do people have discussions on tumblrs? maybe it keeps things positive by discouraging discussion...

tumblr is way fucked up
― goole, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:56 (eleven years ago) link
i had the beginning of an argument from evidence there but fuck it
tumblr is the worst platform ever but i find it fascinating
― max, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link
between the pro-anas, the nazis and the porn, i think it's safe to say that tumblr is fucked up, is my point
― goole, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link
and yes the interface is ?????!?!????!?!????
― goole, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:58 (eleven years ago) link
i'd suspect that the tenor of nazi ana porn rhetoric on tumblr is much more light and positive than on reddit.
― Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:00 (eleven years ago) link
but also the otherkin and the social-justice radicals and the hundreds of thousands of anime/k-pop gifs

w/shallow depth of field xp
― stet, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:01 (eleven years ago) link
all three are very into pretty pictures now that i think of it, if that counts as positive

i'm surprised metafilter is still around, i remember reading it like 10 years ago but hadn't heard anything about it since until this thread
it still looks exactly the same too, hah
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:03 (eleven years ago) link
most tumblrs i cant figure out how the hell people comment on them. but there`ll be like 13 thumbs up or hearts or whatever on a post, then like, one person leaving an almost totally content-free comment.
― how's life, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:07 (eleven years ago) link
metafilter totally looks ten or twelve years ago. that's another thing about reddit, is that I've gone to the site a couple times and it wasn't visually inviting, so I peaced.
― how's life, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:10 (eleven years ago) link
lol u read reddit
― buzza, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:12 (eleven years ago) link
yeh cos you can hardly move for gradients and rounded corners here
― stet, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:14 (eleven years ago) link
metafilter still consistently trafficked, I've spotted a few ilxors over there. I think the median age seems older, but there are a lot of known personalities and in-jokes and, yeah, very po-faced these days
reddit's frontpage culture is like a whirlpool of mediocrity sucking in a variety of interests but ends up pandering to a 20 year old white male in college who plays video games, likes cat pictures, and has odd paternalistic or misogynistic views but no self-consciousness about it. I can skim over the front page or two occasionally if I want lots of links but little content, and can go to specific areas that are about topics. Most of the topical areas are total cesspools, but it's a large enough site that some of them get enough traffic to gain popularity.
The image-site mining areas and the people exposing themselves for site cred are kind of the worst

pretty much none of the tumblrs I follow ever have any written content, so I forget that there is this other tumblr where people write stuff.

I started a thread like this a week ago, but no one commented on it. Oh well.

With the spare time I've had to myself since I made that thread and my wife left me, I have this new way of organizing snacks.

What do you think?
I've had to work a whole lot lately, so my dog stays at home by himself a lot.

Yeah, he's on the couch, but who cares anymore. What do you think?
An upvote would make my day.
My address is 2400 Cottondale Lane, Little Rock, Arkansas if someone wants to send me a pizza.
pplains has the reddit frontpage ethic on lock, here

My grandmother's about to die in three hours. It would mean the world to her if someone could colorize this.

I've tried to dig into reddit a couple times (halfheartedly) since my job involves internet & social media but the way comments are threaded I find it super confusing and non-user-friendly
xpost - lol

I do (this is really me talking now) browse the pics section for stuff like the border image below or some goofy national georgraphic shit.
But I'm not registered and I avoid the comments. The people who post there and like 89% of the boards are pure (something)awful.

I know a couple somethingawful members, they are actually pretty reasonable these days
― ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:32 (eleven years ago) link
yeah SA these days is mostly just a bunch of jaded nerds, they relinquished the whole meme generation/funny photoshop aspect of the site to reddit years ago
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:35 (eleven years ago) link
and the funniest people on SA have all moved their acts to twitter anyway
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:36 (eleven years ago) link
it all kind of depends which forum you're on. some of them are full of really helpful and geeky people (such as the music board), who don't mind writing 3,000 words on Muse or whatever if you ask them "what's the best album"? other forums are full of people who try way, way too hard to imitate old front page articles, "wouldn't it be funny if I talked about something mundane but used a lot of fucking profanity!?"
― frogbs, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:39 (eleven years ago) link
One of the dudes who died in the attack on the US consulate in Libya was a SA goon. Pretty influential in their community for the game EVE online. My friend seems to mostly go to that forum and the car one.
Not sure what forum my other friend frequented on there, but she was on SA for a really long time.
― ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:40 (eleven years ago) link
speaking of SA today's article is a bit of wonderfully hamfisted self-parody
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:43 (eleven years ago) link
I hardly post there anymore and didn't really miss it, between the powertripping mods and the dudes who ruin FYAD it's kind of a big nerd ego exercise (like most message boards, really)
― frogbs, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:48 (eleven years ago) link
yeah i've been on there since high school but the past few years i've only used the games forums pretty much
its still a much better forum than reddit though!
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:51 (eleven years ago) link
as a bored-at-work programmer I am guilty of reading Hacker News despite harbouring violent thoughts about all the "entrepreneurs" who are going to change the world with their crappy iphone app startups, like, any day now, bro, I've totally read all the free ebooks on how to be the next Zuckerberg
still even the weekly threads about women in tech (inevitable comments: 99% "women don't like computers and aren't very good at them but that's their own choice so they should shut up whining") don't usually make me quite as angry as the Reddit "I am a serial rapist, AMA about my totally awesome life and lack of remorse" thread I fell over this week
(I am not linking this because it was depressing and maddening and I'd guess triggering, but I'm sure you can find it if you really want to hate everyone)
PS I just wrote a youtube comment in a language I am not fluent in, which I'm sure will be grammatically incorrect and make someone go "wtf with these illiterate morans all over youtube" in 3... 2... 1

SA sucks but its produced some of the funniest ppl and greatest memes on the internet so its kind of a wash
― max, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:59 (eleven years ago) link
which ones?
― Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:01 (eleven years ago) link
nothing's worse than an unfunny dude desperately trying to create the next big meme
― frogbs, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:01 (eleven years ago) link
however I do applaud SA's devotion to turning those incomprehensible "Bart the General" Simpsons videos into a legit meme that basically nobody understood (if there was even anything to understand!)
― frogbs, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:02 (eleven years ago) link
this wasn't exactly a big one but "Sonic in Search for Love" is legitimately one of the funniest things I've ever seen on the internet so there's that
I think they did "All Your Base" and "hopkin green frog", can't remember any other ones off the top of my head
― frogbs, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:03 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah I think that's what bugs me so much about some of these sites, its all people trying so damn hard to create the next huge meme, not understanding that the best ones just sort of happen.
― heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:04 (eleven years ago) link
the smash mouth eat the eggs thing was pretty classic
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:05 (eleven years ago) link
What I mean is like, on some of these site you can almost heard the guys behind them thinking, "right this meme is going to be HUGE" and not, "lol this is funny".
― heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:05 (eleven years ago) link
i've only heard of all your base, and the genius part of all your base belongs to original translator, not whatever joker added breakbeats to it.is "sonic" a similar thing?
― Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:06 (eleven years ago) link
When somebody tries too hard to go viral you end up with stuff like those bizarre Quizno's commercials or Snakes on a Plane. I don't know how many huge viral videos out there were made with the specific intent of going viral (maybe "Chocolate Rain"??)
― frogbs, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:07 (eleven years ago) link
chocolate rain seemed pretty sincere to me
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link
I'm thinking more about image macros though, not really videos. Just like dudes that slap up caption after caption after caption in the hopes that something sticks.
― heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link
uh those bizarre quiznos commercials were a blatant attempt to license stuff from a video site that had already gone viral, although mostly for other videos on the site (rathergood)
