after a birthday last year where everyone treated my shindig as a predrink for some other party, this year was kind of amazing?

twenty plus people crammed into my apartment to drink for four hours and talk and whatever and then we walked four blocks to a big soca/dancehall/afrobeat party - highlight was either Hold Yuh --> Los Rakas, or the random 2 am appearance of Oliver Twist.

the boy skipped the festivities, but it was actually for the best? he would have been overwhelmed and I would have been worried about him having fun, so I just met him at 2:30 for poutine and cuddles.

my engayged friends were in town from vermont, and slept at our place, so that was fun.

we need an ILX gays house party at some point.

all-night bday blowout ended up as messy and excellent as expected. the boy came, successfully mingled with my friends. we worked through our hangovers at the local crêperie today before i sent him on his way back across london. now i get to stop drinking and maybe start sleeping, i guess my birthday is over. thanks for the bday wishes and happy birthday alex!

i just watched that designing women episode for the first time recently, too. it features the second hiv-positive character on television afaik. i found the episode super depressing though, and not just because the story was sad. it kind of reminded me of this quote from janeane garofalo's character in reality bites: 'It's like I'm watching it on some crappy show like "Melrose Place" or some shit, right? And I'm the new character, I'm the HIV-AIDS character, and I live in the building and I teach everybody that it's OK to be near me, it's OK to talk to me, and then I die. And there's everybody at my funeral wearing halter tops or chokers or some shit like that. '

melrose was a really fun widespread reference for a while there

and that's actually a good one

but in all honesty the designing women episode is not really like that. it's written well. watching dixie carter tell off norma jean or whatever her name was is pretty classic.

btw i'm almost on the last season of melrose place and they recently introduced alyssa milano. who knew girl could act!!

it's true, the designing women episode isn't really like that. it's just sad i guess how the only way they could have a gay hiv-positive character was to also have his funeral at the end of the episode. and that the hiv-positive character is basically just a device for the other characters to respond to, like the episode is about them not him. typical very-special-episode problem, i know
