More on the Biden pic:

When Biden entered the diner, he approached three diners seated at a counter and asked if he they'd lend him one of their motorcycles, according to the pool report.

"Can I borrow one of your bikes? They don't let me ride anymore," Biden said.

"Probably not," Jeff Cook, one of the diners, said.

The vice president responded laughing, "Probably not."

Then added, "How 'bout one of your women? Heh heh!"

From the Ezra piece:

What’s more, correcting peoples’ factual misunderstandings doesn’t seem to help at all. Brendan Nyhan of Dartmouth and Jason Reifler of Georgia State ran experiments measuring whether partisans who read news articles with correct information that ran against their ideological views were likelier to hold the right factual beliefs. They found the opposite effect — correcting people, in other words, doesn’t inform them, it creates a backlash.

Fiendish Doctor Wu (kingfish), Monday, 10 September 2012 16:49 (thirteen years ago)

i wonder what the effect of repeated exposure to facts over time would be tho

lag∞n, Monday, 10 September 2012 16:50 (thirteen years ago)

i mean it pisses everyone off to be corrected, but that doesnt mean no one ever changes their mind

lag∞n, Monday, 10 September 2012 16:52 (thirteen years ago)

As society has polarized further and the consensus of the middle has disappeared, news articles lost their force of speaking for 'the majority'. Now it is OK to elevate your own counterfactual opinion over a factual news article, bcz your worldview says the press is the enemy and speaks for a despised minority. Thx, Spiro Agnew.

Aimless, Monday, 10 September 2012 16:56 (thirteen years ago)

sure the media has lost some credibility, but is always been ok to elevate you own counterfactual opinion, free country

A week and a half after Oscar-winner Clint Eastwood‘s appearance at the Republican National Convention, Mitt Romney finally admitted he enjoyed the spectacle. “I was laughing at Clint Eastwood. Look, to have him get up and speak on my behalf was a great thrill,”

I agree with his first sentence.

A roundup of DNC reactions. John Heilemann's remarks especially good reading.

Since he's laughing at an imaginary person telling him to go eff himself I suggest he work that into every major speech.

Obama Outraises Mitt Romney In August With $114M

this seems like it ought to be a fairly big 'thank fuck' moment

thomp, Monday, 10 September 2012 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

a whole four million dollars more in one month!

goole, Monday, 10 September 2012 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

after two months of being down thirty million/month or so that's a pretty good result! this matters! i don't know. i read plouffe's book the other week, it's interesting how open he is about how important it was to winning the election that they could have a lot more money -- tho in his version of the narrative a large part of this is how (due to mccain taking federal funding) the RNC is unable to communicate with mccain's people and so in terms of message they're a shitshow. on the other hand, they seem to be replicating &/or outdoing this without the same restriction this time round so who knows

thomp, Monday, 10 September 2012 18:25 (thirteen years ago)

Nearly $130,000 a day!

Darren Robocopsky (Phil D.), Monday, 10 September 2012 18:25 (thirteen years ago)

you know these dudes who've ploughed, like, $10s of millions into the Romney machine... like, how bummed are they gonna be if they still can't buy the election, and Obama wins? I sort of feel the whole superpac/corporations are people, friend dealy might only benefit advertising media in the long run.

Trad., Arrrgh (stevie), Monday, 10 September 2012 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

its like QE for television companies!!

Trad., Arrrgh (stevie), Monday, 10 September 2012 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

Major downside of an Obama win would be an argument that, "See, Citizens United doesn't matter! They tried to buy an election and failed!"

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Monday, 10 September 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)

(Not that Obama's not getting tons of superpac cash himself.)

Carroll, one of the more optimistic conservative bloggers Monday morning, suggests Romney could be saved by showing "he is a human, likeable and competent guy" in the debates

THAT WILL PROBABLY HAPPEN

haha that was my first draft but I figured it was too close to "The Help"

I realize whatever that is is probably a poorly kept secret at this point, but I haven't seen it yet! ;_;

by showing "he is a human, likeable and competent guy" in the debates

he has had several years to do this and has come up short.
