I've been sneaking back onto ILM more and more, esp. as I've now got constant access. I've noticed it has gotten a bit less elitist these days, which is cool

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

when it first started we all had better sex. not necessarily longer but noisier.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I see you've been trying to rekindle the fire lately

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 30 July 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I am NOT impotent.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 30 July 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

duly noted

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 30 July 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and I guess the obvious thing to note is that the board demoraphic has come to reflect the internet at large much more closely (ie. dominated by Americans) which has changed things in whatever way you might like to argue.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

posts shorter/even less consensus on pop music/perhaps a more pronounced USA emphasis (as opposed to transcontinental)?

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 30 July 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

as opposed to TOTALLY GAY 80'S REVIVALIST CRAP

Whiskeytown Littlecock (ex machina), Friday, 30 July 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

jon you are really wearying.

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 30 July 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO YOU ARE

Whiskeytown Littlecock (ex machina), Friday, 30 July 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

jon what are you really wearing

Sir Chaki McBeer III (chaki), Friday, 30 July 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'M NOT WEARING PANTS

Whiskeytown Littlecock (ex machina), Friday, 30 July 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

It's threads like this that make me completely feel like ILX has been taken over by Americans with ways of talking and frames of reference that completely leave me out in the cold. I'd be better off understanding it if it was in French. This is neither supposed to imply a generalized anti-Americanism on my part, nor to suggest that ILX is all like that these days.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

And as I said, I generally prefer ILM to ILE these days, partly because I'm just very into music at the moment. The subjects of threads on ILE do tend to get very Americocentric after about 6pm GMT, and though there's nothing wrong with this, I often just don't have any real knowledge of the subjects, so it's not much fun for me.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

you like fun too much.

cºzen (Cozen), Friday, 30 July 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I kind of drop in and out of ILE, and I guess come to think about it have met alot of the posters I know and hence contact them offboard more.

I still like a good ILE thread, I've lost track but do threads still really kick off and get great occasionally at about 22.00 UK time, with loads of posts and jokes and things??

There was a great period of that for a while.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 30 July 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba, to be honest, I don't understand that one ILM thread either, and I'm as American as truckasauruses.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 July 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I meant certain Americans. I mentioned the nationality because I don't think that there are any British people who would be able to engage with it.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

whoa, you linked to a post I made about Chuck's specious Black Dice/Soft Machine comparison - and Soft Machine is about the most stereotypically English music I can imagine!

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 30 July 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think anyone is actually able to engage with that thread, which is why it turned out like it did.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 30 July 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

SUMAC!
I thank all of you for essentially providing me a good explanation and synopsis of ILX. I have read the FAQ; and I studied up on the source and initiation of I Love Music and I Love Everything. What the FAQ did not mention are the more informal and locational aspects of the boards, which would certainly help me understand, in more detail, the waves of emigrants and immigrants -- the why and the when.

Bum Lik-King Fargit (bumlikkingfargit), Friday, 30 July 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

discourse was a lot more thoughtful and earnest (sometimes painfully so) in the old days

Bum Lik-King Fargit (bumlikkingfargit), Friday, 30 July 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

IMGOD!
I had trouble using the "IMG" tag, even though the FAQ mentioned this was a way to post images. I suppose I can view the HTML source and see if I accidentally misspelled my tag twice, but I somehow doubt it.

Bum Lik-King Fargit (bumlikkingfargit), Friday, 30 July 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

the IMG SRC code has been disabled.

A PROMISE OF A LAST MESSAGE ON THIS TOPIC.. AND OF A NEW DAY, TOO, JANET
Thank you, H. Stencil! The FAQ doesn't reflect this new revelation, apparently. Apologies for all the attempts.

Bum Lik-King Fargit (bumlikkingfargit), Friday, 30 July 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil - yours were some of the few posts on that thread I could follow. I meant to link to the whole thing, not a post of yours - I don't know how that happened.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

This looks like it could be from today. All it's missing is 100 Post Pictures of Hot Underage Girls' Tits threads or whatever. http://ilx.wh3rd.net/archive.php?board=1&date=22%2F08%2F01

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 30 July 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Bunzzzzz O)))))))))))))))))) (ex machina), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

You really think that looks the same? I can get a handle on most of the thread titles there.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

ILX lately = lots of perving over this or that actress. it's really lame.

daria g (daria g), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

It doesn't look exactly the same, and it kind of looks like Gareth titled every thread. But any of those threads would be at home on the new answers page at this very mo'. It's also good proof that there was always dumb crap on ILE, too.

xpost true, getting old

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know how many people are posting regularly now or did post regularly 3 years ago, and I can't tell what the tone or style of conversation is now and neither could I tell 3 years ago.

