"... how the fuck are you still alive?"

Brakhage, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 03:53 (thirteen years ago)

Stephen Root's character pretty delightful this episode

fadanuf4erybody, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 04:48 (thirteen years ago)

Not nearly as good as the first, there were some slightly dull sequences I thought. But it built up to a great climax. The new antagonist is pretty chilling.

I don't really care about Margaret any more.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 06:44 (thirteen years ago)

^^^ so uninteresting now, which is a shame, because i think she's a solid actress

this episode was slow, but fit into formula, they usually tone things down after an explosive episode like the first one, feel like the next one with have some serious kills

also still super crushing on Billie Kent, that smile!

I was only half paying attention, I have to rewatch it again tonight...

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 15:46 (thirteen years ago)

This was my favorite ep in a long time, loved the slow pacing and how every scene was built around solid acting perfs

Trying to recall where I'd seen Mr Fishbowl before - his voice is especially familiar

Brakhage, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 17:01 (thirteen years ago)

Its Stephen Root! The "red stapler" guy from Office Space (among many others). I was so glad to see him show up.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 17:04 (thirteen years ago)

Whoa really? He's amazing

Brakhage, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 17:49 (thirteen years ago)

He's in a bunch of coen bros stuff, always incredible. (Also the judge on Justified).

Clay, Tuesday, 25 September 2012 18:06 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, he's always a great character addition whenever he shows up

and his King of the Hill stuff is all-time, of course

Will watch first season tonight for the first time

taking tiger mountain (up the butt) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 18:08 (thirteen years ago)

Good luck, first season's a mixed bag.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 18:31 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah it's kinda slow to get going - hang in there for the first 4 or 5 eps, it'll start to pick up from about the halfway mark.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 25 September 2012 18:32 (thirteen years ago)

It picks up a bit when Harrow is introduced! But yeah, even then it's really hit or miss. I plowed through the first two seasons a couple weeks ago and can barely remember what happened in season 1.

what did people think of last night's?

this show sort of trundles along for me without ever being amazing but i kinda enjoy it. the margaret storylines are really annoying tho, partly cos of her horrendous simpering irish accent but also just cos her entire character seems increasingly pointless.

this show sort of trundles along for me without ever being amazing

this is where I am, two episodes from the end of the first season.

the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 1 October 2012 21:34 (thirteen years ago)

aw I was thinking how much I like Margaret's end around to get the women's ward...she's a hardass, I kind of love her for it

last night's was nice, not a lot happening but setting up some things

I wanna know who else Billy's seeing that's got Nucky so discombobulated.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 1 October 2012 21:41 (thirteen years ago)

I would have agreed with that entirely prior to the final few eps of s2. And this season is displaying considerable evidence of being the strongest so far. I'm totally digging Gyp.

Glad they seem to have wrapped up Margaret's woman's clinic storyline already, though presumably it will dovetail into an equally tedious affair with that doctor fellow.

Gyp is insane, and great to watch

this is where I am, two episodes from the end of the first season.

lol... believe me season 2 (eventually) and 3 get better, i wouldn't even use "trundle" to describe the inessential feel of the first 15 eps or so of this.

xpost chap otm.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 1 October 2012 21:45 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know if I've ever seen the super-prickly thin-skinned gangster archetype carried to such an extreme before. Lovely contrast to Nucky's pragmatism. (re gyp)

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Monday, 1 October 2012 21:48 (thirteen years ago)

Shit, Nucky just keeps getting colder and colder eh?

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Monday, 8 October 2012 11:32 (thirteen years ago)

Really cleverly done that they completely hoodwinked you into thinking that kid was going to become a regular character.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Monday, 8 October 2012 11:37 (thirteen years ago)

anyone watching now? i enjoyed last night, but just for the record, i'm not the only one who spends half of the episode thinking "who now", "who's that", "what deal, who?", am i?

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 13:38 (thirteen years ago)

I definitely haven't got all the NY guys straight in my head. Everyone else I'm pretty much OK with.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 13:39 (thirteen years ago)

yeah idk i miss michael pitt

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 13:40 (thirteen years ago)

I dunno, he was a good character but in retrospect it seems that he was always heading towards destruction. I think it's great that shows nowadays are willing to sacrifice very major characters for the sake of a dynamic storyline.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 14:04 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, that was really well done with the kid. At one point he flashed a smile that reminded me a lot of Michael Pitt and I was set in the, "oh Nucky is going to adopt this kid, isn't he?" mode. Oops.

The only time I've been getting confused wrt characters lately is the subplot with Lucky Luciano.

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 14:07 (thirteen years ago)

yeah that's the one I'm unsure of, though the al johnny torio stuff is confusing too. I also couldn't remember Nucky's stuff being robbed by that kid.

wish they'd just commence/end leprechaun schroder's affair with that doctor already, god it's tedious.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 14:12 (thirteen years ago)

Her accent annoys me considerably, I can't imagine the effect it must have on an Irishman such as yourself.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

it's the worst irish accent i've ever heard, i think. it also infects the character and stops any other feeling coming through apart from the simpering of the accent.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 14:16 (thirteen years ago)

I also find her over-perfect grammar pretty irritating.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 14:17 (thirteen years ago)

PS You've obviously never heard my attempt at an Irish accent.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 14:18 (thirteen years ago)

I like how Van Alden's thread is kid of developing into a pitch black farce. Much better use of him than sitting in an apartment with a screaming baby and the most annoying woman in the world.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Monday, 15 October 2012 15:19 (thirteen years ago)

I'm an episode behind -- goddamn the scenes with Capone and his little son got me good and teary. Dang.

I just let the pretty pictures flicker past my eyeballs, noting the lovely wallpaper, curved fanlights, and flaming bodies

kinder, Thursday, 18 October 2012 22:20 (thirteen years ago)

okay so this might be a dumb question but is Jimmy's Mom REALLY unaware that he was murdered?

how did I miss that before now? I thought she knew.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 18 October 2012 22:23 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I'm a bit confused about that too
