i just spent like 10 minutes looking for it and cant find it... it was something to the effect of like "i wouldnt call cocorosie racist, id take the tactic of the psychiatrist *steeples fingers* hmm, cocorosie, you are very interested in black people, arent you"

max, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 21:07 (thirteen years ago)

ha yes. i looked, myself.

goole, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 21:09 (thirteen years ago)

Actually to be completely honest I imagine a whole lot of acts have weird mental relationships with blackness / black people that are totally outside the scope of the music, so maybe it's better that Cocorosie at least kinda engage with theirs and occasionally score points for stuff like "sound good with beatboxer." Their issues here are hard to pin down, but I doubt they're more complicated than like "mild fetishization" and possibly a touch of "entranced by stereotypes."

----"entranced by stereotypes."----

hahaha

― tornup_andhurt, Wednesday, March 28, 2007 4:51 PM (5 years ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Haha I think the only adequate approach to take here is that of Cocorosie's psychologist, who would say that while it's not prohibited for white singers to say "nigger," it is (shall we say) "very very interesting" that one would choose to put it in the song, then have to sing it to groups of people every third night for the next few years, then trade your drum loops for beatboxing from your black backing band (haha then get quoted in infamous "Kill Whitey" article), all leading up to a general chin-scratching steeple-fingered "very interesting, Cocorosie, you are very interested in black people."

On Giving Kandi AwayWhen Kandi bracelets are exchanged, there is usually a series of hand gestures symbolizing the units of "PLUR" - Peace, Love, Unity, Respect. The gesture for Peace is to form a peace sign with your index and middle fingers and touch to the fingers of the person receiving the kandi. The gesture for Love is to form a heart by curving your fingers and thumb with the person who is receiving the kandi. The gesture for Unity is to place your palm vertically on the palm of the person who is receiving the kandi. The gesture for Respect is to weave your fingers into the fingers of the person who is receiving the kandi. Then the kandi bracelet is transferred from the owners wrist to the wrist of another, symbolizing the beginning of a friendship.

I used to wear that shit too, but I ain't never heard of no shit like this.

I saw Slaughter in 1991. They dedicated "Fly to the Angels" to the men and women who defended our country in the Persian Gulf.

They also did that thing of substituting "Saddam Hussein" for "Chairman Mao" in their cover of "Revolution".
