Mitt as governor was fairly moderate because he was in MA and the state legislature wouldn't let him be anything but moderate; he did spend a good amount of time during his term marching determinedly to the right on practically every social and economic position he campaigned on so his continued drift as a presidential candidate is absolutely no surprise

My rep is the most liberal GOP congressman when it comes to "social issues" but one of the worst Israel hawks in the Congress.

For Mitt Romney, there is bad news and semi-good news. The bad news is that he’s behind and has been making mistakes. The semi-good news is that he’s not doing worse than the fundamentals predict and that the president’s lead is modest. If Romney runs a stronger campaign in the weeks ahead, and if the president makes some mistakes of his own, then the contest will be a tossup.
