I found one feature I really love: reading list syncs while safari isn't running. I bookmark pages on my mac and the full page is on my phone when I get on the tube

stet, Thursday, 20 September 2012 21:31 (thirteen years ago)

after 24 hrs of use i have yet to find a new feature or change that is not obnoxious

Today's Times:

Eamon Yates, 26, and his friend Ben Paton, 25, both employed in the IT industry, and third and fourth in the queue, began camping in the Covent Garden Piazza on Wednesday and had booked time off work to do so.

Mr Paton said: “We both work for the same company and we’ve both taken three days off for this, and I think that’s one of the things that a lot of people don’t realise.

“They think you must be on benefits or a bum, but no, no, I’ve taken time off, I’ve made the effort, I want to do this, this is what I want to do with my time.”

Fucking hell.

sktsh, Friday, 21 September 2012 07:45 (thirteen years ago)

Played with new maps on ipad last night. The tiles are horrible, all roads the same colour and spidery thin. The data is appalling, places that closed or changed hands five years ago, a petrol station where there is a convenience store, a bar where there is a dance studio, all within 1/4 mile of my home. But 3d maps is pretty awesome. Slow, and glitchy for non-cuboid buildings, but still a way cool way of seeing yr city (if you happen to live in one that's been 3d mapped).

ledge, Friday, 21 September 2012 08:09 (thirteen years ago)

although it is basically a gimmick.

there I was thinking the mapocalypse was merely a series of glitches and at worst an inferior solution that would improve over time. now that it has actively fucked over this evening AND my plans for tomorrow morning, I can now see that this is very genuinely the biggest software clusterfuck of the 21st century.

* The "no hands" rule can be compared to socialist tax policies (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 21 September 2012 09:33 (thirteen years ago)

we went to inspect a flat that mapocalypse listed in two separate locations, neither of which is correct. we can't even use street view to work out where it is. two days ago that would have been fine.

recently I've been recommending the galaxy s iii to people, and now my recommendation will only widen to everyone who isn't learning chinese and doesn't have accessibility requirements.

are you aware of http://maps.google.com/ ?

caek, Friday, 21 September 2012 09:48 (thirteen years ago)

also the biggest software clusterfucks of the 21st century were all in high frequency trading

caek, Friday, 21 September 2012 09:50 (thirteen years ago)

shhh my second favorite part of apple threads is autumn almanac doing this

- no street view
- no longer integrated into existing apps

i have maps.goo.etc.etc in chrome, that's fine, that does the job 82% of the time, but as soon as i open say a real estate app and look for a flat that's in the fucking ocean it all falls apart

does lex have an iphone?

caek, Friday, 21 September 2012 11:38 (thirteen years ago)

My 5 just got delivered. Activation took less than 5 minutes (on O2). Can't work out how to open the little box with the earpods in it.

JimD, Friday, 21 September 2012 12:01 (thirteen years ago)

Half the time I use the Google Maps app for visual directions, which aren't offered in the mobile browser version, so that's not a solution for me.

Alba, Friday, 21 September 2012 12:29 (thirteen years ago)

Anyway, I'm pretty hopeful we'll get a standalone Google Maps iOS app soon, and then we'll have world peace.

Alba, Friday, 21 September 2012 12:30 (thirteen years ago)

mostly. apps will still be using apple's maps by default, unless they go out of their way (my prediction is that many will go out of their way).

* The "no hands" rule can be compared to socialist tax policies (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 21 September 2012 12:56 (thirteen years ago)

Not that bothered by the thought of losing integration. I usually use it as a standalone app.

Alba, Friday, 21 September 2012 13:15 (thirteen years ago)

I use it mostly from the calendar app.

Android's ability to connect apps is much better than Apple's, sadly. If they used the same system this wouldn't be an issue

stet, Friday, 21 September 2012 13:16 (thirteen years ago)

AA's maps complaints may sound like #firstworldproblems, but apple is going to pay some price for underestimating its importance. I have to decide which mobile devices are going to be part of a corporate standard this year, and I can't send field sales reps out into the world with a half-assed map solution. that's a deal breaker.

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Friday, 21 September 2012 13:49 (thirteen years ago)

can you send them out with sherpas

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Friday, 21 September 2012 13:51 (thirteen years ago)

iSherpa

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Friday, 21 September 2012 13:51 (thirteen years ago)

after the article on climbing Everest I read this week, sherpas may be a good comparison for apple maps

still, excited about getting my first real iphone today (out for delivery!)

("real" meaning actually has data plan turned on)

Euler, Friday, 21 September 2012 13:54 (thirteen years ago)

it's unfortunate cuz I'm not a big android fan, blackberrys are going the way of the whale, and I can't wait to see the tumbleweeds rolling through the aisles of the windows phone app store. had high hopes for iphone 5.

yeah this whole Maps business has not only convinced me not to update my iphone 4 but comforted me in my reluctant conclusion that I might as well wait for iPhone 5S or 6 to upgrade

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 21 September 2012 14:02 (thirteen years ago)

"but apple is going to pay some price for underestimating its importance."

this is a big assumption, but anyone who reviewed ios6 and didn't mention how useless maps was should be ashamed of themselves and should feel bad.
