to download. I've tried deleting them & re-downloading, waiting for days, and power cycling, but nothing works.

Or maybe it's my phone, but I kind of doubt it.

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Thursday, 11 October 2012 05:50 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah there's a bug. The workaround apptly is to sign out of App Store, reboot, sign back in.

stet, Thursday, 11 October 2012 07:15 (thirteen years ago)

Great, thanks. I actually just reset my password yesterday, so I'd unwittingly already fixed the problem before I posted. Problem apps were on another screen so I didn't notice.

Apple rumored to be rolling out a slew of updated/new stuff next week: iMac, Mac Mini, 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro, iPad Mini.

circa1916, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 14:35 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, that MacMini news is top of my list for sure. Was just about to buy a new one -- glad I held off!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 14:38 (thirteen years ago)

I'm planning on replacing my Pro, all 476 pounds of it, with a 27" iMac, so I've been following the rumor mill for a few months now.

WmC, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 14:50 (thirteen years ago)

Will they finally do the redesign this time...

Nhex, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 14:51 (thirteen years ago)

tempted by the new iMac but wondering if I can get back to desktop after years of stay-at-home MBP laptop

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 15:07 (thirteen years ago)

pick up an imac + mini ipad, you're set

Nhex, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 15:09 (thirteen years ago)

what if the new mac mini is a miniature version of an imac with a tiny screen and tiny keyboard and mouse
