i mean it pisses everyone off to be corrected, but that doesnt mean no one ever changes their mind

As society has polarized further and the consensus of the middle has disappeared, news articles lost their force of speaking for 'the majority'. Now it is OK to elevate your own counterfactual opinion over a factual news article, bcz your worldview says the press is the enemy and speaks for a despised minority. Thx, Spiro Agnew.

Aimless, Monday, 10 September 2012 16:56 (thirteen years ago)

sure the media has lost some credibility, but is always been ok to elevate you own counterfactual opinion, free country

A week and a half after Oscar-winner Clint Eastwood‘s appearance at the Republican National Convention, Mitt Romney finally admitted he enjoyed the spectacle. “I was laughing at Clint Eastwood. Look, to have him get up and speak on my behalf was a great thrill,”

I agree with his first sentence.

A roundup of DNC reactions. John Heilemann's remarks especially good reading.

Since he's laughing at an imaginary person telling him to go eff himself I suggest he work that into every major speech.

Obama Outraises Mitt Romney In August With $114M

this seems like it ought to be a fairly big 'thank fuck' moment

thomp, Monday, 10 September 2012 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

a whole four million dollars more in one month!

goole, Monday, 10 September 2012 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

after two months of being down thirty million/month or so that's a pretty good result! this matters! i don't know. i read plouffe's book the other week, it's interesting how open he is about how important it was to winning the election that they could have a lot more money -- tho in his version of the narrative a large part of this is how (due to mccain taking federal funding) the RNC is unable to communicate with mccain's people and so in terms of message they're a shitshow. on the other hand, they seem to be replicating &/or outdoing this without the same restriction this time round so who knows

thomp, Monday, 10 September 2012 18:25 (thirteen years ago)

Nearly $130,000 a day!

Darren Robocopsky (Phil D.), Monday, 10 September 2012 18:25 (thirteen years ago)

you know these dudes who've ploughed, like, $10s of millions into the Romney machine... like, how bummed are they gonna be if they still can't buy the election, and Obama wins? I sort of feel the whole superpac/corporations are people, friend dealy might only benefit advertising media in the long run.

Trad., Arrrgh (stevie), Monday, 10 September 2012 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

its like QE for television companies!!

Trad., Arrrgh (stevie), Monday, 10 September 2012 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

Major downside of an Obama win would be an argument that, "See, Citizens United doesn't matter! They tried to buy an election and failed!"

(Not that Obama's not getting tons of superpac cash himself.)

Carroll, one of the more optimistic conservative bloggers Monday morning, suggests Romney could be saved by showing "he is a human, likeable and competent guy" in the debates

THAT WILL PROBABLY HAPPEN

lag∞n, Monday, 10 September 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

haha that was my first draft but I figured it was too close to "The Help"

I realize whatever that is is probably a poorly kept secret at this point, but I haven't seen it yet! ;_;

Johnny Fever, Monday, 10 September 2012 19:00 (thirteen years ago)

by showing "he is a human, likeable and competent guy" in the debates

he has had several years to do this and has come up short.

GREETINGS EARTHLINGS I AM HUMAN

lag∞n, Monday, 10 September 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

wait i thought DJP was joking

Mr. Que, Monday, 10 September 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

that scene is as dumb as the rest of the movie tho.

"Governer Romney, the first question is for you: what is the output of '10 PRINT "HELLO" 20 GOTO 10'?"

xp: don't worry JF, that reference won't ruin the movie

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Monday, 10 September 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

there's no way a movie like that involves poop eating, maybe he got it confused with Bridesmaids?

Mr. Que, Monday, 10 September 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

lag∞n, Monday, 10 September 2012 19:10 (thirteen years ago)

I think Romney's debating ability is being underestimated. He's got a lot of experience, and as long as he stays on track (off-the-cuff remarks or curveball questions at a town hall might be his downfall) he'll do pretty good. Obama's got a record to defend, and debates are generally about cheap shots and soundbites than long explanations of the reality.

Legendary General Cypher Raige (Gukbe), Monday, 10 September 2012 19:24 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah I feel like the debates are always built up by both sides into these "Now we'll see..." moments, and they're mostly usually not very interesting.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Monday, 10 September 2012 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

Plus, how much does it matter anyway? Kerry gave Bush at least one real solid ass-kicking, and I don't think it had any particular effect.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Monday, 10 September 2012 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.

every time romney offers a position, obama should remind folks of the 18 other positions he's held on the same topic over the past few months. this is already a "thing" w/ romney and i don't think it would be a bad idea to make it the central fact about him.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Monday, 10 September 2012 19:28 (thirteen years ago)

I love how Bush's expression after Kerry starts writing things down while Bush talks ("Shit. I better try that too.")

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 10 September 2012 19:30 (thirteen years ago)

in the nyer article about bubba and obama, there's a bit where clinton suggests that it's better to paint romney as a psycho right winger than to portray him as a 'flip-flopper' (hate that phrase) because undecided voters might think that romney could return to his moderate roots once he was in office.

mookieproof, Monday, 10 September 2012 19:35 (thirteen years ago)

ah, i see.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Monday, 10 September 2012 19:35 (thirteen years ago)

this is why i'm not bill clinton (among other reasons).

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Monday, 10 September 2012 19:36 (thirteen years ago)

expectations on the debates for romney will be very high, it will be a boring draw, race won't change

goole, Monday, 10 September 2012 19:36 (thirteen years ago)

conservative belief is that obama is pretty dumb and an empty suit; if you get someone to just stick it to him live he'll collapse, mitt romney somehow won't do that, blame and recrimination all around.
