i bet they took it down when they were moving stuff around. Apple is shocking at keeping old links working.

Was going to say, I have no problem with that world actually existing so long as I didn't have to get around in it.

it is kind of jarring scrolling through a long-ass article and seeing all the restaurants and maps being things in my neighborhood

cake-like Lady Gaga (DJP), Thursday, 20 September 2012 18:31 (thirteen years ago)

has apple ever had a successful server-side service? ever? apart from the stores, I guess.

AppleLink. Until it was replaced by eWorld

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 20 September 2012 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

yeah these maps certainly are "dramatically" better than the old ones, thanks for the review guys

the bad:
- everything everyone has mentioned upthread
- the wtf colour-matched top bar thing that goes an insipid aqua most of the time

the good:
- pinyin input (if you type 'nhm' you get '你好吗' (this is hugely time-saving))

how to get to melbourne airport:

1. drive nw along calder freeway
2. turn right where there is not a road
3. drive THROUGH SOME FARMS AND ALONG A FUCKING AIRFIELD TARMAC

this thing is terrible

i decided to test it on the following route today:

1) drive two blocks down my street
2) turn right, drive straight 1.6 miles

i set it to figure out the route as i was pulling out the driveway, by the time i got there it had worked long enough to tell me that it couldn't figure it out

i'm going to plug this thing into my mac and restore ios5

I found one feature I really love: reading list syncs while safari isn't running. I bookmark pages on my mac and the full page is on my phone when I get on the tube

Today's Times:

Eamon Yates, 26, and his friend Ben Paton, 25, both employed in the IT industry, and third and fourth in the queue, began camping in the Covent Garden Piazza on Wednesday and had booked time off work to do so.

Mr Paton said: “We both work for the same company and we’ve both taken three days off for this, and I think that’s one of the things that a lot of people don’t realise.

“They think you must be on benefits or a bum, but no, no, I’ve taken time off, I’ve made the effort, I want to do this, this is what I want to do with my time.”

Fucking hell.

sktsh, Friday, 21 September 2012 07:45 (thirteen years ago)

Played with new maps on ipad last night. The tiles are horrible, all roads the same colour and spidery thin. The data is appalling, places that closed or changed hands five years ago, a petrol station where there is a convenience store, a bar where there is a dance studio, all within 1/4 mile of my home. But 3d maps is pretty awesome. Slow, and glitchy for non-cuboid buildings, but still a way cool way of seeing yr city (if you happen to live in one that's been 3d mapped).

ledge, Friday, 21 September 2012 08:09 (thirteen years ago)

although it is basically a gimmick.

there I was thinking the mapocalypse was merely a series of glitches and at worst an inferior solution that would improve over time. now that it has actively fucked over this evening AND my plans for tomorrow morning, I can now see that this is very genuinely the biggest software clusterfuck of the 21st century.

we went to inspect a flat that mapocalypse listed in two separate locations, neither of which is correct. we can't even use street view to work out where it is. two days ago that would have been fine.