But before I ever posted here like 4 years ago every post was like an essay, right?

And if your not from Flint then it's like straight up fuck you
The city that I'm from is just a dot on the map
Where dope houses get robbed and most of the clubs ????? (dem shouts)
Michael Jackson said it don't matter black or white but it should
Cause Flint Michigan's a long way from Hollywood
I tried to go to college but I saw myself stuck in Flint
Beside them college folks don't want no po male black resident
Flint Michigan's a prison and we all are locked up
The only good jobs are the jobs that could be rocked up
Refused to work for Burger King and still be livin po
How can you work for Burger King an live in a condo
My city's being fuck by your system, that's evident
Puts bullets in a brother at a club back to ignorent

Where the fuck are they from ffffff Flint town
Where the fuck are you from ffffff Flint town
Where the fuck are they from ffffff Flint town
Flint is dominated
But never immatated
The others perpatrated
But still we regulated
The Dayton Family is a nation
To build a new creation
To take a vacation that is an occupation
Flint ho's is steady sackin

But niggas wearin dickies, but some are bein picky
They see me in my packas and these bitches wanna lick me
Groove to the sounds of the TDF
Takin ova like rova till there's no time left
On stage in a rage
We might get payed
We can tell you where we're from but not our age
From the F to the L to the I-N-T
To the D-A-Y-T-O-N A-V-E
So just shake your body and don't you quit
Other cities say they're number one, but that's hoeshit
(chorus)
Where the fuck are you from ffffff Flint town

Where the fuck are you from ffffff Flint town
Where the fuck are they from ffffff Flint town

Is Lindsay Lohan an actress? Would I know who she was if I watched MTV?

xxpost

Yeah, when you gotta pick between the legend and reality, go with the legend.

um, xpost

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

the only differences i've seen in my 16 months or so of periodic reading have mainly to do with the posters who have departed rather than an overall change. the "corny 80's fuq" thread on ilm today, for instance, i think might have been somewhat more thoughtful and less dismissive of others had t0m ew1ng or j0hn darni3113 or other dear departeds been around.

not that i read that many boards or anything, but i *very* much appreciate the non-american character of ilx. sometimes i wish i knew the limey/aussie/nz references better, but it's still grebt. and i think that the yanks here (i am one, obv) are for the most part pretty cosmopolitan/aware of the world outside america. at least by yank standards. sorry if there are too many of us.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Please don't apologise! The weight of it is just one of those inevitable things.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I keep feeling like I'm coming across as very pompous and anti-American, despite my intentions. There's loads of stuff I learn from Americans on here that I'm very grateful for.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I am constantly amazed at how clued in Merkans and Brits can be these days to each other's pop culture. When I was a kid, it was much harder.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 30 July 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

oh no. i wasn't meaning that at all!

xp

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 30 July 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm probably just a little defensive because ugly americanism really bothers me, no matter if it's W, or tourists, or jon on a board (i know, i know, he's being ironic, whatever). and our current political direction makes my discomfort even worse.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 30 July 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I could follow that discussion that alba linked to but I dunno, I think ilm has developed so that many genres now have their specialists; now you have threads for dancehall, grime, metal. So not really americanisation but maybe the board are less pop in character than before (=> which kinda follows something an ilxer told me).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 30 July 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It's threads like this that make me completely feel like ILX has been taken over by Americans with ways of talking and frames of reference that completely leave me out in the cold.

I'm American and I don't get it either.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Friday, 30 July 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I posted that before reading most of the thread and now see it was kind of pointless to say again.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Without having clicked on most of these threads, here's a rundown of the way I see the latest crop of New Answers. This isn't supposed to be a 'you bastards - ILE has gone to shit, it used to be so great' rant. It's just to show how things are from one longtime poster's perspective, to illustrate what I was trying to say above.

Punching women in the face. (53 new answers, 53+ unread)

Fine - potentially interesting. Clearly worded.

O Boy! It's the Democratic National Convention! (627 new answers, 627+ unread)

Of some interest to me, though the number of posts suggests a level of detail that's perhaps offputting.

This is a thread for listing every word in English (368 new answers, 83 unread)

Err- whatever.

Longtime ILXors - how has this board changed over time? (78 new answers)

Meta-shit. Invevitable, I suppose, and can't remember there being one quite on this subject without it being aggressively started, so OK.

Weird Animals (15 new answers)

Filler. OK.

warning warning DO NOT SEE 'THE VILLAGE' IT IS A PIECE OF SHIT warning warning (182 new answers, 182+ unread)

Don't know what the Village is. Don't like the way the title is worded or capitalized.

