DON'T EVER TOUCH ANY SIGN I PUT UP ON AN ELEPHANT(THAT BELONGS TO ME)!!

it was a dark and stormy night. i was nearly blind in the darkness. i could only feel and see part of the elephant...the part that said "don't think of an elephant"...i wandered off into the forest and totally forgot about it, until now

Dear Abbott,
You still going to be in Tuscon October 6th and 7th? If so and if my friend and I were to drive up there (down there?) from Tempe, would you like to meet us for coffee/lunch/city exploring what have you?
Love,
Erica

Hey E!Down there, yes! I will very much be here. The first week of October is vacay from work so I would love to end it with some Erica (and friend) time. So so stoked!
― The Most Typical and Popular Girl Rider (Crabbits), Thursday, 20 September 2012 00:17 (thirteen years ago)
Awesome! I should know in the next couple days if we'll definitely be able to drive down but I think it's likely. You will like my friend Kate, btw. She's prettty much the nicest kindest person I've ever known and she's also an AZ public school teacher! :D
― (✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Thursday, 20 September 2012 01:36 (thirteen years ago)
Will email you when I know more.
Kates are generally pretty awesome people, it's true.

What is a "Georgia Tuck"?
Considering a tat....what should I get?
― how's life, Sunday, 30 September 2012 21:01 (thirteen years ago)
that style of bowtie?
― clouds, Sunday, 30 September 2012 21:17 (thirteen years ago)
Georgia tuck is when the ONLY part of your shirt you tuck in is the part behind your belt buckle. The rest hangs out over your belt.
― The Most Typical and Popular Girl Rider (Crabbits), Monday, 1 October 2012 00:17 (thirteen years ago)
I inherited a Freedom Arms belt buckle from my still-living Dad, of the .454 Casull – "the world's most powerful handgun." And I'll so the Georgia tuck with that belt buckle since there's really no other choice. Guns are awful and do nothing but inhale people's lives. I should really quit it but it reminds me of when I was six and lived in beautiful Star Valley. All I was doing was trying to sing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" as beautifully as possible to whisk myself off to Oz/ Guess who just had a few vodka tonics. I should probably retire that belt buckle.
― The Most Typical and Popular Girl Rider (Crabbits), Monday, 1 October 2012 00:21 (thirteen years ago)
Wow, weirdly, wikipedia has a picture of the belt bucklehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:FreedomArms.jpgMy dad would bring us home blue foam rubber punchouts shaped like guns – the donut hole of the packaging depicted in this photo

Why is it still so hot in AZ? I was sort of banking on it being cooler there in October ffs. Hmpf.
Anyway, I look forward to making your acquaintance later this week and will message you under separate cover with my contact details so that we might make actual plans to meet up.
Hurrah and all that sort of thing.
Yours,
ENBB

Hey!! Still stoked. There are always a few days in October that will trick you into thinking its cool but I have to remind myself: it is going to be hot as shit until after Halloween. It's cool in the morning and evening now, though!

Abbott-
have you taken a stroll/drive/hayride through Winterhaven yet?
― ❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 16:08 (thirteen years ago)
Froks,Duly noted!
gr80ster,When I first moved to Tucson, I lived opposite (E of) Winterhaven on Country Club – I think there is a thing when you live so close to some attraction, it makes you never want to see it. It made me a Grinch with the traffic and whatnot, esp. as a pedestrian only at the time. It also seemed, from just peeking in via Ft. Lowell, that it was not so hot compared to my hometown's stilly xmas light neighborhood, Candy Cane Lane (which did not offer hayrides). I am guessing Winterhaven is fun with some friends and a flask.

dear abbott i heard a rumor that you have a good reading list on mao. is this true? would you share it with me?
― Mordy, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 19:19 (thirteen years ago)
I read a lot of Maoist struggle memoirs in my day, and a whole bunch of books on Mao –– basically everything in my hometown library (NB: this is not a big brag) ––– but this was literally half of my life ago. All the titles have slipped through the memory cracks except THE OBVIOUS ONES eg Life and Death in Shanghai. I was reading some teaching guide for Red Scarf Girl and it pointed out most of the Cultural Revolution memoirs we have in English are from detractors and obv won't paint it positively. I mean that sounds dumb and obvious but you gotta consider it's one voice of one person. I mean, you know that.
Oh, typing this ––– I recall one of my favorite graphic novels of last year, A Chinese Life by Philippe Otie and Li Kunwu. You gotta read it! The art is amazing and the memoir bridges 1949-modern capitalism.
Anyway here's some Cultural Revolution list, a list, not compiled by me because the rumors aren't true: http://www.morningsun.org/library/index.html
Here's a four-hour docu I watched over xmas break (also rec'ced by that teaching guide, v informative) China: A Century of Revolution [1911 -1949] Part 1 pt 2
Hope you weren't looking for a bunch of Mao/Nixon slashfic or something because I don't know where that is!<3 running dog of crabbitalism

thanks! this exactly what i was hoping for!
― Mordy, Thursday, 17 January 2013 03:51 (thirteen years ago)
abbott, it is crazy how the interview subjects in this documentary recount the most horrific things and then start giggling!
― Mordy, Saturday, 19 January 2013 13:42 (thirteen years ago)
the graphic novel is great btw -- thanks again for the recommendation
unrelated: if i started a comic strip poll, would u participate?

Mordy, If you mean send in a comics ballot, then, sure ––– but you have to realize the results would be biased because T.K. Ryan has some compromising photos of me.
― I wish every slot machine had EAT THE RICH printed on it (Crabbits), Monday, 21 January 2013 15:42 (thirteen years ago)
yes to ballot but also you have to chat too!

do you foresee a moment in the future when you may have the time? i honestly would love to run that kind of poll, but it wouldn't be worth it if you didn't comment

My wife went to a big party of elderly cartoonists at Bunny Hoest's estate on long island (Bunny has boldly carried on the Lockhorns/Howard Huge legacy after Bill's death). There are some great stories from that party.

The 'Bunny Bash' gets held every year, maybe I'll get to go to the next one. When Karen went it was on like a Thursday afternoon and I didn't want to use a day off for it, which in hindsight was v dumb of me.

I would be very disappointed if a party like that have nine-foot tall blondes in its attendance.
