metafilter is objectionable too, but it's right at the opposite end of the spectrum from reddit's misogyny4u, over at the the po-faced navel-observation end. We're somewhere in the happy middle, I guess?

But ye I spend time on both: Metafilter gives better link than reddit, but for tech stuff I can bear the horrible nerds on the programming reddit more than the "bro, bro, watch me pivot" clan on Hacker News

(The traffic that reddit sends is astounding, btw. We more than doubled our daily average when a link got on reddit, and it wasn't even on the front page, it was buried somewhere with 5 upvotes)

I think there are cooler dudes per capita on metafilter but on average it's about the same as reddit. i'd recommend straightdope over metafilter.

most tumblrs i cant figure out how the hell people comment on them. but there`ll be like 13 thumbs up or hearts or whatever on a post, then like, one person leaving an almost totally content-free comment.

metafilter still consistently trafficked, I've spotted a few ilxors over there. I think the median age seems older, but there are a lot of known personalities and in-jokes and, yeah, very po-faced these days

reddit's frontpage culture is like a whirlpool of mediocrity sucking in a variety of interests but ends up pandering to a 20 year old white male in college who plays video games, likes cat pictures, and has odd paternalistic or misogynistic views but no self-consciousness about it. I can skim over the front page or two occasionally if I want lots of links but little content, and can go to specific areas that are about topics. Most of the topical areas are total cesspools, but it's a large enough site that some of them get enough traffic to gain popularity.

The image-site mining areas and the people exposing themselves for site cred are kind of the worst

pretty much none of the tumblrs I follow ever have any written content, so I forget that there is this other tumblr where people write stuff.

I started a thread like this a week ago, but no one commented on it. Oh well.

With the spare time I've had to myself since I made that thread and my wife left me, I have this new way of organizing snacks.

I've tried to dig into reddit a couple times (halfheartedly) since my job involves internet & social media but the way comments are threaded I find it super confusing and non-user-friendly

I do (this is really me talking now) browse the pics section for stuff like the border image below or some goofy national georgraphic shit.

But I'm not registered and I avoid the comments. The people who post there and like 89% of the boards are pure (something)awful.

yeah SA these days is mostly just a bunch of jaded nerds, they relinquished the whole meme generation/funny photoshop aspect of the site to reddit years ago

I would simply not seek out /r/guysbeingdudestogether if I was annoyed by that content.

i just go to reddit.com and look at whatever comes up so i'm kind of at the mercy of whatever is most popular, for better or worse

Every platform requires curating your feed - even ILX. Unless a platform is actively hostile to that (Facebook, mostly), letting the algorithm serve you a pile of turds is a user error.

If I go to reddit.com it’s almost entirely sports highlights and posts from music/instrument subreddits. The worst things I see are the centrist libs of indieheads and European soccer fans.

idk i feel like having a reddit account is kind of an L. i just go there for the same reason i would stare at the magazine selection in a grocery store. because there's nothing better to do and it's strangely horrifying yet appealing
