My housemates an SA goon and the way he talks about it, he might as well be talking about ILX, srsly they have the same discussions and everything, it is weird.

one of my closest friends spends a lot of time on metafilter and lj/tumblr 'fandom' spaces and we spend a slightly embarrassing amount of time comparing internet beefs/discussions/news reactions and talking about the culture of different spaces. it is endlessly fascinating to me.

(admittedly i am a person who uses the 'human relations' tag on ask metafilter as a pick-me-up when i need to feel better about myself)

can I put in a call for clarification on"feefees" in the context of social justice tumblrs? i read the urban dictionary entry and can't work out how that definition applies.

It probably comes as no surprise that I really hate the term “fee-fees.” For those of you more fortunate than I, “fee-fees” is a disparaging term that SJ folks throw around. It means “feelings” and is usually used in the context of “I don’t care about your fee-fees,” or “oh no, your precious fee-fees!” or other statements of obvious merit and discursive might.

i also had one once for about 4 posts that was inspired by "dayo" after he revealed the formula for his name, but the name I came up with was significantly less cool than his, so i switched it rather quickly.

/stops hunting for fee-fee packed how's life tumblr

tumblr's kind of amazing, isn't it - there are so many different cultures happening on it, and when you talk about it you'd say "people who have tumblrs" and assume your interlocutor knows what you mean but maybe their experience of tumblr is totally different, maybe they think you mean SJ folks and actually you mean street fashion folks.

basically i would like someone to do a project where they 'map' tumblr to work out what percentage is taken up by different cultures, and how these cultures cross over.

of course the fascination is only increased by how opaque tumblr is - the 'notes' that don't differentiate likes and reblogs, how hard it is to follow reblogged conversation, the way that if you follow more than 100 people you stop seeing posts from the people you followed first (apparently), the crufty tag system. nothing like the clarity of e.g. a reddit or a slashdot or a mefi.

like there are currently 4390 'notes' on an image which is a cat 'shopped into the cover of 'lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven' and it's just-- how big is tumblr that there are like 4000 people on it who are excited by the image of a cat 'shopped into the cover of 'lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven'.

it got a lot of aeroplane comparisons when it came out iirc since its the same sort of creepy heart-on-sleeve emotional indie record

the worst thing about reddit is the casual racism/sexism. it makes me glad for ilx's overly sensitive, hand-wringing ways.

gawker getting on its high horse about reddit is always a bit of an eyeroll. you post celebrity boob shots = you've ceded some of your righteous ground.

The clumsy feminism of younger posters is kind of the paternalism I was checking earlier.

On a related note, they have a reddit called "women in yoga pants." It is pictures of... well, you get it
