Reddit Users Attempt to Shame Sikh Woman, Get Righteously Schooled

JuliaA, Thursday, 27 September 2012 03:53 (thirteen years ago)

i found that story kinda strange to consider - in that i think it's really profound & so my reflex 'ha OWNED reddit' response feels p insufficient - but it does sorta illuminate the different plains of existence you can occupy, as a computer user chuckling in the basement or as someone religious & content

let's get the banned back together (schlump), Thursday, 27 September 2012 03:57 (thirteen years ago)

sorta

planes too

mookieproof, Thursday, 27 September 2012 04:21 (thirteen years ago)

that sikh story is heartwarming right up until the part where the o/p turns around and starts being like "this isnt what reddit is about" when its like uhhhhh pointing and laughing at women and religious ppl? p sure this is exactly waht reddit is abt

OP's conversion on the "Sikh woman" story seems somewhat unconvincing to me

like in my mind someone who posts that pic (i.e. sees someone they think is ugly and/or ambiguously gendered in public, thinks "this is hilarious!", takes a clear and recognisable photo, and posts it to the internet for bros to lol at and upvote the poster's genius for capturing the hilarity of) is not someone who suddenly has a sincere and lasting epiphany about the equal personhood/rights/feelings of people even if they look funny and possibly even if they don't post eloquent and politely educational responses on the internet

but maybe I am kidding myself if I don't think everyone who grew up in the cameraphone era is in the "funny-looking strangers are totes cool to upload photos of to the internet for lulz" camp by default, even those decent enough to change their mind if called on it

Well his apology seems more like "sorry for bringing the quality of reddir down" than for what he actually did wrong

I looked at it. Seems to be the kind of LCD thing that becomes addictive to some people. Internet obsession is very old for me - like I had it a zillion years ago, in college, when I was semi-addicted to e-mail.

ok this is definitely the best place for it.

caek, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:11 (thirteen years ago)

hope that 'you own a fedora' becomes a lasting insult

would also love dom's take on this phenom

barthes simpson, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:29 (thirteen years ago)

a fedora is a fine sort of hat. sharp, stylish, classic. but do not attempt a fedora until you are 55 or older. 65 is even better.

Aimless, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:32 (thirteen years ago)

it's a flashy statement worn by people who don't seem to understand how aesthetic things work and so look silly. made worse by a "i know better than you" refusal to follow general opinion that it looks terrible. its social fail mixed with hubris or simply not knowing any better. never seen anyone like this, personally.... young dorky people do weird things, i guess.

Spectrum, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

.. it's just a hat.

gesange der yuengling (crüt), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

it's just a hat... that was popular at a time when men who did not wear overalls wore suits at all times. Try wearing your fedora with overalls. It's a hell of a look!

Aimless, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:03 (thirteen years ago)

i know, i know, easy target, but holy shit that xkcd comic linked in the boingboing article

fadanuf4erybody, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:45 (thirteen years ago)

those pictures, just brutal

goole, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:48 (thirteen years ago)

what about the xkcd comic?

barthes simpson, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:50 (thirteen years ago)

i'm getting there, hang on

goole, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:52 (thirteen years ago)

ok yup, super gross.

goole, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:54 (thirteen years ago)

oh, I just meant that, as much as I loathe xkcd, I don't see what's O_o about it

barthes simpson, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:54 (thirteen years ago)

Not to be all cap'n-save-an-xkcd here, but you guys are getting the very obvious thing that that strip is criticising that sort of behaviour, not recommending it, right?

emil.y, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:55 (thirteen years ago)

the #1 pua forum link is making it hard for me to breathe, shiiiiiiiit

xp emil.y i wondered that but i'm not giving that guy the benefit of the doubt tbf

goole, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:56 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, basically what emil.y said

barthes simpson, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:57 (thirteen years ago)

emil.y: yeah, i get that's the intent, but it's just knowing enough--taken with other stuff i've seen of that comic--to just kinda make me think he is that guy all the time, y'know? i have trouble divorcing it from "creepy xkcd guy"

fadanuf4erybody, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:57 (thirteen years ago)

maybe you guys read too much xkcd

barthes simpson, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:58 (thirteen years ago)

only via ilx! so yeah true

goole, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:59 (thirteen years ago)

jim davis gets a lot of hate but i never heard him referred to as that "creepy garfield guy"

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:59 (thirteen years ago)

dave sim though...

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 20:01 (thirteen years ago)

i wondered that but i'm not giving that guy the benefit of the doubt tbf

But... it's not even hidden in subtext. It's very very blatant.

it's just knowing enough--taken with other stuff i've seen of that comic--to just kinda make me think he is that guy all the time, y'know? i have trouble divorcing it from "creepy xkcd guy"

Well, maybe it's a behaviour he recognised in himself and was a piece of self-criticism, but at least that shows a level of self-awareness beyond what most creepy-nice-guys have.

He still writes terrible comics, though.

emil.y, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 20:02 (thirteen years ago)

"maybe you guys read too much xkcd"

couple friends link me to this shit alllll the time so yeah, guilty

ALMOST WENT TO JAIL/BANNED FROM CAMPUS FOR DOING DAYGAME

For the past 3 weeks I have been sarging a local university campus after school trying to get over my approach anxiety. I have done extremely well. Some days not so much, but I am seeing a great improvement in general. Used to, the very thought of approaching a hot girl would give me anxiety, but now I can talk to them like it's no big deal.

I admit it was dark when I did my last approach for the day, a 2 set walking to their dorm. I ran up to them and said, "hey you guys. Relax, this is not a robbery. I just have to tell you I saw you guys back there and I thought you were really cute and I had to come say hi." They laughed, so I introduced myself. Afterward, they started to walk away. I tried to save the set by saying, "so where are you guys going right now?" And they said back to their dorm. I ejected at that point, and told them it was nice meeting them and left. (Keep in mind I have NO GAME yet.)

About 15 minutes later I go back to my car, get in and a cop in an SUV pulls up next to me.

"I need you to step out of the car. I'm campus police."

I thought "what the hell did I do?" But complied anyway. Once I stepped out, he radioed a bunch of cops and they all surrounded me. I was scared shitless. "What did I do?" I asked. "You're creeping people out." He said. He asked me where I had been recently and I told him what I was doing. Then I proceeded to tell him the whole story-how I was trying to improve my skills with women by talking to as many as I could. Then the cop behind me chimed in and berated me. They said the girls got scared when I told them "this is not a robbery." I tried to explain it some more, I said that as halfway a joke and half way to keep them from thinking that, to no effect. That's a line I got from Sasha Daygame for God's sake. "You're a fucking weirdo." He said, "and I consider you a threat to the mental health of my campus."
