Cheap stimulation of Reddit may be making me stupid but at least it updates constantly. It's not like I'm already struggling with debilitating ADD or anything here. Help.

Evan, Thursday, 20 September 2012 23:41 (thirteen years ago)

random livejournal pictures still best for ADD relief:
www.fuzzysquid.com/LJ.php
(could be NSFW, but mostly Russian)

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 20 September 2012 23:43 (thirteen years ago)

Thanks!

Also are you saying I should just tell my boss "its OK, only Russian"

Evan, Thursday, 20 September 2012 23:48 (thirteen years ago)

it's a crapshoot but i feel like 10% of traffic is NSFW, 70% is Russian. maybe some of which is both Russian and NSFW.
livejournal is weirdly popular in Russia.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 20 September 2012 23:53 (thirteen years ago)

Russia is a frightening place to me but makes for fascinating content if nothing else.

Evan, Friday, 21 September 2012 00:01 (thirteen years ago)

LJ is owned by a Russian company now, too.

hey reddit users let's play a game : come up with an idea for a popular subboard by clicking on the "Create your own community" button and the subboard that got the most "readers" , let's say, a month from now is the big winner. you can use this opportunity to come up with something useful or to prove a point about the dumbness of reddit users etc

"...for your hobby.
...because you love freedom."

Sébastien, Sunday, 23 September 2012 17:21 (thirteen years ago)

if you can't find the button after you have registered here's a direct link http://www.reddit.com/reddits/create

my first entry: http://www.reddit.com/r/Fauxllywood/
"for your spoofs of hollywood marketing magic"

it's not a revolutionary idea but who knows maybe it will have some pop legs.

Sébastien, Sunday, 23 September 2012 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

There are a couple subreddits for very specialized tech/science stuff which there's basically no substitute for at the moment. I'd be happy if they migrated to a less overall screwed up environment, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. Some of the other speciality subreddits aren't bad for skimming either. At this point tho, I think the problems with reddit are almost "the problems with lots and lots of young people whose jobs give them time to waste on the internet."

s.clover, Sunday, 23 September 2012 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

I hate reddit cause I hate the vote-up-vote-down/collapse-expand nested post format. That design (along with other things) also makes Daily Kos unreadable.

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Sunday, 23 September 2012 22:52 (thirteen years ago)

Also its full of the same tech-worshiping lolbertarians that used to be on Digg.

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Sunday, 23 September 2012 23:19 (thirteen years ago)

Ubiquitous up/downvotes help cut down on "me too" noise. For the subreddits I'm on the nested format works pretty well. Discussions also only rarely go past ~40 posts. (And tend to hover around 10 usually). When they do go past about 50, things become pretty unmanageable. At a certain scale, you're not having one discussion any more, but just sort of wandering a cocktail party and eavesdropping on lots of completely unrelated conversations.

s.clover, Sunday, 23 September 2012 23:47 (thirteen years ago)

fuck reddit. I just want to post these awesome foxes I found on that Russian site

Reddit Users Attempt to Shame Sikh Woman, Get Righteously Schooled

JuliaA, Thursday, 27 September 2012 03:53 (thirteen years ago)

i found that story kinda strange to consider - in that i think it's really profound & so my reflex 'ha OWNED reddit' response feels p insufficient - but it does sorta illuminate the different plains of existence you can occupy, as a computer user chuckling in the basement or as someone religious & content

let's get the banned back together (schlump), Thursday, 27 September 2012 03:57 (thirteen years ago)

sorta

planes too

mookieproof, Thursday, 27 September 2012 04:21 (thirteen years ago)

that sikh story is heartwarming right up until the part where the o/p turns around and starts being like "this isnt what reddit is about" when its like uhhhhh pointing and laughing at women and religious ppl? p sure this is exactly waht reddit is abt

die face down in some dude's pool (how's life), Thursday, 27 September 2012 11:24 (thirteen years ago)

OP's conversion on the "Sikh woman" story seems somewhat unconvincing to me

like in my mind someone who posts that pic (i.e. sees someone they think is ugly and/or ambiguously gendered in public, thinks "this is hilarious!", takes a clear and recognisable photo, and posts it to the internet for bros to lol at and upvote the poster's genius for capturing the hilarity of) is not someone who suddenly has a sincere and lasting epiphany about the equal personhood/rights/feelings of people even if they look funny and possibly even if they don't post eloquent and politely educational responses on the internet

but maybe I am kidding myself if I don't think everyone who grew up in the cameraphone era is in the "funny-looking strangers are totes cool to upload photos of to the internet for lulz" camp by default, even those decent enough to change their mind if called on it

still small voice of clam (a passing spacecadet), Thursday, 27 September 2012 11:45 (thirteen years ago)

Well his apology seems more like "sorry for bringing the quality of reddir down" than for what he actually did wrong

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Thursday, 27 September 2012 12:29 (thirteen years ago)

I looked at it. Seems to be the kind of LCD thing that becomes addictive to some people. Internet obsession is very old for me - like I had it a zillion years ago, in college, when I was semi-addicted to e-mail.
