They did indulge in one awful dramatic cliche - one person walking in as another person does somethign that the first person said not to do (Veronica harassing the new girl), but mysteriously they're never able to communicate the Very Good Reason that it happened.

I don't think Wallace walked in per se -- he was just standing in an obscured place. But yeah, V's reaction was like, woh. But hahaha the meta! It really is Veronica Mars's world -- it's named after her!

Wallace dumped whatsherface, right? I already forget.

series REALLY hitting its stride now

c7n (Cozen), Friday, 28 October 2005 19:24 (eighteen years ago) link

I watched the '80s dance/Meg/mobster episode last night - holy shit, so good. I think it took five or six episodes to really get in a groove, but at this point (and including S2), it might be my favorite television show ever.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Friday, 28 October 2005 19:31 (eighteen years ago) link

that was a pretty special episode.

jeffrey (johnson), Saturday, 29 October 2005 00:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Ok, call me dumb, but could somebody explain the last episode's plot to me? Jackie wants to get back at Veronica - I get that. So, what - she lies about having her credit card stolen, and buys some candles that she saw at the fortune teller's? Is her friend with the new jacket in on it too? How did the fortune teller find out about that MammoMax thing - I mean, obviously "from Jackie," but she's getting her psychic info from that audience plant, did Jackie just go up to the plant and say "hey, here's some info about someone who's going to be on the show, you should use it"? Was the fortune teller in on the thing too?

The Yellow Kid, Saturday, 29 October 2005 04:26 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, the fortune teller lifted the credit card number in order to buy lots of candles, it seems.. but what about the jacket and the bag..?

ok, i don't really follow this show, clearly, but i like it, and i'd like someone to explain how veronica is so out of it.. i.e. the psychic show - "everyone at neptune high watches it!" - but veronica's unaware of its existence??

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 29 October 2005 18:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Jackie bought stuff that Cora and the fortune teller had also bought from the same places they bought them (she's friends with Cora and would have heard from her about shopping trips: where and what, I'm not so sure about the candles but she probably found out the same way Veronica did or maybe bought them herself as a present for the psychic), then lead Veronica to think they were the two possible suspects and let her work out that they owned things bought from the same place that someone had used Jackie's credit card. The psychic is usually getting her info from the plant, but in this case Jackie is friends with her and told her about the breast cream aswell. The whole of Neptune knows about Veronica being friends with Lily, so that bit could have come from anywhere. Veronica being unaware of the whole programme was a bit silly though.

The whole thing was a set up from Jackie, but it didn't seem well planned if the whole point was to let the world know that Veronica used breast cream, that was something that Veronica told her quite late on. It seems a bit weird to plan something so meticulously yet have the whole thing rely on a piece of embarrassing information that you may never get. It wasn't brilliantly written.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Saturday, 29 October 2005 19:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't think the psychic's lily message was part of the set-up

c7n (Cozen), Saturday, 29 October 2005 20:02 (eighteen years ago) link

That probably wasn't very clear - the psychic has a show and usually uses the plant to get info from guests. The psychic may have been in on the revenge thing, or she may have had Jackie tell her that she knows someone who's coming on as a guest and "accidentally" dropped some info into the conversation, and the psychic uses any information she can get her hands on.

xpost No it wasn't, I'm starting to think she wasn't actually in on it, as there would be no point in trying to amaze Veronica with knowledge about Lily as she'd know Veronica would work out it was a set up by the end. Maybe Jackie claimed she had known Lily and Lily had told her about the cream, as it was "Lily" who mentioned the cream when the psychic talked to Veronica.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Saturday, 29 October 2005 20:06 (eighteen years ago) link

also: wallace can't sing for shit!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 29 October 2005 20:29 (eighteen years ago) link

The idea may have been that Jackie needed a reason to get closer to Veronica so she could dig up some dirt.

The intricacies of the weekly mystery never seem to fit together perfectly, but they're usually not so noticeable (as in this week, I get the point even if it's not completely sensible).

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Saturday, 29 October 2005 20:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Right, I think that's a good way of putting it - I get the story they're trying to tell, even though the details of it seem off. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing some obvious plot point.

It did seem weird that all of Neptune watches this show, though. Logan and Duncan stop what they're doing to watch a cable-access psychic show? And I know Veronica's not part of the "in" crowd, but she is dating Duncan, you'd think she'd know about it.

The Yellow Kid, Sunday, 30 October 2005 16:03 (eighteen years ago) link

I think duncan and logan only watched it because they knew veronica was going to be on

c7n (Cozen), Sunday, 30 October 2005 16:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Is it a rerun of the premiere tomorrow night?

Leeeeeeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 04:22 (eighteen years ago) link

i can't can't can't stand the awful awful musical underscoring in this show; it comes mighty close to ruining the whole thing for me (although this is a complaint i have about every television show, to be fair, and many movies)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 04:46 (eighteen years ago) link

I hope there's a show this week.

jeffrey (johnson), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 14:55 (eighteen years ago) link

According to Tvtome there is.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 16:29 (eighteen years ago) link

with a guest spot from Joss Whedon, even.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 9 November 2005 18:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Needs more Wallace. (ie some Wallace at all)

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Thursday, 10 November 2005 04:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Agreed, Wallace is fantastic.

Kristen Bell is on the Jimmy Kimmel show tonight.

But maybe he can explain the ending of last night's show to me.

mallard fillmore makes a goddamn snail darter joke; god save us all

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 17 November 2005 20:44 (eighteen years ago) link

snail darter, a small, rare fish, Percina tanasi, discovered by a zoologist who was snorkeling in the Little Tennessee River upstream from the projected Tellico Dam. Dam opponents, including Native American tribes who would see their burial grounds flooded, fought successfully to include the darter on the Endangered Species List in 1975 (see endangered species), and the dam was halted. In 1978, the Supreme Court sided with environmentalists, but Congress declared the fish nonendangered and the Tellico was built. Snail darters are classified in the phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, class Osteichthyes, order Percomorphi, family Percidae.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 17 November 2005 20:58 (eighteen years ago) link

That was the most surreal thing I've seen on TV since Twin Peaks.

Sonneywolferinecastleee (Leee), Saturday, 19 November 2005 07:27 (eighteen years ago) link

I didn't like the ending, though. The sheriff is just going to watch the house, and not actually going to do anything to the parents?

Lars and Jagger (Ex Leon), Saturday, 19 November 2005 14:25 (eighteen years ago) link

they had me with Rodney being the kid, but the Grace revelation blew me away. veronica getting her eyes covered by the mayor's daughter was a nice touch too.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Saturday, 19 November 2005 16:34 (eighteen years ago) link

This one must set a record for most drawn-out opening title sequence in television history for a one-hour show. My VLC player says the last one comes twelve minutes in!

Best Veronica Mars in ages, btw, maybe ever?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 21 November 2005 05:18 (eighteen years ago) link

It seemed out of place - like it should have been two or three episodes ago. Very good, of course, but strange that it referred back to events that have been completely ignored for a couple of weeks and set up new plots that probably won't be referred to again.

Steve Guttenberg is still terrible, but I imagine the fight over his new richie-city vs. poor-county plan is going to be entertaining. Will Keith bite the hand that fed him, or will he sign on to police the city?

Steve Guttenberg terrifies me in this show. His neck is distracting.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 21 November 2005 05:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Only thing wrong with latest ep = irresistible tessa thompson and cool-as-cucumber francis capra both m.i.a. (i don't mind wallace being gone, actually, he bugs me for some reason. it was probably just his atrocious singing that time he met his dad in the supermarket.)

does anybody else think it's weird that veronica is basically dating an asshole, who we are asked to root for no less?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 21 November 2005 17:33 (eighteen years ago) link

oh francis!!

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 21 November 2005 19:21 (eighteen years ago) link

That was a pretty special episode there, i think.

He is! He really scares me.

Lars and Jagger (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 02:05 (eighteen years ago) link

well, they kinda teased the charisma carpenter/duncan thing, but it's hard to get a read off anything from that last episode. but yeah even that, he's just a jock and not that particularly sensitive, funny or bright. she *was* an 09er, i guess.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 03:08 (eighteen years ago) link

The friendship between Veronica and Wallace didn't seem as well-written through the end of last year and into this one. With Duncan and Logan in the picture, he pops up more as a plot device, less as her confidant/best friend.

Tessa is/was a terrible actress.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 03:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Maybe that's because, essentially, the show is filtered through V's eyes, and her eyes failed to see Gromit as more than a means to an end only towards the end of the season when OMG WE ARE BFF!

Americans would never be so pretentious as to poorly ape the Spanish pronunciation in some desperate bid for sophistication.

Isn't the local name Eivissa (eye-vee-sa)? Ibeeza is a lot closer than Ibbeetha.

I watched all of S1 this past weekend and JESUS CHRIST I AM STUPID FOR MISSING THIS LAST YEAR. I want to personally thank Mel and all other like-minded soulds for bugging enough people to watch this that it got a second season; I won't let you down again, I promise!

p.s. Who gives a shit about Lost? My problem with the Wednesday 9 p.m. timeslot is that it falls at the same time as MythBusters!

Alternate ending of the last episode.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 2 December 2005 06:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Booo, the alternate ending is kind of lame.

I'm willing to bet the kid isn't Duncan's - it's too easy, the parallels between Duncan/Veronica and Jake/Lianne and everything. They're setting it up so that Duncan looks like a dick, but comes out clean in the end.
