except in a few cases, characters must sing in non-performance scenes (only great exception I can think of is Cabaret)

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 August 2012 16:30 (thirteen years ago)

anyway w/ MGM you can start w/ Meet Me in St Louis, Gigi, An American in Paris, and The Band Wagon.

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 August 2012 16:33 (thirteen years ago)

I've seen all four! We watched invitation to the dance (I think that was the title) during the Astaire block the other day. Very weird & not very good

Mordy, Friday, 24 August 2012 16:34 (thirteen years ago)

isn't that Kelly?

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 August 2012 16:36 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, that's Kelly, and was on yesterday afternoon. I watched the first segment of it and was boggled by Claire Sombert's muscles.

Bobby-fil-A (WmC), Friday, 24 August 2012 16:40 (thirteen years ago)

Yes thx

Mordy, Friday, 24 August 2012 18:14 (thirteen years ago)

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 24 August 2012 18:24 (thirteen years ago)

these films are all equally great you shameless curmudgeons

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 24 August 2012 18:30 (thirteen years ago)

I'm just lashing out bc Singing In The Rain got besmirched, tbh

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 24 August 2012 18:33 (thirteen years ago)

I like all the other suggestions just fine, btw. Gigi is the only one I've no use for.

Eric H., Friday, 24 August 2012 18:35 (thirteen years ago)

Minnelli's great when he's on, but he's not the ONLY awesome musical director out there.

Eric H., Friday, 24 August 2012 18:35 (thirteen years ago)

prefer Hermione Baddeley to Hermione Gingold, eh? xp

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 August 2012 18:37 (thirteen years ago)

well there's also Love Me Tonight for all you Chevalier bashers

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023158/soundtrack

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 August 2012 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

(I believe that's Stephin Merritt's choice for #1 and he's seen plenty)

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 August 2012 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

That's a great movie. Watch it if you haven't seen it.

(I like Hermione Gingold tons in The Music Man.)

Eric H., Friday, 24 August 2012 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

Love Me Tonight's opening rhythms-of-the-city is like '30s Stomp.

Eric H., Friday, 24 August 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

oh, I've seen it.

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 August 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

i think i'd go with The Band Wagon maybe

The muted sensation feels amazeballs. (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 25 August 2012 01:48 (thirteen years ago)

Meet Me in St Louis, Gigi, An American in Paris, and The Band Wagon

I believe there are 4 'stars' of this group of films who are still alive.

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 25 August 2012 02:41 (thirteen years ago)

Mordy, Saturday, 8 September 2012 23:16 (thirteen years ago)

one month passes...

it’s with great honor that I report to you that an hour’s worth of rare silent-era animation from my collection will be airing on Turner Classic Movies, *tonight*, at 12am eastern/9pm pacific. For this very special and long overdue broadcast event, we’ve curated several rare, once-thought-lost, historically significant or just downright funny cartoons produced in New York City between 1907 and 1926. That’s not all, though--TCM host Robert Osborne, with Jerry Beck co-hosting, are also presenting both Fleischer features, a block of UPA cartoons, and The Adventures of Prince Achmed in addition to the early NYC shorts.

It’s not to be missed! I hope some or many of you can tune in or set your DVR in time. Important links pertaining to this event below...

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, which I haven't seen yet, tonight.

WilliamC, Saturday, 17 November 2012 17:44 (thirteen years ago)

Master Of The House on tonight. Silent Dreyer, just like you like it.

"Twinkies" en espanol is still "Twinkies"! No reason to panic. (R Baez), Sunday, 18 November 2012 17:05 (thirteen years ago)

I put my very brief thoughts about Alice into the Scorsese thread this morning.

WilliamC, Sunday, 18 November 2012 17:10 (thirteen years ago)

Hey, The Dardenne's La Promesse on before Killer Of Sheep. Really good/non-case studyish.

two weeks pass...

Star of the month: Stanwyck, some funky early 30s yesterday, sorry I couldn't pull myself away long enough to alert. Today's not her, but survivors of Nuclear War (she shoulda done one of those; imagine being in a suburban fallout shelter w 50s her). Tonight: Crumb one of my fav docs ever, 1:00 a.m. CST, followed by Gaudi, feat Gaudi himself, from 1966.

dow, Friday, 21 December 2012 16:53 (thirteen years ago)

Cool! I guess that'll be the first time the words "did you know he masturbates to his own work" are spoken on TCM. Speaking of Zwigoff, I watched Louie Bluie a few weeks ago and it is really really good.

WilliamC, Friday, 21 December 2012 17:05 (thirteen years ago)

Yes. I'd begun to wonder what it might be like for someone his age in the early 70s, when the more fun aspects of the 60s surfaced and spread through the Deep South (maaan, lemme tell ya). And Louie's ready with an answer or five.

dow, Friday, 21 December 2012 17:55 (thirteen years ago)

Wonder what Crumb and Bluie might have thought, watching each's Zwigoff docs? They had a number of shared interests...

dow, Friday, 21 December 2012 17:58 (thirteen years ago)

yeah my 1st reax seeing bluie is r crumb prob loves this

i think it's friday 1/4 theres some amos poe stuff scheduled i want 2 remember and dvr

johnny crunch, Friday, 21 December 2012 18:05 (thirteen years ago)

if i've never been in to/"got" crumb, would i benefit from seeing this?

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Friday, 21 December 2012 18:26 (thirteen years ago)

Crumb is o_O Bizarrely fascinating even if, like me, you know next to nothing about him. "Benefit" I dunno...

Rocking Disco Santa (Dan Peterson), Friday, 21 December 2012 18:31 (thirteen years ago)

id say probably. im fairly meh on his art, think the doc is stunning
