Oh, I'm taking early nights alright. I'll probably go to bed at 8 tonight since I'm getting up at 4 am to do my 18 miler tomorrow. Should probably cut back on the drinking though. I usually only drink on the nights before rest days, but the effects seem to linger.

4am, oh that's brutal
― mod night at the oasis (NickB), Friday, 24 August 2012 13:07 (thirteen years ago)
It got hot again, so I'm trying to avoid the heat. High of 93 tomorrow. :(((((
― Jeff, Friday, 24 August 2012 13:14 (thirteen years ago)
hot enough to boil yer gels
― mod night at the oasis (NickB), Friday, 24 August 2012 13:27 (thirteen years ago)
Speaking of gels, what does everyone use? Hammer gels are really the only ones I can stomach. GU seems too thick to me.
― Jeff, Friday, 24 August 2012 13:47 (thirteen years ago)
Might just be britishes brands but I used to use vanilla Squeezy until they stopped doing that flavour, so now I use the RHUBARB & CUSTARD(!) or strawberry yogurt flavour Torq gels. They're also a bit thick and they're VERY strongly flavoured, but they're also really delicious...
Tried a chocolate Clif Shot for the first time at about mile 22 of the last Brighton marathon cos they were handing them out and I'd always liked the sound of them. Big mistake, it was like eating a spoonful of very dark chocolate spread - really hard to swallow and made me feel pretty nauseous too.
― mod night at the oasis (NickB), Friday, 24 August 2012 14:01 (thirteen years ago)
Never got the hang of gels myself (possibly a mistake), I'm averse to running with anything but the minimum of gear and my digestive system is very delicate when it comes to racing.
― Cong rat ululations (seandalai), Friday, 24 August 2012 14:18 (thirteen years ago)
i got new balance trail minimus for lifting in because they were on sale on the internet and running shoes are bad for lifting and i did my treadmill warm up in them and it felt amazing. like my heels were naturally not touching the ground and i felt like i was floating. however my calves are very tired!
― horribl ecreature (harbl), Friday, 24 August 2012 21:29 (thirteen years ago)
Were your heels touching at all?
― Jeff, Friday, 24 August 2012 21:31 (thirteen years ago)
they were just barely but i didn't feel it, i was definitely running more on the front of my foot. i am not really a heel striker in regular shoes though. it was like my feet were landing how they normally do but adjusting for having nothing under them.
― horribl ecreature (harbl), Friday, 24 August 2012 21:33 (thirteen years ago)
I see people that look like they are running on their tiptoes sometimes. That would destroy me.
I pretty much land slight heel strike with a quick transition to mid foot. Seems to be working ok.
― Jeff, Friday, 24 August 2012 21:35 (thirteen years ago)
I think it's more important where your foot lands rather than how it lands. More under you than out in front of you.
― Jeff, Friday, 24 August 2012 21:36 (thirteen years ago)
yeah there is a guy i see out sometimes. i think he is from kenya or something. he jumps up so high when he runs and his heels are so far off the ground. it's crazy. it wasn't like that. i just felt like i was having kind of an epiphany like, oh this is running. lol.
― horribl ecreature (harbl), Friday, 24 August 2012 21:36 (thirteen years ago)
however i only run a mile to warm up and i know you are supposed to gradually adjust to these so i will be doing regular running in my regular shoes.
― horribl ecreature (harbl), Friday, 24 August 2012 21:37 (thirteen years ago)
18 miles done. The heat is such a game changer for me. Definitely have to adjust my goals based on what the game day temp is.
― Jeff, Saturday, 25 August 2012 15:29 (thirteen years ago)
lol so my calves are so sore i can barely walk. i'll be more careful in the future.
― horribl ecreature (harbl), Sunday, 26 August 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)
I don't think I'll ever go below a 4mm heel to toe drop on my running shoes. I'm sure anyone could get used to 0 drop shoes, but the transition period is too long and I'm impatient. Really liking my Brookes PureFlow these days. Just picked up a second pair.
― Jeff, Monday, 27 August 2012 11:43 (thirteen years ago)
Feel sort of bad, but not really by skipping my 4 mi recovery run yesterday. I already had 44 miles for the week and this week is my peak mileage week. Thought I would give it a rest before really going for it this week (8, 4, 10, 8, 20, beer)
― Jeff, Monday, 27 August 2012 11:53 (thirteen years ago)
Run today put me over 175 miles for the month!!!!!jdbejdbdnak
That's 74.5 miles more than I have ever run in a month. And best of all, I'm still uninjured. Very tired, but uninjured.
― Jeff, Friday, 31 August 2012 00:32 (thirteen years ago)
I'm celebrating by drinking beer. And then I'll run 20 miles on Saturday.

yeah i'll work on that some more soon. most importantly they are great for weightlifting, i felt a lot stronger just because i was standing flat on my feet. this morning i ran 2 miles outside in normal shoes. it was hot and i was slow.
― horribl ecreature (harbl), Friday, 31 August 2012 19:50 (thirteen years ago)

Did a sweet 6.5m today, Nike+ fucked up but was in and around 55 mins. Love the days when it's effortless.
― Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Friday, 31 August 2012 22:31 (thirteen years ago)
12 miles today in ~90-degree heat. First time I had gone into double figures in at least 6 wks. It did not go well. Struggled to finish. I hope it was just the heat.
― tobo73, Saturday, 1 September 2012 02:38 (thirteen years ago)
Probably the heat. It ruins everything.
― Jeff, Saturday, 1 September 2012 10:29 (thirteen years ago)
Looks like today's 20 is going to be in some storms. I don't mind, really. As long as it isn't storming for the whole 3 or so hours.

