tumblr's kind of amazing, isn't it - there are so many different cultures happening on it, and when you talk about it you'd say "people who have tumblrs" and assume your interlocutor knows what you mean but maybe their experience of tumblr is totally different, maybe they think you mean SJ folks and actually you mean street fashion folks.

basically i would like someone to do a project where they 'map' tumblr to work out what percentage is taken up by different cultures, and how these cultures cross over.

of course the fascination is only increased by how opaque tumblr is - the 'notes' that don't differentiate likes and reblogs, how hard it is to follow reblogged conversation, the way that if you follow more than 100 people you stop seeing posts from the people you followed first (apparently), the crufty tag system. nothing like the clarity of e.g. a reddit or a slashdot or a mefi.

chasm jar pro (c sharp major), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 10:12 (thirteen years ago)

like there are currently 4390 'notes' on an image which is a cat 'shopped into the cover of 'lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven' and it's just-- how big is tumblr that there are like 4000 people on it who are excited by the image of a cat 'shopped into the cover of 'lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven'.

chasm jar pro (c sharp major), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 10:16 (thirteen years ago)

the answer is that it has 74.2 million blogs on it BUT STILL

i don't know why i did that

one of the circles on the tumblr venn is 'people who are still earnest about godspeed you black emperor', i guess:

I wish tumblr didn't have a 10mb audio post limit so that I could share with you the enormity of "Storm" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Probably the greatest musical piece I’ve ever experienced. It’s one of those songs that you enjoy very seldomly so that the full impact of it is never lost; so that each of its 22 and a half minutes of glory are never exhausted.

#godspeed you! black emperor #post-rock #2000 #pinnacle

thomp, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 10:48 (thirteen years ago)

Step away from the indie event horizon, man...

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 10:56 (thirteen years ago)

You could post a picture of the word "cat" written on a napkin and it'd get 4000 likes

okay, what are the hands with the emergency bracelets. my first three guesses were broken social scene, dismemberment plan, and death cab for cutie, but no luck.

i think antlers - hospice

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 11:15 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think I'd heard of it before now. Indie must have been in a period of stagnation between 2000 and 2009.

stURGEON & musKEY (how's life), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 11:41 (thirteen years ago)

the 'notes' that don't differentiate likes and reblogs.

The 'likes' that don't differentiate between liking the originals and the rebuttals!

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 11:54 (thirteen years ago)

an example of a better social justice board on reddit: "SRSDiscussion is a modded progressive-oriented forum for discussing issues of social justice. Our goal is to foster a safe space for the perspectives of minorities and marginalized people. Comments which are discordant with the ethos of social progressivism will be removed, and users who post in bad faith will be banned."

Hospice tells the story of a relationship between a hospice worker and a female patient suffering from terminal bone cancer, their ensuing romance, and their slow downward spiral as a result of the woman's traumas, fears, and disease. Frontman Peter Silberman has been reluctant to divulge explicit details regarding the meaning of the record, and the extent to which it is autobiographical.

thomp, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:07 (thirteen years ago)

hue hue, will be with you till the end ilxor. stage 4 cancer is teh end for you but you will be in my heart forever.

Sébastien, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:11 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think I want to listen to that album!

stURGEON & musKEY (how's life), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:13 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't made it all the way through any of the records in that jpg, so no surprise, really.

stURGEON & musKEY (how's life), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:14 (thirteen years ago)

Peter Silberman – vocals, guitar, accordion, harmonica, harp, keyboards
Michael Lerner – drums, percussion
Darby Cicci – trumpet, bowed banjo
Justin Stivers – bass

thomp, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:21 (thirteen years ago)

misread that and thought "how do you blow a banjo?"

stURGEON & musKEY (how's life), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:23 (thirteen years ago)

i've listened to that record! it's ok

ciderpress, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:25 (thirteen years ago)

it got a lot of aeroplane comparisons when it came out iirc since its the same sort of creepy heart-on-sleeve emotional indie record

ciderpress, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:26 (thirteen years ago)

it's a good record, tho i like the other 3 there also so naturally i have the worst taste

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:30 (thirteen years ago)

There are 4 others there. You have the worst eyes as well.

stURGEON & musKEY (how's life), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:31 (thirteen years ago)

why isn't there an Arcade Fide album on there (or is there???)

frogbs, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:35 (thirteen years ago)

Yes. Someone add the one whose tracklisting is almost exclusively the word "Neighborhood".

stURGEON & musKEY (how's life), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:37 (thirteen years ago)

ohh, that icon is gybe or something right. idgaf abt them

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:40 (thirteen years ago)

the worst thing about reddit is the casual racism/sexism. it makes me glad for ilx's overly sensitive, hand-wringing ways.

gawker getting on its high horse about reddit is always a bit of an eyeroll. you post celebrity boob shots = you've ceded some of your righteous ground.

bnw, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 13:48 (thirteen years ago)

The clumsy feminism of younger posters is kind of the paternalism I was checking earlier.

On a related note, they have a reddit called "women in yoga pants." It is pictures of... well, you get it

what does "be commentin'" mean

barthes simpson, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

I registered for reddit like six years ago; I'll look at the front page now and then, tried to set up subreddits as a way to prise some kind of utility out of the place, failed. I definitely know ppl (non ilx) that READ it for time wasting (cats) but I don't think anyone i know actually "reddits." commenting system is confusing, lots of idiots, etc. many corners best left uninvestigated (in addition to the out and out misogyny and paternalism that mh referenced, there's creepy picture subreddits...which, I actually found out about because of, I think, a link on the front page to the gawker story about same).

I'll admit that I'm not sure I've ever been to SA?

catbus otm (gbx), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 18:00 (thirteen years ago)

i have been to something awful but that was like twenty years ago when it just pictures of dead people and car wrecks. i'm always a little surprised it's still around as a 'community'

goole, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 20:05 (thirteen years ago)

Most of my SA time was about 10 years ago and mostly only to check out the photoshop fridays.

rotten dot com?

max, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 20:07 (thirteen years ago)

are you thinking of rotten.com?

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 20:07 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, rotten.com always seemed a much more respectable source of dead people and car wrecks, though.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

I think I've avoided SA for the same reason as goole --- I thought it rotten.com (which as a college student I was required to see at least once)
