def p famous, her instagram is constantly spammed by teenage girls begging for shoutouts, its bizarre

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Thursday, 20 September 2012 23:14 (thirteen years ago)

she should send them chewed-up postcards

gesange der yuengling (crüt), Thursday, 20 September 2012 23:20 (thirteen years ago)

booooooo.

Considering how famous she is in her early teens, to other teens, I think she's likely to be present in public consciousness for my entire lifetime. If she doesn't make a move into a seriously entrepreneurial endeavour (I hope she doesn't) then she's probably already seen the height of her fame and that's just OK, I love her writing and she's totally awesome

a whiter shade of paleo (Ówen P.), Thursday, 20 September 2012 23:27 (thirteen years ago)

the recent malcolm in the middle reunion got me wondering if the kid celebrity burnout syndrome is bad enough that there's a culpability in even spectatorship, or if it's just a thing where only the worst cases make the spotlight and it's no worse than just normal kids who are good at something.

i was into when she was on i love style, kind over it now

Jessica Hopper ‏@jesshopp
Keep thinking about how the 2 of biggest influences on teenz-culture right now are local: Chief Keef and Tavi.

U FORGOT SKRILLEX

lag∞n, Friday, 21 September 2012 03:16 (thirteen years ago)

Ok now I gotta figure out wtf this chief keef character is. Been seeing his name nonstop for last 2 weeks. Some kind of rapper I guess.

Sandy Denny Real Estate (jaymc), Friday, 21 September 2012 03:26 (thirteen years ago)

he is a teen who raps abt guns

lag∞n, Friday, 21 September 2012 03:29 (thirteen years ago)

Ok he has a single that hit #100? Gtfo with that influential stuff. I know, i know, real measure of teenz culture isn't billboard but the weird wild Internet.

Sandy Denny Real Estate (jaymc), Friday, 21 September 2012 03:29 (thirteen years ago)

easily one of the fifty thousand most influential people w/teens

lag∞n, Friday, 21 September 2012 03:29 (thirteen years ago)

how hard it is for a 13 year old to really embarrass themselve

this is crazy i think! teenage embarrassment is way more linked to how embarrassing teenagers inherently are than just some goofy/drunken stuff they do. that she's so level headed & sage & smart, even out of a teenage context/standard - so ie she's a good interviewer, writer, &c - reps v well for her.

I love her writing and she's totally awesome

I like that she's not sure what she wants to do after high school quite yet. That gives me hope. I think a lot of people expect her to have a fuckin career trajectory planned out and she's just like, I want to do lots of things, and just hang out with my friends and play in bands and stuff

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Friday, 21 September 2012 05:28 (thirteen years ago)

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 24 September 2012 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

i read that long thing on her in the nyt a while back so even i know who she is. more importantly, i was REALLY impressed with her website. smart funny stuff on it and it looks great. and i can't say any of those things about too many websites.

scott seward, Monday, 24 September 2012 16:06 (thirteen years ago)

xposting I guess I don't think of teenagers embarrassing themselves because teenagers are typically so awkward, anyway, that no one magnifies gaffes and whatnot, and even then, (young) teen behavior is typically forgiven. It's when you start getting older that embarrassments start to stick. Tavi is uncommonly composed, but she's also 16 and lives at home, safe and sound, in the 'burbs, with reasonable parents still involved in her life. When kids got indie and leave home, let alone with money and some degree of fame, that's when the bad stuff potentially goes down. But again, I don't expect it from her.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 September 2012 16:09 (thirteen years ago)

she has this one routine down perfect. she's successful, and smart, and creative, and more than a little precocious, and as soon as someone says "so where do you see yourself in 10 years?" she says "but i'm only ___teen, how can i know where i'll be in 10 years?" and reminds us that she is still a kid. she's canny!

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 24 September 2012 16:17 (thirteen years ago)

jaymc doesn't know who keef is?!!?

what?!

Well, I've see his name in tweets, headlines, etc., but never bothered to investigate further.

Sandy Denny Real Estate (jaymc), Monday, 24 September 2012 16:17 (thirteen years ago)

She's totally canny, but also right. People forget how young she is, and, (obvs) how young she's been. It reminds me a bit of that child prodigy who got into U of C's medical school at a ridiculous age, then entered a sort of holding pattern while he essentially grew up. And now that he's graduated, he's just another doctor. A doctor that started his serious academic career in the single digits, yes, but still, just a doctor.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 September 2012 16:30 (thirteen years ago)

People forget how young she is

uh

lag∞n, Monday, 24 September 2012 17:24 (thirteen years ago)

Obviously they know how young she is. I mean more that people see this precocious person who is well put together, well spoken, seemingly well intentioned et al. - all things we do not associate with youth - and automatically more or less amend a decade to her actual age due to her seemingly mature emotional age. Her 16 is surely not the typical 16 year old kid, and interlocutors etc. adjust.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 September 2012 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

Think about the converse: all these ridiculous post-college age actors and actresses that get humored as kids. I remember seeing Britney Spears several years ago, and she went through this precious routine where she noted she was not a girl, but not yet a woman. The first thing that popped into my head was, you know, Britney, there are people your age dying in Iraq right now. You're a woman.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 September 2012 17:32 (thirteen years ago)

How well do you guys think Jessica Hopper navigated her career from precocious zinester to whatever she is now?

