it's called "graduate school" dude
― i fuck mathematics, Sunday, 25 January 2009 12:55 (seventeen years ago)
yeah so people aren't so into foucault but i feel him you know? of his time
― matt p (Matt P), Sunday, 25 January 2009 12:57 (seventeen years ago)
how often in "graduate school" do you meet people who seriously challenge you about lacan/freud/zizek (a hillaaarious stretch of everything btw) so you have to stan lacan/freud/zizek (again LOL).
― matt p (Matt P), Sunday, 25 January 2009 12:59 (seventeen years ago)
lacan/zizek/foucault is a tool, but tbh a lot of ign'ant humanities postgrads still rep for him; im surprised you'd need to leap to his defence.
― special guest stars mark bronson, Sunday, 25 January 2009 12:59 (seventeen years ago)
Actually, I would say Lacan would be the epitome of academic stanservice -- loveable in a lot of ways but quite easily attackable, hence need for overdefensiveness.
― i fuck mathematics, Sunday, 25 January 2009 13:01 (seventeen years ago)
they might say: 'the notion of the episteme doesn't stand up to scrutiny' or 'this guy is a creepy totalitarian' or 'lol no-one takes lacan seriously in his field so why is this even a thing with you crazy english grads?'
― special guest stars mark bronson, Sunday, 25 January 2009 13:01 (seventeen years ago)
i mean jodorowski i can understand, because i hate him.
but the boredoms, that's critical acclaim in the places that matter to you the most. how do you 'stan' the boredoms when no one else cares as much as you do? by 'you' i mean 'i.'
x-post ok fair enough i've never had a conversation about jacques lacan with a person and from the sound of it that would drive me crazy.
― matt p (Matt P), Sunday, 25 January 2009 13:03 (seventeen years ago)
i would hit freud/lacan/zizek
― matt p (Matt P), Sunday, 25 January 2009 13:04 (seventeen years ago)
i've never had a conversation about jacques lacan with a person and from the sound of it that would drive me crazy
there is literally no point in having this conversation. you may as well debate a scientologist because it is a completely closed system. the answer will always come out the same when the lacan script is run.

― matt p (Matt P), Sunday, 25 January 2009 13:11 (seventeen years ago)
but seriously these people are awesome to read and think about but not take literally and debate and stan???
― matt p (Matt P), Sunday, 25 January 2009 13:12 (seventeen years ago)
Lacan def. has less fans/more critics in the humanities than, say, Derrida or Deleuze. There's definitely a weird cult-like thing that goes on with a lot of his followers and that can tend to make a stan of anyone who thinks he's worthwhile reading.
As for Boredoms, "critical acclaim" means nothing if you grew up in the suburbs and given a hard time for liking weirdo screamy drum music.
― i fuck mathematics, Sunday, 25 January 2009 13:13 (seventeen years ago)
wow, then where is lacan liked? i thought it was mainly humanities departments.
i hear you on the boredoms, i'm from the same suburbs, but i guess it's not something that i feel like i have to defend. like they're one of my favorite bands ever, they're amazing, but i do not feel the need to educate unless others are interested. i'm reading a low-to-high thing into 'stan' that probably shouldn't be there.

― 8====D ------ ㋡ (max), Sunday, 25 January 2009 13:27 (seventeen years ago)
Well yeah, he's liked by some in humanities departments, but not universally by a long shot, due to the whole supposed sexist occult crypto-totalitarianism thing. But a lot of that has more to do with the way he's treated (creepily cult-like authority figure/possessor of some sort of psychoanlaytic gnosis) than anything else.
BTW, it's not like I shove Boredoms down people's throats or anything, but if I'm in the car with a friend and I'm playing Super AE r something, I def. have to defend it. Actually, even some of my more open-minded indie/alt-liking friends get weirded out by Boredoms.

I don't get the whole "stan" thing....isn't everyone fair game? I'd defend the defenseless, but that's about it.

I'll need to give this some deep thought. There's a few but I'm not sure which are passing fancies and which are genuine standoms.

I'm gonna echo the Stanning of Woody Allen, but older stuff only. I think he's lost his ear for dialogue to such an extent that his newer stuff is painful to watch (Vicky Christina's sole saving grace is Penélope Cruz) but if someone gets caught up in the Soon-Yi creepiness or actually thinks he's just not funny I have to defend the Woodster. Like, I'm annoyed with that line in Mos Def's Mr. Nigga (off Black on Both Sides which, ironically, I'm a stan for) where Mos accuses him of MOLESTING and marrying his stepdaughter and compares it with Michael Jackson's treatment in the media. The whole issue IS quite problematic, but if you don't like Annie Hall I'm not sure you have a soul.I'll also stan for:*The Beatles (although I kind of think everyone who says they weren't great is just being contrarian/reacting to Greatest Band Ever title), but especially the White Album. Should have been one disc?! Fightin words.*The Office (US version)*Nas - Illmatic*Arrested Development*Juvenile comedies like Dumb and Dumber, Half Baked and the work of Judd Apatow*Daft Punk*Don Quijote *Pedro Almodóvar films
