once in rural France my gps took me onto a dirt road alongside a river, & the road kept getting smaller & smaller until it ended in a creek

in that creek I saw an iphone floating

my geology professor grandfather - who listens to english-language radio cuba and china on shortwave for "fair and balanced" reportage - seriously thinks the british are pulling the strings behind everything in the middle east up to and including the iranian womd program, the civil war in syria, and the assassination of our ambassador in libya

my parents took their southern california ranch house a transformed it into this federalist-style thing and then filled up the inside with marble and fake ming dynasty vase lamps and paintings of famous british sea battles, armchairs upholstered with dogs hunting foxes patterns, haydn on the stereo etc

you could write a whole book about colonialism just based on home decor choices of iranian expats i think

you know how if you sell a sugar-&-water-enriched fruit juice you legally have to market it as a juice-drink, to avoid confusion & admit what it is you're selling, i feel like mayonnaise should legally have to be sold as Old Hot Eggs, w/the only room for mixing up the description being in suffixes, eg Helmann's Old Hot Eggs In A Jar

from the Fiona thread:

"Now, most of the people were very nice to me. There are four of you out there, and I want you to know that I heard everything you did. I wrote it all down with your names and everything you did and said stupidly thinking that I couldn't hear or see you. I then ripped the paper up, but not before I encoded it and-- I got two lock boxes. We'll call them "holding cell one" and "holding cell two". In "holding cell one" is the encoded version of the shit that you did that I know was inappropriate and probably illegal. In "holding cell two" is the decoder. I'm the only one who holds the key, and you and I will be intimate forever because I will hold that secret forever. Unless of course the celebrity that you had so much interest in but you wanted to accuse me of bringing up while you laughed at me all night? Unless you're interested in being a celebrity, I'll make you fucking famous any time you ask and I'll open those boxes. So why don't you stay in your fucking holding cell?"

WTF?

lag∞n's presumed humor there still goes over my head, doc.

yup, all those words appear in what I wrote, sure enough, but equating diabetes or cancer with bee stings, stubbed toes or snow blindness as a way of laughing at the macro still seems to me like the wrong way to go about it.

Aimless, Sunday, 23 September 2012 20:45 (thirteen years ago)

Kinda wish more stubbed toes were hidden.

pplains, Sunday, 23 September 2012 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

The macro already nonsensically links a bunch of stuff together at random, using the supposed common thread of "invisibility" which actually doesn't apply to several of the things listed. I don't think anybody involved would remotely consider stubbed toes and snow blindness the equal of cancer. YMMV of course, but if the people I've known with any of these things are any indication, snarky ILX posts would be a greater comfort to the ill than stupid crap like that macro.

(I remember my mom really hating all the rah-rah, up with cancer patients/survivors stuff, and instead getting a lot of mileage out of some pretty dark humor, much darker than her previous stock in trade. I think this is a fairly common experience?)

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 23 September 2012 21:05 (thirteen years ago)

...but yeah, not everybody handles these things the same, I dunno, the humor for me was in the rhythm/on-screen "timing" more than anything else.
