The clumsy feminism of younger posters is kind of the paternalism I was checking earlier.
On a related note, they have a reddit called "women in yoga pants." It is pictures of... well, you get it

I just wrote about a guy in California who talked about shooting children for their shoes on an online ESPN comments section. Wonder if they know each other.

― barthes simpson, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 16:15 (thirteen years ago)
I registered for reddit like six years ago; I'll look at the front page now and then, tried to set up subreddits as a way to prise some kind of utility out of the place, failed. I definitely know ppl (non ilx) that READ it for time wasting (cats) but I don't think anyone i know actually "reddits." commenting system is confusing, lots of idiots, etc. many corners best left uninvestigated (in addition to the out and out misogyny and paternalism that mh referenced, there's creepy picture subreddits...which, I actually found out about because of, I think, a link on the front page to the gawker story about same).
I'll admit that I'm not sure I've ever been to SA?
― catbus otm (gbx), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 18:00 (thirteen years ago)
i have been to something awful but that was like twenty years ago when it just pictures of dead people and car wrecks. i'm always a little surprised it's still around as a 'community'
― goole, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 20:05 (thirteen years ago)
Most of my SA time was about 10 years ago and mostly only to check out the photoshop fridays.

― goole, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 20:07 (thirteen years ago)
rotten dot com?
― max, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 20:07 (thirteen years ago)
are you thinking of rotten.com?
― heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 20:07 (thirteen years ago)
yeah, rotten.com always seemed a much more respectable source of dead people and car wrecks, though.
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 20:10 (thirteen years ago)
I think I've avoided SA for the same reason as goole --- I thought it rotten.com (which as a college student I was required to see at least once)
― catbus otm (gbx), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 20:12 (thirteen years ago)
it was right after the swim test iirc
― catbus otm (gbx), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)
what was that old website that was just like a list and compendium of awful/horrifying/hilarious websites? it was a black and red scheme, iirc. can totally picture it but can't think of the name.
― heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 20:14 (thirteen years ago)
lol, i have the same rotten.com/something awful confusion
― i know your nuts hurt! who's laughing? (contenderizer), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 20:14 (thirteen years ago)
I checked in on Fark.com because of this thread and Good Lord, they're still using "Hilarity Ensues" in every other headline.

― barthes simpson, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)
all these late 90s-early 00s websites that were the equivalent of buying a marilyn manson cd at the age of 12
― barthes simpson, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 20:29 (thirteen years ago)
salon.com or slate.com?
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)
the one i'm thinking of wasn't stile project, it was just like links and short descriptions for other batshit sites and personal pages (a whole lot of geocities stuff, iirc). i'm 90% sure its where i first saw peter pan guy.

― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 20:36 (thirteen years ago)
nah, god this is driving me crazy. this was like very end of the 90s, like about the same period as fatchicksinpartyhats and that original mullet website.

― Spectrum, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)
that's almost definitely portal of evil, which had all the shock sites/early net memes
on that note, does anyone remember that one early meme of...I wanna say it was a Turkish guy whose site was in *wacky* broken English or something? Maher maybe?

Here is that Reddit AMA:I was an internet meme: the Hello My Future Girlfriend kid. AMA.
featuring dude's gay.com profile, which sadly does not say "hello my future boyfriend"
― still small voice of clam (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 21:29 (thirteen years ago)
wow. so star wars kid is now like the Resident of internet memes. he's the only one that hasn't publicly "come out"/done interviews isn't he?