ANAL OGIES (9 new answers, 9+ unread)

For God's sake.

"I'd rather not talk about that because it's something negative" (18 new answers)

Interesting topic. Great thread.

Big Brother (UK 2004) - Chain of fools: thread 8 (102 new answers)

Great for me and other UK BB fans. Good talk, though if you're not from the UK very dull, I imagine, though Dan seems to love it. So, selfishly, great.

HPENCIL (4 new answers, 4+ unread)

Waste of time. Presume it refers to hstencil in some way. Don't like threads about people.

This Is the Thread Where I Say part 17: Intelligence Is The Best Revenge (352 new answers, 352+ unread)

Just not for me. I've got no interest in ILE being a general 'how you doing?' chat board, but it's not like this subculture takes over, so I can't really complain.

whaddaya look like now then? (42 new answers, 42 unread)

I don't like the word 'whaddaya', but this succession of photo threads is OK, I suppose. I occasionally have a look to see what people look like, though once I've seen them once I don't really want to see more pictures (unless they are v.hott, obv.).

Assholes in South Africa shooting wildlife (50 new answers, 50+ unread)

A Calum thread, I believe. I dunno - for various reasons, his animal rights threads never end up being very interesting, and its not all his fault.

The Thinking Man's Sex Kitten (123 new answers, 2 unread)

Just a kind of list and photo thread, I think, which doesn't really float my boat. Seeed to be about lots of Americans I'd never heard of for a while, then broadened out a bit. Questioning the assumptions behind the concept of the thinking man's crumpet might be interesting, I guess.

you happy now? you are? why's that? (22 new answers, 22+ unread)

Pass.

digital camera advice, please (9 new answers)

I don't know much about cameras but it's a useful thread to enough people and maybe me if I ever buy another one.

What are you listening to in the NU-ILX ERA????? (78 new answers, 78 unread)

Never really saw the appeal of these threads. If people say something inspiring about something I haven't heard then maybe, but they just tend to be lists, I think. Maybe I'm wrong - hardly ever click on them.

Fruit - C or D? (15 new answers)

Ah, good old fruit.

Bush: "Maybe Iran had a hand in 9/11 instead...." (4 new answers, 4 unread)

I'm all 9/11'ed out, but I appreciate these threads being there.

Ilxor Impressions (be nice!) (199 new answers, 11 unread)

NOOO!!!

this is the thread where we talk breathlessly about the best TV show on North American television: THE AMAZING RACE! (8 new answers, 8 unread)

I like that it makes it clear it's North American. I'm not fond of the cutesy 'this is the thread where we' thing, but I and others have said that before.

Can you ride a bike? (73 new answers, 73+ unread)

I don't really care whether people can ride a bike or not, but I suppose something interesting might just come out of it.

NU-EXCELSIOR (184 new answers)

My worst ILX vice. I find 90% of what's on there unfunny, mainly because it's out of context (even when several posts are pasted), and because it's labelled 'this is funny'. But I can't stop clicking on it to see if someone has put something of mine on there, and then I hate myself. Also, I really don't like the whole 'EXCELSIOR' thing but I guess it's hear to stay. My attitude to it softened a bit when I learned that it was a reference to comic book speak. I thought it was just a 'hey! crazy old-fashioned word!' thing.

Ebay: Cash Cow or Evil Bitch? (6 new answers)

I generally don't like too many 'bitches' etc. in titles, but otherwise yeah - this thread's OK.

This is the thread where we all post as the young stars of Hollywood (44 new answers, 44+ unread)

Again with the 'this is the thread where we'. I'm rarely that impressed with these 'do a pastiche' threads, everyone trying hard to be clever with their turns.

Trig Brother 2004 Saturday 31 July (83 new answers, 83 unread)

Social event organizing. You have to be there.

jaymc is in a band! (28 new answers, 28 unread)

Goodo!

What do you hate? (123 new answers, 123 unread)

Bit too general a question to provoke interesting responses, I think. Also, generally in life I've had enough of people getting angry and annoyed with trivial things. Room 101 was always crap ha ha (British TV show - sorry!)

Famous crime scenes (39 new answers, 39+ unread)

Hmm... don't think I'd click on it, but if you're into crime, yeah.

Lindsay Lohan: "Hot, Ready, and Legal!" (359 new answers, 15 unread)

I don't know why I read that the other night and chipped in with my boring observations. Hollywood starlets coming of age. Err yeah - whatever. Lots of C on Ts.

Predict Trends Of 2005 (98 new answers, 4 unread)

A folorn request, I think. If you could do this for real, you'd make a lot of money. So mainly just lots of one-line joke responses, including me recycling one I made on ILE in predictions for 2002 or something, as a vague joke to myself.

