sadly this is otm. my reason is specific (i.e. good luck to learners of chinese on an android handset) but millions of people probably have equally specific ios requirements.

btw apple's 'maps will improve as people use it' is wishful thinking imo.

well i bet it actually will, it just may not ever catch up with gmaps

theyll improve because apple works on them, people using them just provides useful data

isn't downgrading impossible without jailbreaking?

i spent about 2.5hrs downgrading on my 3G once and it wasnt jailbroken.

what if i restored from last week's backup?

pretty sure I read something about downgrading via dfu mode yesterday, can't find it now

you can still downgrade, but only for the next couple of days as they're expected to stop signing ios 5 pretty soon.

idk, thats a hard thing to do isnt it? Maybe they will do like the auto industry and so a big jump every like 5 years and just do incremental advancements until then.

Is there any possible way to do iOS 5 on a new iPhone 5? Because roughly 2/3 of the reason I would like to go back to smartphone land from this shitty GoPhone is to have transit maps (I am a carless New Yorker atm).

it should be automatic (when you try and send a regular text) if they've got it switched on? but i switched it off and recommend everyone do the same since a messaging system that is known to often fail to deliver messages without any error or notification is worse than useless.

iMessage has never failed on me tbf.

Happened to me once, once is enough. And how do you know, anyway! Maybe someone sent you a message that never got through that they never told you about.

Texts are close to unlimited on most iPhone plans in the UK anyway. The only thing I like about iMessage is being able to see when the other person has started typing a reply.

I really like being able to send and receive on the mac, using my phone number.

I use iMessage all the time

imessage is awesome cuz i can text friends in foreign countries w/o paying, that alone is A++++ bestest
