It was just so bland. I can see, just because it's pithy, and because it seizes on one caricature of Obama, the ocean vs. your family line getting some play. Otherwise, nothing.

scott seward, Friday, 31 August 2012 03:30 (thirteen years ago)

"he did what he needed to do," right? the kind of thing you say when you're going to have to play the whole season with a QB who's there to "manage the game" while you go 7-9

they're not bashing him, they're talking about how fucking awful and horrible it was to put that in your last hour of a convention

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 31 August 2012 03:31 (thirteen years ago)

there are lots of republicans in hollywood. you know angelina jolie? well her dad is one.

Mordy, Friday, 31 August 2012 03:31 (thirteen years ago)

I thought for sure Clint would be speaking at like 6pm or something

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 31 August 2012 03:32 (thirteen years ago)

eric roberts, bonnie franklin, i could go on and on.

scott seward, Friday, 31 August 2012 03:33 (thirteen years ago)

I only caught bits of the end of Mitt's speech but Chris Matthews said nobody applauded the line about helping the poor?

scott seward, Friday, 31 August 2012 03:34 (thirteen years ago)

Even Gergen's ridiculing the 12-million-jobs promise. "Excuse me?"

clemenza, Friday, 31 August 2012 03:34 (thirteen years ago)

times must be rly tough for the gop when they can't find an old white rich guy who's actually a republican to fill their guest spot.

tubular, mondo, gnabry (Merdeyeux), Friday, 31 August 2012 03:35 (thirteen years ago)

Don't forget Vincent Gallo.

Hadrian VIII, Friday, 31 August 2012 03:35 (thirteen years ago)

Republicans in Hollywood: Eastwood, Voight, Thompson... Stephen Baldwin... Kirk Cameron... Lisa Welchel

DARING PRINCESS (DJP), Friday, 31 August 2012 03:36 (thirteen years ago)

it's kinda tragic how badly the republicans want celebrities to like them

iatee, Friday, 31 August 2012 03:36 (thirteen years ago)

i'm predicting a historically mediocre convention bump

Mordy, Friday, 31 August 2012 03:37 (thirteen years ago)

half the msnbc panel trying desperately to give Romney some credit the other half just openly laughing at the whole thing

Don't forget John Milius. He's a big name these days.

clemenza, Friday, 31 August 2012 03:38 (thirteen years ago)

Sorry to harp, but the TPM cutline must be intriguing for anyone who missed it: "Clint Eastwood opened up the primetime portion of the Republican convention with a rambling, mumbling and often incoherent address next to an empty chair that was meant to represent President Obama."

clemenza, Friday, 31 August 2012 03:42 (thirteen years ago)

yeah the clint thing is gonna go viral and 'the internet matters' by now

iatee, Friday, 31 August 2012 03:44 (thirteen years ago)

poor gus

mookieproof, Friday, 31 August 2012 03:44 (thirteen years ago)

I followed the last campaign reallllly closely and heard most all the major political/policy speeches Obama has given since being elected, and I have zero, zero recollection of him making any memorable and direct promises about "healing the planet" and whatever.

Seemed so out of left field as an attack, because who remembers Obama having said any such thing or anything even resembling it?

Because if we are willing to work for it, and fight for it, and believe in it, then I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on Earth. This was the moment - this was the time - when we came together to remake this great nation so that it may always reflect our very best selves, and our highest ideals. Thank you, God Bless you, and may God Bless the United States of America.

tellingly if you google the phrase "the oceans began to recede" you only get rightwing shit

goole, Friday, 31 August 2012 03:47 (thirteen years ago)

line about oceans/planets etc

seriously, THIS GUY (daria-g), Friday, 31 August 2012 03:51 (thirteen years ago)

having Clint do that speech was total Michael Steele/CPAC amateurville

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 31 August 2012 03:52 (thirteen years ago)

I agree with what someone posted above, right after Eastwood finished; that the weirdness was grew out of his mixed feelings, not his age. He really wasn't very critical of Obama at all.

feel like Clint's apparently been going to the Oscars for years and only going up onstage to collect awards, all the while wishing it was him and not Billy Crystal up there doing the jokes and wacky skits

some dude, Friday, 31 August 2012 03:56 (thirteen years ago)

madow pointing out that Clint was the first thing network viewers saw, not mitts happy video, not rubio, but a strange old man talking to a chair

a strange old man who's been a huge box office draw since the '60s. i'm giddy to watch the clip but i don't think clint's going to alienate swing voters or anything.

da croupier, Friday, 31 August 2012 03:59 (thirteen years ago)

CNN's "independent" focus group--i.e., Republican-leaning--indifferent about Romney's speech.
