Strangest thing about it is reading right-wing people saying (more or less) that the right-wing mythmaking about welfare cheats and dependents and stuff is, like, soooo last millenium. Kind of bizarre. I don't read Brooks regularly so I don't know what his schtick is exactly but a lot of stuff in that column seems like it would crack the GOP's head right open if it actually got fully absorbed.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 04:25 (thirteen years ago)

ok, seriously guys. how many more times between now and nov 6th is romney going to lose the election? it's like a once a week thing now.

Mordy, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 04:26 (thirteen years ago)

I think his main strategy is to keep effing things up in this way, lulling all Democrats into a false sense of security, and having everyone who was going to vote Obama stay home cos THERE'S NO WAY he would win.

The revelations in this video come to me as a genuine shock.

"His popular vote is going to be respectable, because of high percentages in hardcore rightwing states, like Tornado Alley and the solid south."

Yeah all of those states that get an extra pull on the federal teat than what they put into the kitty, which is the real funny flips of this guy moaning about all this crap in the first place.

It was pretty obvious in how hard it was for Romney to rise out of the clown college Republican primary that you were not really working with a real polished campaign politician, but this guy is just terrible.

That video is pretty amazing. Its funny that they are eventually going to have to ask all of these rich doners to drop off their cell phones and be patted down before going into the rubber chicken dinner, as they don't want any of the back room talk to get out. I'm surprised it got out. Bush got re-elected and he did not really speak that much in public ever in front of an open crowd, it was always this well manufactured audience.

earlnash, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 05:35 (thirteen years ago)

from the brooks article:

n 1987, during Ronald Reagan’s second term, 62 percent of Republicans believed that the government has a responsibility to help those who can’t help themselves. Now, according to the Pew Research Center, only 40 percent of Republicans believe that.

ugh, any response less than 100% is wrong, but 40%, baaaaaaaaaaarf

i wonder who they think legitimately can't help themselves

j., Tuesday, 18 September 2012 05:47 (thirteen years ago)

The whole thing sounds again like the danger of believing your own bullshit. It's one thing to trot out that 47% number as a rhetorical device if you're a rightwing blogger, it's another to actually believe that it means what you're saying it means, and another again to leap from that to somehow thinking that all of those people are Democrats because Democrats love gubmint. Or, conversely, that people who do pay income taxes must hate paying income taxes and are therefore Republican (or reachable for Republicans). None of those things are true, so if (as Romney suggests) you're building actual campaign strategy on the basis of those beliefs, you're going to get killed. (Of course it's possible he's just telling the donors what they want to hear, but he sounds pretty sincere about it all.)

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 08:02 (thirteen years ago)

I think it's probably the latter - the sincerity is just relaxation amongst his peers.

If you're on the dole, you've abdicated your responsibility. As they say, from there, it's just a matter of negotiating price. I don't care who you are - corn farmer, crack dealer, single mother of 84, whoever...

Now, if that sentiment shames 3 people out of taking help they don't truly need or voting for free stuff as a reflex, it works for me.

In the end, all but the truly needy will hopefully be openly disparaged and shamed for raiding funds provided by taxpayers. Ready your indignation, parasites of opportunity.

Funny being in Toronto this morning--no mention at all of Romney's bad day on the radio, it's all about Yunel Escobar's bad day.

Its funny that they are eventually going to have to ask all of these rich doners to drop off their cell phones and be patted down

Actually heard the opposite yesterday--that they'd be inviting the media into fundraisers the rest of the way, sort of a Stop Me Before I Say Something Stupid strategy. Probably just something that they threw out there hoping to quell the commotion.

It's worth recalling that Obama was speaking about Democrats who were voting in the primary for Hillary Clinton. So Obama seems to have contempt not just for the Republicans who oppose him, but for millions of Americans who ended up voting for him in November 2008.

this guy is so fucking stupid.

Kristol:

It remains important for the country that Romney wins in November (unless he chooses to step down and we get the Ryan-Rubio ticket we deserve!)

I don't even know where to start with this.

The specifics are these, which is those principles I described (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 15:04 (thirteen years ago)

Also more videos out today. Romney to Palestine: "Suck it."

re "just telling donors what they want to hear": campaign saying he really cares about everybody, so "just telling" might indeed be the implication, but so far he's saying his comments "might have been more elegantly put", while letting their substance stand.

dow, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 16:00 (thirteen years ago)

man i hadn't caught this, it feels like such a fantastically nihilistic thing to say out loud:

"You hope for some degree of stability, but you recognize that this is going to remain an unsolved problem, and we kick the ball down the field and hope that ultimately, somehow, something will happen and resolve it," Romney said.

let's get the banned back together (schlump), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 16:06 (thirteen years ago)

"I didn't mean I don't care about those lazy entitled freeloaders in my heart, I just mean in my campaign."

da croupier, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 16:06 (thirteen years ago)

So this is Jonah's complaint about Romney: "But even so, Romney’s remarks reinforce the overriding problem with his campaign: It is bloodlessly non-ideological. "

http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/romney-will-address-leaked-video-on-fox-news

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 16:58 (thirteen years ago)

It is bloodlessly non-ideological.

By this he means that Romney is no good at tossing out bloody hunks of red meat to the base when he speaks. The red meat is in there, but he throws it too clumsily and the audience never gets worked into a real froth.

Aimless, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 16:58 (thirteen years ago)

As for that Lowry piece:

The overall impression of Romney at this event is of someone who overhead some conservative cocktail chatter and maybe read a conservative blog or two, and is thoughtlessly repeating back what he heard and read.

Why do I have the feeling Erick Erickson is about to flip his lid.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 16:59 (thirteen years ago)

"ultimately, somehow, something will happen and resolve it," Romney said.

He continued, "I don't know when. But just saying it could even make it happen."
