ten months pass...
I don't have any money, but I would nevertheless like to decide which car to pin my affections on, for future reference.

It must be cute. Small. The color should be perhaps be red. With a cream interior? Leather?

So . . .

http://www.jkoons3.com/graphics/Jetta-2.jpg

or

http://aerorentacar.com/images/bug.jpg

?

Other options, Mini Cooper, Toyota Corrolla (not the same cuteness factor, but drove as a rental car and liked it).

One problem is that I'm not that fond of the "new" Jetta.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The "new" Jetta is terrible. It looks too much like a bland Toyota.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I drove a Toyota Matrix (corolla +1) today and liked it all right. I wouldn't get another volkswagen, personally.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Mary: Get a Zipcar membership, you can try out all of them! There's no monthly charge, just the application fee and then you pay as you go.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I have driven the Prius, the Scion xA, and the Matrix so far. I think the Scion wins out of that bunch though the Matrix appeared to have better acceleration. The Prius does get lovely mileage but fuck that dashboard layout, thoroughly annoying. And FWIW I've also driven a Jetta and owned a Beetle and the Jetta kicks the Beetle out of the stadium in all categories save roundness (and apparently "safety" but oh wtfever)

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I just looked at the New Jetta colors--they are so drab and they don't even offer red. So there is no way I am getting a New Jetta. I don't like how the New Jetta is more rounded and sedan like, I like the boxy Old Jetta.

I thought the Beetle would be a lot chepaer than the Jetta, bc: tiny, 2 doors, twee, but the standard package is just like 1,500 cheaper than a Jetta. Why?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a vague hankering for another "classic" SAAB 900, argh begone.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

the Beetle is what's referred to as a "Boutique" car, eg they know you ain't buying it out of pragmatism or you'd just get a golf or a jetta. The thing IS a golf for the most part, just with an Xtreme Makeover applied and the $$$ to match.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

destroy all cars

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

no

also, that matrix thing is fugly

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Personally I think if I ever actually purchase an automobile again it will either be some kind of scarily pragmatic asian jobbie like I pictured above, or a Lotus Exige:
http://www.fast-autos.net/lotus/05exige.jpg

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

If I got a Mini Cooper I could get red with white roof-- so mod.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I currently drive an '03 Jetta (silver) which I love I had a very slick Audi A4 back during dot-com mania, but the payments and *insurance* were killing me. The new Jetta exterior is terrible and makes it look like it's trying to be a corolla, which is a nice enough car, but why do this to the Jetta?!

I'm thinking about another A4 in black this time next year, maybe two or three years old as the new one's (with the full "Auto Union" style grill) aren't really that special to me. I'm also considering the Prius and the Toureg (but only because the interior is so beautiful).

While the new Jetta's styling is a mis-step, the upcomig Passat is beautiful!

My ideal ride is probably an Audi A8L or S8, or an early seventies Charger or Challenger. I agree with Toraneko upthread about F1, but I also love Le Mans.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

the talk a bit upthread sounds like deciding what clothes to buy by how they taste.

I still want that Aston Martin DB4 though...

How do you guys get away with black cars in SoCal? I drove through there once in the Beetle (late July) and could see the air off my hood trying to make mirages.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

forgot about my other ideal car: gull-wing 300 SL

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost, it's not that bad, I actually kind of like the sting of too hot leather seats/steering wheel. The only tough part is keeping them clean!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Why is the Golf relatively cheap?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer we did alright by the rain for the past few months, but now its back to washing the bitches every couple weeks again.

What are the rules of thumb for buying a used car? Do you go to a reputable dealer, or just buy from some one on Craigslist?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

xxxpost, haha! I love the 3 minute self washes, I have it down to a science!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

the car guys identified significant rear-visibility problems with the 2001 Solara, though (not that a convertible is the best idea in the first place)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost Mary, check out what edmunds.com says about it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

How do you guys get away with black cars in SoCal?

Try to park in the shade. Use windshield sunshade. Leave sunroof popped up. Sometimes leave windows cracked. Sear ass, backs of legs and hands on hot leather seats.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

OH! I'm also considering the new Mustang, which isn't really my usual style of car, but it's so beautiful and seems to be an amazing value! I like the sort of charcoal metallic version. The interior has little odd bits and pieces, but the overall shape - especially the hood and front end - is sublime.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the Mustang is a good choice if you're looking for something to have fun in for a few years and then get rid of. it's cheap for a reason --- don't be surprised if it self-destructs at 80K miles or less.

()ops (()()ps), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

the 2006 Civic looks like it is better heeding the cuteness imperative...

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and BMW has completely lost the plot. At least the new 3-series isn't completely offensive looking like the newer 7, 6, and 5.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

There is no excuse for purchasing a car that isn't this one.

Obviously a Transformer.

I like Saabs from the 1980s.

http://foto.spullenbank.nl/common/img/00/00/01/09/_T10962.jpg

I also like the car in the beginning of Ma Nuit Chez Maud.

If I were to get a car now, I would get a hybrid, but I don't know of any models that look nice.

youn, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not even red. There is not enough "red" on this thread.

Allyzay Subservient 50s-Type (allyzay), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it would not look good in red. The Alfa Romeo Spider looks very good in red.

youn, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

no no youn, it was kind of an xpost actually about that fake looking bike, though I think that car should be red too. really no one should own a non-red vehicle, is my new motto. OTM on the Spider.

Allyzay Subservient 50s-Type (allyzay), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, wait. That's a Fiat. Now I've got to search for images of boxy Fiats.

the second URL is correct, but you'll have to copy and paste to include the last bit.

youn, Wednesday, 20 April 2005 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

OH! I'm also considering the new Mustang, which isn't really my usual style of car, but it's so beautiful and seems to be an amazing value! I like the sort of charcoal metallic version.

The new Mustang is one of the few new cars I solidly like. Too bad the Ford dealerships have been nothing but asses about it - putting a $6000 to $7000 dealer "markup" on it and refusing test drives to people interested in the GT. I was able to test drive the V6 though and concluded that the GT is the only way to go - it'll pretty much pass anything except for gas stations.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

If you are going to get a Mustang, you should get this one

So anyway the Concours d'Elegance is just around the corner again and once again I'm going home to Carmel for a few days here -- not really for the cars but since other family always visit around that time it's good for a reunion.

And like last year, I'll take photos galore -- here's that 2007 set again. A couple of my favorites:

But what I want to know is 1) what's your ride, 2) what's your ideal ride, and 3) ...um... your favorite car movie. Yeah, that's the ticket.

1) Saab 9-3, bitches
2) 80's convertible Saab 900
3) Can't think of any

Electroma is actually where I first saw and liked the car, so yeah. Unoriginal of me I guess.

Totally original! Have been trying to find this one picture I recall of a red one, shot from the rear, in front of a modern house.

six years pass...

Maybe it's just the adjustment, but I had to take a rental for a few days and it's a Honda Fit and so far I fucking HATE driving this thing. Weird ass hatchback rear view, strange shape, handles weird, cannot get my spatial bearings whatsoever, driver seat sits uncomfortably. I feel like this thing was just invented to convince people to pay for the more expensive rental next time. I want my bougie accord back.
