My four year old is doing the 'play it again' thing with the film, so we got him the CD soundtrack for car trips. Have to confess I never knew the title or the (muffled on the soundtrack) line is "As Coroner I Must Aver..."
Heart/Brian/Nerve is an alltime trifecta.

Kind of a ridic unfair poll as one of the songs is arguably the pinnacle of material, performance, and star in the history of the Hollywood musical. Ten minutes in, too.
Among the comic ones, I love the Yip Harburg rhymes for the 3 clowns' theme songs, but Bert Lahr's "If I Were King Of The Forest" is a tour de farce. I've seen a bunch of his starring short films from the '30s, and nearly all the little fillips he throws into his Lion character -- "HUNHHH?," "Ain't it the truth?," the labored sobbing -- were part of his established comic repertoire.

Voted for "If I Were King Of The Forest", but it wasn't easy. Really can't deny that "Over the Rainbow" is beyond all-time, but I went with my childhood favorite.

Like I know you're all sick of it but the reason it's so over-performed is because it's an amazingly written song

If I Were King of The Forest is all time, those rhymes still crack me up
If I were King of the ForestNot queen, not duke, not prince. My regal robes of the forestWould be satin, not cotton, not chintz.I'd command each thingbe it fish or fowlWith a woof and a woof and a royal growl - woof.As I'd click my heelall the trees would kneel. And the mountains bow and the bulls kowtow. And the sparrow would take wing- If I - If I - were King! Each rabbit would show respect to meThe chipmunks genuflect to meThough my tail would lashI would show compashFor every underling! If I - If I - were King!
And of course that exchangeWHAT MAKES THE HOTTENTOTS SO HOTWHAT PUTS THE APE IN APRICOTWHATTA THEY GOT THAT I AIN'T GOTCOURAGEYOU CAN SAY THAT AGAIN
The chipmunks genuflect to me is the best. Bert Lahr's delivery always always gives me the giggles

I'm not sick of it - I play it & "Brain"/"Heart"/"Noive" on guitar several times a week during songtime with aero jr.! This is what kinda woke me up to the genius of "Brain" - that bridge is really sneakily clever and its pathos is very understated ("perhaps I'd deserve you/and be even worth erv you").
― we don't wanna miss a THING!!! (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 13 September 2012 02:54 (thirteen years ago)
! you're right - the one that made the film is "I would dance and be merry/life would be a ding-a-derry" which is imo not in the same class at all

Nothing greater than singing Oz songs w/a little kid.My friend's daughter would ask to sing Rainbow with me before she could hardly say any words. It was me singing and holding her and her humming along and saying rainbow rainbow rainbow. I think this is the #1 experience that convinced me I might want to be a mom some day! Maybe I'd have a little girl with a crush on the Tin Man just like she does. Or a little boy with one.
― ms fotheringham (Crabbits), Thursday, 13 September 2012 03:34 (thirteen years ago)
Rainbow just makes me wistful. I was always convinced as a little girl if I sang it beautifully enough – I'd get whisked away to Oz, too. Which never happened. This is my proof I'm not a good singer btw.
― ms fotheringham (Crabbits), Thursday, 13 September 2012 03:36 (thirteen years ago)

i think the move toward greater and easier access to various media is a definite plus but there is a part of me that thinks it's at least a little bittersweet that the time has passed when if you wanted to see wizard of oz you had to wait for the one time a year it would come on tv and that was yr opp to see it. also everytime i think of wizard of oz i think of this and i laugh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIRN43cVMHI

!!! I wonder if that's the inspiration for the really really wonderful short film that I thought was called "Godot Will Be Here Soon" but Google isn't turning up shit - about a pair of unemployed NYC actors who take a job doing Godot in iirc Tallahassee and nobody shows up and they end up breaking character onstage when they realize the one paid ticket has left