Philip Nunez, Monday, 24 September 2012 17:35 (thirteen years ago)

Mostly I think of how she'll have more than a decade of experience under her belt by her mid-20s, in the way that my friends' daughter, who reviews plays at a very young age and gets invited to openings, etc., will.

Susan Sontag was at the U of C at age 16 (and married a year later).

canonical casual cordouroy (Eazy), Monday, 24 September 2012 18:02 (thirteen years ago)

most prodigies never become super triumphant adults, this prob says more abt how rare it is to be highly successful than anything abt prodigies

lag∞n, Monday, 24 September 2012 18:04 (thirteen years ago)

although i knew this guy who was a childhood cello prodigy and oh man

lag∞n, Monday, 24 September 2012 18:05 (thirteen years ago)

is tavi a prodigy in that sense though? she really does seem more in the jessica hopper mold, which is... worrisome.

Philip Nunez, Monday, 24 September 2012 18:07 (thirteen years ago)

when you are a child prodigy blogger what kind of super triumph adult can you become? don't you just turn into an older blogger

iatee, Monday, 24 September 2012 18:08 (thirteen years ago)

ppl love this young woman so much i want to hate her but afaict theres not actually a good reason to do so

lag∞n, Monday, 24 September 2012 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

who knows what the publishing world will be in a decade, or even if 'blogger' will mean anything other than 'author,' tho tbh i can see tavi becoming the millennial edition of a diana vreeland or a grace coddington

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 24 September 2012 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

She can be anything she wants. Cameron Crowe: precocious rock critic to extremely successful director to has-been, and he's only 55!

Seriously, though, even within her field, there is plenty of room for Tavi to become an editor, author, director, whatever.

She is not at all like Hopper, personally or professionally. But who knows what kind of adult Tavi will make.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 24 September 2012 18:14 (thirteen years ago)

idk what tavi is rly like bit i wkiw her, she seems super chill

Why "worrisome"?

Sandy Denny Real Estate (jaymc), Monday, 24 September 2012 18:18 (thirteen years ago)

real worried abt tavi u guys

lag∞n, Monday, 24 September 2012 18:18 (thirteen years ago)

I read some text about riot grrl movement recently, and it seems like the early media attention on hopper didn't ultimately do her much favors.

Philip Nunez, Monday, 24 September 2012 18:24 (thirteen years ago)

WTF is this? also anyone who has had a "fan" knows it feels a lot like having a stalker who claims to be benevolent. maybe i don't get it, but this reads as "strongly unhinged" to me. is that the point?

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Friday, 14 June 2024 14:53 (two years ago)

reads like modern era nyc-based vibes-based not-quite-autofiction. not really my thing but I feel like it's meant to wind up the audience a bit in the purpose of conveying anxiety

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Friday, 14 June 2024 14:55 (two years ago)

xp - "fan" in scare quotes on purpose -- i obviously don't think all fans of things are quasi-stalkers. to be the fan of a person/admire a person and their output and try to be their friend/know them intimately are not the same thing.

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Friday, 14 June 2024 14:57 (two years ago)

i haven't read the tavi zine but this writer is clearly trying to go viral

this kind of gave me flashbacks to the NY scenester autofiction type stuff the pitchfork reviews reviews guy used to write. And that guy ended up becoming Tavi's boyfriend.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Friday, 14 June 2024 15:32 (two years ago)

Just remembered Tavi dated Ezra from vampire weekend too, when she was 18 and he was 30 iirc. Also iirc there were some whispers several years ago about him not being a particularly great dude to her, but I don't know if there was truth behind that. She wrote an article about it but didn't name him, but seems like it might have been him.

omar little, Friday, 14 June 2024 15:33 (two years ago)

I guess if this is what writers these days have to offer, I'm ok with media jobs just no longer existing.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Friday, 14 June 2024 15:39 (two years ago)

I had no idea about her dating PRR *or* Koenig! Makes sense I guess

jaymc, Friday, 14 June 2024 15:48 (two years ago)

The author reads like a real life Wendy (the Walter Scott comic, not Peter Pan). I don't think the author's anxieties are unusual, and it's interesting to read them laid bare, but this is a profoundly intrusive piece-of-shit bit of writing

frociaggine e figaggine (flamboyant goon tie included), Friday, 14 June 2024 16:42 (two years ago)

tavi noted the author's brilliance and referred to it as fan fiction in her ig story so motwyw
