Last night, news broke that the Montreal Canadiens might be in violation of the Quebec provincial labour board and that their players might legally not be allowed to be locked out next weekend. Today, defenseman Josh Gorges said that if the players win in this dispute, Canadiens players will be paid while the rest of the League is locked out.

Is this NHL Schadenfreude wrt ESPN? I might be using Schadenfreude wrong in this instance but I feel like there's a german word for this...

ESPN fuckin 3, the bane of people who like some outlying sports stuff and want to watch it on fucking TV

I actually kind of like espn3, my computer monitor has a better picture than my tv anyway.

Might try to remember to watch Datsyuk play, he's with CSKA now iirc.

--bob marley (lag∞n), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 14:44 (thirteen years ago)

also it's gonna be a hellish two seasons out in nassau til the lease runs out

When's the last time they got this many people

One Way Ticket on the 1277 Express (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 15:38 (thirteen years ago)

according to wiki it holds 14,500 for hockey, making it easily the smallest building in the league.

oh, being in nassau county was never a great idea, but it's also hard to separate their attendance problems from the fact that they've played in four playoff series in the last 20 years and lost them all.

playing in a half-assed building with no seats at one end doesn't seem as promising as playing in hartford or quebec or seattle or toronto, that's all. i wouldn't recommend kansas city, but they already have an arena and would probably give the league a great deal.

dansplaining (dan m), Friday, 2 November 2012 18:05 (thirteen years ago)

at this point, I'm just gonna assume that the season is cancelled and maybe in the future I'm going to be pleasantly surprised when they announce that there's going to be a 15 game regular season + playoffs.

like most people, I only watch hockey in the playoffs anyway

silverfish, Friday, 2 November 2012 18:21 (thirteen years ago)

15-game season would be super-intense

Inconceivable (to the entire world) (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 2 November 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)

I would be v cool with a single table season where every club played each other once, home & away.

dansplaining (dan m), Friday, 2 November 2012 18:41 (thirteen years ago)

would also accept a 30 team world cup style tournament

I need to see Girardi, Nash and Kreider lay on the ice to create an invincile shot blocking triple wall after the Rangers spent a good 4 minutes in their own end.

There is a strange dichotomy in NHL ownership. The owners, whether as companies or individuals, are extremely wealthy. Yet many teams reportedly lose money every year, and with few exceptions even the profitable clubs don’t make that much money. Why would phenomenally successful men sink money into a black hole like that? Is it simply a case of viewing hockey teams as luxuries where they can afford to bleed red a little?

While non-financial considerations undoubtedly come into play, the simplest explanation is that the financial picture for various NHL teams is a lot healthier than it is typically reported to be.

http://blogs.edmontonjournal.com/2012/11/16/nhl-lockout-why-do-billionaires-keep-buying-teams-that-lose-money/

Some shell game shit going on here imo.

dansplaining (dan m), Monday, 19 November 2012 16:45 (thirteen years ago)

bill simmons takes time out of his busy schedule of nba/pr0n/80s movies-watching to shit on gary bettman. he narrowly avoids saying 'can we make this happen?'

sounds like the hardline clubs are those in non-hockey markets like nashville/tampa/columbus that need extra concessions from the players to survive. philly daily news reported that flyers owner ed snider is getting fed up and wants to play, although the league has denied any dissension in the ranks.
