Hey, you know what would defuse this whole situation? Gratuitous rape comparisons.

Just catching up with all the fallout. My own first reaction this morning, and I know this is awful, was "Will this affect the election?"--would it be the one unexpected thing that always seems to happen. Reading through all the commentary here, I take it that Romney really messed up. I tuned in to a few minutes of right-wing radio on the way home, and of course it was "Carter-hostage crisis-Carter-hostage crisis" (the contention being that Obama's even weaker). That was strangely reassuring.

Boy, re: JoeStoek's link, John Kyl knows how to step in some irony, since a judge in his own state recently did exactly what he's describing.

CNN just had one of Romney's foreign-policy guys on with Robert Wexler. He barely let Wexler speak, just raising his voice and talking over him, and he kept trying to trip Wexler up over semantics. He behaved very much like somebody trying to will a dumb mistake away.

Anti-terror demonstrations by Libyan Muslims in Benghazi and Tripoli: http://gawker.com/5942767/in-response-to-benghazi-attack-libyans-hold-powerful-anti+terror-demonstrations/gallery/1

In photos posted online by Internet media outlet Libya Alhurra TV (Free Libya TV) and the Libyan Center for Documentation, citizens of Benghazi can be seen holding bilingual signs with anti-terror slogans such as "this does not represent us" and "no place for Qaeda within us."

Snapshots posted on Twitter show a similar solidarity demonstration taking place in Tripoli.

Libya's interim leader Mohammed Magarief said in a statement today that both the National Congress and the transitional government "condemn the criminal aggression," and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Romney didn't just "shoot first and aim later" on this particular occasion — he "seems to have a tendency" to do so, Obama says. "As president, one of the things I've learned is you can't do that."

tbf Obama's more of a "shoot first, don't ask questions" kinda guy

stop swearing and start windmilling (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 23:08 (thirteen years ago)

shoot first, classify internal discussions in which questions may or may not have been raised

j., Wednesday, 12 September 2012 23:17 (thirteen years ago)

xp re the libyan anti-terror demonstrations: honestly the first thing about this whole mess that makes me feel good about the state of the world + humanity.

Norm Coleman (Romney's foreign policy adviser for some reason?) is on CNN sticking to their guns on the apology bullshit. Also his teeth are terrifying in HD

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 23:54 (thirteen years ago)

That's what's so baffling to me because everyone I have met from Minnesota has been awesome. How did y'all end up with so many utter wackjobs?

Interesting that apologizing and sharing are like the top 2 Republican NO-NOs when they are also the lessons you learn the first day of first grade. No wonder they hate education.

that sorta implies a lack of deliberation. always got the sense that his deliberative process was extremely opaque, rather than non-existent. i guess that's a permissible inference tho. fwiw he doesn't seem rash tho.

Nakoula, who talked guardedly about his role, pleaded no contest in 2010 to federal bank fraud charges in California and was ordered to pay more than $790,000 in restitution. He was also sentenced to 21 months in federal prison and ordered not to use computers or the Internet for five years without approval from his probation officer.

The Youtube account, "Sam Bacile," which was used to publish excerpts of the provocative movie in July, was used to post comments online as recently as Tuesday, including this defense of the film written in Arabic: "It is a 100 percent American movie, you cows."

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Leigh Williams said Nakoula set up fraudulent bank accounts using stolen identities and Social Security numbers, then checks from those accounts would be deposited into other bogus accounts from which Nakoula would withdraw money at ATM machines.

It was "basically a check-kiting scheme," the prosecutor told the AP. "You try to get the money out of the bank before the bank realizes they are drawn from a fraudulent account. There basically is no money."

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 September 2012 01:45 (thirteen years ago)

Another actor apparently involved, Tim Dax, addressed the movie on his Facebook page.

“i’m blown away by the news,” Dax wrote. “can hardly believe that i am a part. i feel badly for the lives lost. insane! having said that, it is a movie & hollywood creates controversy always. this in a crazy way will be the hollywood starting line 4 me. great things arise from great moments… even poorly acted ones. ;)”

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 13 September 2012 01:52 (thirteen years ago)

having said that, it is a movie

Matt Armstrong, Thursday, 13 September 2012 01:54 (thirteen years ago)

Here's hoping his next role as "Soft Dong #3" in Backroom Slut Orgies goes well.

Romney is pretty critical of foreign-policy for a guy whose strategy for Asia is turning up "Heat Of The Moment."

Anne Patterson is the current ambassador to Egypt, by the way. She's worked for the State Department since 1973 and had many, many appointments. Was even ambassador to the U.N. for a time under George W. Bush. It's her press officer whose statement Romney decided to criticize.

Pretty amazing record:

Considering they think the ussr is the worlds greatest threat, they seem to know very little about the situation that fighting Syria would get us into with Russia..

Also Kofi Annan has already stepped down, so that's some highly efficient subcontracting.
