“They will try to make this about little things. We have taken all the tough votes and led,” he told House colleagues in the private meeting. “Here’s our commitment: we are going to make this about the big things. We need to go on offense and we need to give our constituents the choice of two futures.”

The conference gave Ryan a standing ovation at the end, the source told TPM.

6. As Scott Wilson points out above, writing an article like this, now, is tremendously undisciplined and unhelpful. Do you have to publish, on a left-wing website, every single thing you think?

Mordy, Thursday, 20 September 2012 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

dow, it is unclear what factors have been moving the polls toward dems nationally, because there doesn't seem to be any news of any magnitude behind this, only a bunch of idiot statements by repubs like akin and romney, and maybe a growing familiarity with the ryan budget details. Consequently, since the move isn't based on anything much except a souring perception of repubs, those gains are very vulnerable to a barrage of negative ads against dems, which could lead to another souring of perception and a counter-shift.

Aimless, Thursday, 20 September 2012 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

politico is a 'left-wing website'?

stop swearing and start windmilling (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:01 (thirteen years ago)

90s/Bush-era GOP sees writing on the wall, positioning itself to blame freshman class of 2010 for everything that's gone wrong, nevermind their own guilt in obstructionism and do-nothinghood which leaves the entire party vulnerable

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

3. "Texas Gov. Rick Perry has said it’s an 'injustice' that more people don’t pay income taxes." How is this wrong? Doesn't justice require that a person pay for what he gets, more or less? Government is justified, if at all, insofar it benefits each citizen.

I'm all for this, btw, if we make sure to include the value to each individual and their family of postponing the revolution for a year. I have a feeling income tax liabilities won't change appreciably.

all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

Wonder if this kind of stuff will lead Obama/Biden to more rabble-rousing about Congress, really. Haven't heard quite as much on that, presumably because their narrative is "things are on track and getting better" but that could be amended "would have gotten better faster if not for all those clowns." I mean, if retaking the House is possible (though unlikely) makes more sense to aim for that goalpost, right?

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

yeah that's some pretty blatant shit stirring there. read a ponnuru thing a short while back that convincingly argued that the party will probably lurch further right post-election. of course schumer might be like the president and actually believe the gop will feel like taking some responsibility in governing, come to their senses, etc.

balls, Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:05 (thirteen years ago)

MOR Republicans wouldn't undercut whatever bargaining power they've got by making SCHUMER their spokesman.

Oh right – Schumer is an MOR Republican.

taking tiger mountain (up the butt) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:06 (thirteen years ago)

Schumer should take the next step and wave a piece of paper with the names of 12 GOP senators who say they'll tax the poor if Romney wins and support universal healthcare if Obama wins.

da croupier, Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:08 (thirteen years ago)

It's a "choice" election, you see

da croupier, Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

or the names of 12 GOP senators who say they'll pay taxes for the poor.

taking tiger mountain (up the butt) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:10 (thirteen years ago)

Mainstream GOP senators tell Chuck Schumer they'll come out as gay if Obama wins

da croupier, Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:11 (thirteen years ago)

i'm sure he's doing it for self-interested reasons, but it's also good for the country to tie the tea party to the upcoming election

Mordy, Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:12 (thirteen years ago)

fwiw everyone i did realize schumer was shit stirring i was just taking issue w/the delineation between mainstream and tea party, i mean sure maybe one knows better than to say all the crazy shit it believes in public but be srs the tea party is not some wild departure from just republican

lag∞n, Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:13 (thirteen years ago)

It's actually really smart messaging, almost like the kind of thing Romney is trying and failing to do with "yeah, you voted for Obama but he let you down" - - - "Yeah, it's cool if you have Republican values, but you know who doesn't, these days? THE REPUBLICANS! Yup, they've been taken over by extremists!" Almost like a movie pitch. The GOP has been kidnapped by the Tea Party - are you a bad enough dude to vote for Obama?

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:16 (thirteen years ago)

well on one hand you've got schumer telling dems that the gop wants to cave on the whole obstructionist thing, and on the other he's telling republicans that some of them may already be democrats.

da croupier, Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:18 (thirteen years ago)

haha http://www.salon.com/2012/09/20/politico_politico_stories_dont_matter

lag∞n, Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

but be srs the tea party is not some wild departure from just republican

well, a republican can be moderate, extremist, or anything in between. a tea partier is p much an extremist by definition.

i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:24 (thirteen years ago)

there are no moderate republicans anymore, extinct, gone, zip, zilch, rip
