I thought Walter trying to explain what's going on with him by claiming to have a gambling addiction was, effectively, accurate. I miss Gus! he had style and was so entertaining, like when he's overly, excessively polite to people he completely hates

It seemed like the Chile thing was not thought out at the time and maybe they won't bother going back to it, I can't see what it would add to the show where it is right now - maybe it's better to leave it with, that's likely not his real name and there's no record. but the backstory that I guess they have to fill in is the reason this German conglomerate is involved in the drug trade and connected to Gus' operation and to what extent and how that came about?

i think we're better off not knowing. like you say, how much could that really add to the story at this point to find out how Gus hooked up with Madrigal, built his empire, etc. we know enough about Gus more or less

I was thinking of it more in terms of - hmmm huge drug lord wouldn't kill Gus when he was nobody because he "knew who he was", implying bigger powers-that-be at work, ie, people who might come after Walt for killing Gus.

but I'm just idly speculating, entirely likely/possible/reasonable that this is just a thread left dangling out there

for one thing, it's a little late in the narrative to introduce an even bigger villain, so that's probably not going to happen

I don't think we need to know more about Gus' backstory, best shrouded in mystery. Having said that I would watch a 'Gus rises to power' miniseries.

upstanding ppl of the community who get caught doing crimes have been known to off themselves to avoid public shame, I read his suicide as an old school honor type thing, he seemed more bummed than frightened

I keep meaning to ask a dumb question: do large scale commercial labs like that actually exist? Or is most meth cooked up "Cap'n Cook" style? I know there was that big acid lab in the missle silo or whatever. What was the most impressive known meth lab that got busted?

i read something recently abt the veracity of breaking bad and they said super labs often much larger than the ones depicted in the show exist in mexico but not the usa

there was a massive one in the Central Valley in Cali, and another huge one in Texas (?) that I remember seeing on Frontline. The Cali one was in the middle of huge feedlot farm, kinda like Gus's chicken ranch

but those were shut down like 10 years ago.
