Funny, I was saying something almost exactly like that to my neighbor's dog yesterday, the one that is demonically possessed and tells me to kill people.

Again, I am someone who has some of these things, don't try to guilt me into posting it.

yes, the macro is rather dumb and uses guilt inappropriately, but I still have enough empathy with the chronically ill that all this pointing and laughing doesn't feel right to me.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 23 September 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)

lag∞n's presumed humor there still goes over my head, doc.

yup, all those words appear in what I wrote, sure enough, but equating diabetes or cancer with bee stings, stubbed toes or snow blindness as a way of laughing at the macro still seems to me like the wrong way to go about it.

Aimless, Sunday, 23 September 2012 20:45 (thirteen years ago)

Kinda wish more stubbed toes were hidden.

pplains, Sunday, 23 September 2012 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

The macro already nonsensically links a bunch of stuff together at random, using the supposed common thread of "invisibility" which actually doesn't apply to several of the things listed. I don't think anybody involved would remotely consider stubbed toes and snow blindness the equal of cancer. YMMV of course, but if the people I've known with any of these things are any indication, snarky ILX posts would be a greater comfort to the ill than stupid crap like that macro.

(I remember my mom really hating all the rah-rah, up with cancer patients/survivors stuff, and instead getting a lot of mileage out of some pretty dark humor, much darker than her previous stock in trade. I think this is a fairly common experience?)

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 23 September 2012 21:05 (thirteen years ago)

...but yeah, not everybody handles these things the same, I dunno, the humor for me was in the rhythm/on-screen "timing" more than anything else.

The Most Typical and Popular Girl Rider (Crabbits), Monday, 24 September 2012 01:38 (thirteen years ago)

FWIW, I basically see the entire archive of ILX as one long, endlessly elaborated and tangential Billy Joel thread, which sometimes loses itself so completely that you could be forgiven for not seeing in the manifest content any reference to Billy Joel. Each thread that denies its Joel-ness in the same act asserts its Joel-ness all the more strongly, and each thread that makes overt Joel references serves only to silence the Piano Man lurking in the penumbras of all other threads.

Plasmon, Monday, 24 September 2012 02:55 (thirteen years ago)

While I appreciate those who've taken a few moments from their day to explain to me why the original macro referenced in Doc Casino's excelsior post was very stupid, and why concern trolling is tatamount to genocide, I am still in the dark as to why it was so fucking hilarious to say:

guilt, empathy, pointing and laughing

As punchlines go this seems imo to lack some sort of vital, as it were, humorousness.

Lucky for me, I don't mind embarrassing myself in front of all ilx in saying that I still don't get that joke. Because the chances are good that this will cause untold dozens of ilxors to despise me as an imbecile.

(aimless blabbers his lips with his index finger)

Aimless, Monday, 24 September 2012 04:44 (thirteen years ago)

dude, it's just that there was a string of posts of a format of three things strung together, then yours, then a post that strings three words from your post together in the same format...yes?... it's absurdist dopey auto-transformation of post into template, the gag in my eyes is that kind of whatever random crap can be absorbed and spat back out in this fashion. If you're looking for an explanation of how guilt, empathy, and pointing and laughing are all being offered as ailments or something, I can't help you, cause that's not operative there, for me, although there could be some kind of meta-gag, where the persona of your typical jaundiced and cynical free-zinging ILXor sees "guilt" and "empathy" as ailments. Obviously it's hard to square "pointing and laughing" with that since that belongs to a different character than the other two. But perhaps this comes full circle and acts as a critique of the worthless category system set up by the original Facebook doohickey... which is, after all, the thing being mocked here.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 24 September 2012 04:50 (thirteen years ago)

also just fyi, concern trolling was compared to patch adams apologists, the holocaust was thrown in as something a patch adams apologist might ridiculously and not realistically cite to bolster his shaky case, at least this is how i remember it all going down

Doctor Casino, Monday, 24 September 2012 04:53 (thirteen years ago)