General movie anticipation thread (82 new answers, 82+ unread)

I'm prefer a bit of focus.

Social Network Sites Showcasing the Mentalists of our Age (3 new answers, 1 unread)

Some shit.

Sysadmin Follies (2 new answers, 2 unread)

Some IT worker thing.

favorite sexual position???????? (9 new answers)

There are already loads of threads about this. They wouldn't have been hard to find.

West Indies Vs England 2004 (1 new answer, 1 unread)

For cricket fans.

I'm all about freeze-dried bananas right now (23 new answers)

Filler, but good humoured, witty filler.

thee "L0BSTER L|BERATI0N FR0NT" wtf?? (15 new answers, 15+ unread)

wtf indeed. Too much wtf. And funny letters.

Do You Know What I Mean? (40 new answers, 2 unread)

A bit of scraping the barrel from an otherwise thoughtful question setter.

OBIT: It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Jackson Beck! (1 new answer, 1+ unread)

Don't know who that is, but some effort in the thread titling. RIP, I guess?

Who on this bitch is from THE SUBURBS¿ (92 new answers, 6 unread)

More 'bitch'. There have been a lot of threads about suburbia. I think I prefer questions that go beyond 'lets share experiences of x'.

What star sign are you... (190 new answers, 190 unread)

For astrologists. There are a lot of astrology threads. I like the ones where people argue about it with Vic, a bit. Maybe this is one of them.

THREAD CONNECTIONS and a mule

Was 'Thread Connections' ever funny? And I do hate the whole thing of coming up with new twists on old title names that are then impenetrable to anyone coming to ILX for the first time.

What Video Games Are You Wasting Your Life Away on Now? (Vol 2.) (42 new answers, 42 unread)

I don't know why I lost interest in my Playstation.

OLYMPICS 2004 (19 new answers, 19+ unread)

As ever, I'll get into it once it starts.

Edinburgh Military Tattoo - classic or dud? (10 new answers, 4 unread)

Yeah, why not?

Berlin (8 new answers, 8 unread)

Ah, Berlin. Threads about foreign places are often quite good.

Katrina Vanden Heuvel = ROWR (28 new answers, 28+ unread)

Don't know her, but I'll take your word for it!

Club Freaky Trigger THURSDAY 29th July (134 new answers, 134 unread)

More London indie club hijinx. Next.

"HI KIDS WE'RE HOME EARLY" (27 new answers, 27+ unread)

Is this about times you've been rumbled by your parents? Actually, I don't care.

MANPRIs (21 new answers, 21+ unread)

What?

MODERATOR ANNOUNCEMENT: ILE to accept posts from registered users only (465 new answers, 1 unread)

More meta-shit. Essential meta-shit, sadly. There was fighting on it, yes?

"Manhunt" withdrawn from Dixons stores (110 new answers)

A good going over of an old but new topic.

DON'T THINK: What's making you laugh the most these days. (54 new answers, 54+ unread)

death and how to live through it (10 new answers, 10 unread)

Don't like this title much. Somehow, even a capital D would have helped. I've looked at it now and I see people have put a lot of time into their posts. Good stuff, though not for me, just now. Actually, I've never really seen ILE has a place to talk about stuff like that, but that's just me.

'State of ILX' threads really are like a slow walking tour of the alimentary canal. They may meander and vary in pace but you can bet your bottom dollar that they'll all reach the same inevitable destination in time.

We had some version of this debate on a climate channel on a private Discord server I belong to...

and I essentially posted, "It isn't my job as a queer dude married to a non-white dude to engage with people who want to kill the two of us." That's fine if people want to do that, but I simply don't have the patience, and I don't think people should be expected to have that patience.

one thing that i find is that the longer this board goes on, the more wood i've chopped out back. i know we probably already have enough wood for the winter, but i like to go back there, drink a milkshake and blow off some steam sometimes

That reminds me, I need to use my friend's chainsaw to shorten some logs. Which seems like a euphemism, but I have no idea what it would be for.

According to this (caveat etc.) the highest liquid milk consumption in the world is Belarus, followed by New Zealand:

In terms of total dairy usage, it looks like India absolutely trounces everyone, with Ireland right behind.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 10 December 2021 18:56 (four years ago)

that's interesting! my friend was telling me how all of his american-born relatives are taller than his indian-born ones and i hypothesized that they consumed more dairy here (note, i have not looked into whether dairy/height correlation is even true)

This is going kinda back in my memory but I remember learning that height is strongly correlated to pre-natal health and resources available to mothers?
