I like that she's not sure what she wants to do after high school quite yet. That gives me hope. I think a lot of people expect her to have a fuckin career trajectory planned out and she's just like, I want to do lots of things, and just hang out with my friends and play in bands and stuff

i read that long thing on her in the nyt a while back so even i know who she is. more importantly, i was REALLY impressed with her website. smart funny stuff on it and it looks great. and i can't say any of those things about too many websites.

xposting I guess I don't think of teenagers embarrassing themselves because teenagers are typically so awkward, anyway, that no one magnifies gaffes and whatnot, and even then, (young) teen behavior is typically forgiven. It's when you start getting older that embarrassments start to stick. Tavi is uncommonly composed, but she's also 16 and lives at home, safe and sound, in the 'burbs, with reasonable parents still involved in her life. When kids got indie and leave home, let alone with money and some degree of fame, that's when the bad stuff potentially goes down. But again, I don't expect it from her.

she has this one routine down perfect. she's successful, and smart, and creative, and more than a little precocious, and as soon as someone says "so where do you see yourself in 10 years?" she says "but i'm only ___teen, how can i know where i'll be in 10 years?" and reminds us that she is still a kid. she's canny!

Well, I've see his name in tweets, headlines, etc., but never bothered to investigate further.

She's totally canny, but also right. People forget how young she is, and, (obvs) how young she's been. It reminds me a bit of that child prodigy who got into U of C's medical school at a ridiculous age, then entered a sort of holding pattern while he essentially grew up. And now that he's graduated, he's just another doctor. A doctor that started his serious academic career in the single digits, yes, but still, just a doctor.

Obviously they know how young she is. I mean more that people see this precocious person who is well put together, well spoken, seemingly well intentioned et al. - all things we do not associate with youth - and automatically more or less amend a decade to her actual age due to her seemingly mature emotional age. Her 16 is surely not the typical 16 year old kid, and interlocutors etc. adjust.

Think about the converse: all these ridiculous post-college age actors and actresses that get humored as kids. I remember seeing Britney Spears several years ago, and she went through this precious routine where she noted she was not a girl, but not yet a woman. The first thing that popped into my head was, you know, Britney, there are people your age dying in Iraq right now. You're a woman.

How well do you guys think Jessica Hopper navigated her career from precocious zinester to whatever she is now?

Mostly I think of how she'll have more than a decade of experience under her belt by her mid-20s, in the way that my friends' daughter,who reviews plays at a very young age and gets invited to openings, etc., will.

Susan Sontag was at the U of C at age 16 (and married a year later).

She can be anything she wants. Cameron Crowe: precocious rock critic to extremely successful director to has-been, and he's only 55!

Seriously, though, even within her field, there is plenty of room for Tavi to become an editor, author, director, whatever.

She is not at all like Hopper, personally or professionally. But who knows what kind of adult Tavi will make.

I read some text about riot grrl movement recently, and it seems like the early media attention on hopper didn't ultimately do her much favors.

she's not gonna wurtzel. she's cooler and more level-headed than all that. she will totally dunst. you'll see.

When you hear her talk its v easy to forget how young she was; I assumed she was like 17 or 18 when I saw her.

And yeah you would be very hard-pressed to come up w a legit reason to hate her

Tavi seems really grounded and unspoiled; good for her. She's had extreme fash-holes paying attention to her and it hasn't seemed to turn her head.

J-Ho's mother was the features editor of the Minneapolis paper and there was open hostility towards teenaged her for the nepotism aspect of her opportunities, and for being available as a go-to person about riot grrrl when there was supposed to be a 'media blackout'. It is very easy to be hurt by scenester bitching or to find yourself stepping on toes when you do media things as a teenager. In the UK there was a post-riot grrrl rush of clever teenaged girls eg Emma Forrest/Caitlin Moran starting their writing careers when most people were sitting GCSEs; every magazine had one, they're all around 35 now and most of them are successful because they had a head start, and any fuck-ups or burn-outs on their part were probably short in duration and happened before they were really adults, or seen as such by commissioning editors.

J-Ho seems pretty level-headed these days, I think she's turned out pretty well and not sure why she's being held up as a "worrisome" ideal for Tavi.

Maybe she could have been a neurosurgeon or something? It just seems like a bad deal. Would any of you want this kind of attention visited upon you at that age, knowing how it could end up defining you?

J-Ho is just had or is about to have her second. She's much father along on the timeline of life.

Tavi's evolution is already interesting: moving from pure fashion-week fashion to a bigger cultural/social/political context. Seems to be making good choices.
