that nicetrybro tumblr really exemplifies one of the things that bothers me about bro fashion or w/e: this obsession with universal fashion RULES like your tie must be a certain length or your blazer must have this many buttons. these rules might once have had something to do with what "looked good" or fit "well" or something but as applied by a lot of these dudes they're basically meaningless conventions/shibboleths. feel like this is also connected to like, denim fetishization. something abt trying to remake fashion as a more "masculine" hobby/interest...?

my brother has developed a scholarly & light-hearted interest in suits/formal wear probably to distract himself from his job, & his line is that a lot of these ludicrous standards e.g. tie knots &c. are derived straight from the royals (at least in england). there is definitely an appeal for some guys that they are buying into a tradition w/ firm, esoteric rules & a glacial rate of change. it does seem peculiarly anti-aesthetics

or that if you have a fancy tumblr about pretty pictures of men in pretty clothes you have to justify the whole exercise by being a fascist hardman about it

xp my brother's wardrobe is a startling synthesis of those poles, w/ 50% really nice suits & 50% lounge pants + star wars tshirts

Yeah this was kind of my reaction too. I mean some of the stuff he picks on really does sort of seem like hideous failures, but when dude is like "Yo brah those lapels are way too narrow" it's kind of like "Yeah no shit, that's a strikingly narrow-lapeled suit, I think that's probably what the suit is going for."

And also the smattering of "lol @ this homo" type comments don't help his cause.

yeah i mean -- i can understand thinking that most dudes lack a sense of style. honestly, i think you can actually take a compassionate stance on that: most dudes are discouraged from having any sort of aesthetic pursuits and sensitivities growing up & through adulthood, esp in america. gender anxieties can be awful in the way people act them out, but the anxiety is real! so many men are so sad and wounded and confused and they can't handle those feelings! it's a cycle of emotional violence! ahh!

i just think there is a way for men to encourage each other to dress better that doesn't rely on sniping on details like cuff length and tie dimples, or going 100% by the book, but it involves being making mistakes and developing a taste for color and generally being a little more ~vulnerable~ so it's a hard road for a lot of guys, especially if they don't have money & resources. there are menswear bloggers who are 100x more supportive and generous with advice, btw, but they tend to be a bit repetitive in that advice, ime.

the frat house alpha dog shit... well, it's the predictable way out, is all i can say. when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail, etc etc