Did we talk about Kip Litton anywhere? Absolutely nuts.
http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2012/08/06/120806fa_fact_singer?currentPage=all
On January 11, 2011, a poster called Liptodakip wrote, “Still curious about the west Wyoming marathon. 29 runners total. And he won it. Anyone know anything about it? Is it a real race? The main page is down and now the results are gone. (was up last week). did he make up an entire race? That would be bold!”Yes, it would. And, yes, he did. LetsRun exploded: West Wyoming was Litton’s pièce de résistance, and even his most indignant accusers had to concede their perverse admiration. In this race, the key to winning was ingeniously uncomplicated: Make the whole thing up! For his fabricated marathon, Litton had assembled not only a Web site but also a list of finishers and their times (plus name, age, gender, and home town), and created a phantom race director, who responded to e-mail queries. It occurred to Kyle Strode that six months earlier, when he had raised questions about Litton to “Richard Rodriguez,” the reply (“Wow, that’s quite a scenario!”) had omitted a crucial detail. When Richard Rodriguez looked in the mirror, Litton looked back.

btw nice job dude!
― lag∞n, Sunday, 2 September 2012 16:41 (thirteen years ago)
Thanks!
My 20 went ok yesterday, but my pace was all over the place from 8:20 to 9:30. Really just want even splits around 9:00 m/mile. That put me at 50 miles for the week. Every week from here to the marathon will be less than that. Sort of looking forward to a taper.
― Jeff, Sunday, 2 September 2012 16:50 (thirteen years ago)
So spending nearly 8 hours a week running now, it's really all I can think about. It permeates my brain. I try my best not to talk about it all the time with non-runners, but really it's the focus of everything I'm doing right now.
― Jeff, Sunday, 2 September 2012 16:52 (thirteen years ago)
^ ha u got it bad!
Been on holiday for a week and did a bunch of running there. Decided that today I would jog/walk back home from the caravan we were staying in while my wife drove with the kids. Weather was a bit grotty and I had the wind in my face the whole way, but ended up doing 29.97 miles off-road in 5 hrs 23 mins with 660m of climb. Bummed I missed out on doing the full 30, but fairly happy that I didn't feel too close to death by the time I finished. Bit achey now though mind.
― mod night at the oasis (NickB), Sunday, 2 September 2012 21:29 (thirteen years ago)
Id love to do a run like that but I need to wait till I'm not training for a race.
― Jeff, Sunday, 2 September 2012 21:47 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, that's the thing - I imagine that I won't be able to do very much in the way of exercise for a week or something now because of muscle soreness, so it's totally shot to pieces any consistency I had in my training. Only thing I'm aiming for at the moment though is a marathon next spring so I don't really mind that.
― mod night at the oasis (NickB), Sunday, 2 September 2012 21:57 (thirteen years ago)
i'm getting ready to go on a run again after last friday's disastrous ordeal. i think this time i'll invest in a subtle GPS watch rather than wearing a big phone on my arm.
― Thanks WEBSITE!! (Z S), Sunday, 2 September 2012 22:10 (thirteen years ago)
Probably wise. Do you run with music?
― Jeff, Sunday, 2 September 2012 22:19 (thirteen years ago)
yeah i'm afraid to carry a phone running even though i rarely encounter anyone where i run :(i did this today http://connect.garmin.com/activity/218077652#i think i'm gonna do this interval weekly for a while, it was fun/hard and i learned i can go faster than a 10 minute mile if only for a minute
― horribl ecreature (harbl), Sunday, 2 September 2012 22:25 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I normally run with music! But it's not a big deal to run without. The last few times I ran I was listening to baseball games and the history of rome podcast, anyway.
― Thanks WEBSITE!! (Z S), Sunday, 2 September 2012 23:10 (thirteen years ago)
I dropped music after my 2010 marathon. Have enjoyed running much more since then. Your out there so long, I just get tired of having something in my ears and sounds. Safer too.
― Jeff, Sunday, 2 September 2012 23:51 (thirteen years ago)
Just finished a really good run. Urban running isn't all bad, the stop lights can be good motivators to speed up before they turn red!
― rayuela, Monday, 3 September 2012 00:18 (thirteen years ago)
I use them as breaks. I need all the breaks I can get on a run.
― Jeff, Monday, 3 September 2012 00:29 (thirteen years ago)
If I take a break I usually end up thinking, well, that was enough for today and then I mosey on home
― rayuela, Monday, 3 September 2012 00:51 (thirteen years ago)
I sometimes think that. That's why I run long out and backs, so I may be 10 miles from home when I decide I have enough. Might as well run back.
― Jeff, Monday, 3 September 2012 01:01 (thirteen years ago)
But I do carry can money just in case.
