why are they called macros btw

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 04:11 (eleven years ago) link

i thought maybe you could go to the home page of these viral macros and block them individually - it would be time-consuming but good for the fb friends who post tons of shit from a few of the same places - but there is no block option on them!

from know your meme:

The term “image macro” was first coined in Something Awful[2] in 2004. In the forums, users could summon a number of default image macros using simple commands like [img – macro], for example, timelines, “Aces!” and “Captain Obvious to the Rescue!” images. The name is derived from the computer scientific definition of a macro: a rule or pattern that specifies how a certain input sequence should be mapped to an output sequence according to a defined procedure. The earliest definition of an image macro was submitted by SomethingAwful forum user Eclipse on February 12th, 2004.

In 2005, the term “image macro” spread across a number of other forums and imageboards, most notably on 4chan where the medium of image macros took on a life of its own. The popularity of image macros in the anonymous community culminated with the birth of LOLcats circa June 2006. While the scope of the term was initially limited to describing images captioned in bold Impact font with white letters and a black outline, its working definition eventually expanded to describe images with superimposed text.

image macros are a ref to the fact it's a recorded or semi-automated process, going back to key macros in software

So if you wanted to make a million funny-text pics you have a macro to just plug in text

Good old software with "record macro" menu item

your native bacon (mh), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 04:17 (eleven years ago) link

yeah imo these facebook meme images (and i guess lolcats and stuff) are a little bit removed from the original meaning of "image macro"—macro originally meaning a stock response, like the reaction images you see on SA or 4chan. obv the definition has expanded though

1staethyr, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 04:26 (eleven years ago) link

more of a macro sense now

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 04:27 (eleven years ago) link

xps yeah i've blocked dumb ppl who do this, but i have a cousin+aunt+uncle who are really lovely ppl i would like to keep up with... but they all post this stuff and then repost each others stuff, it's just this horrible endless loop.

"Say they keep a journal but really don't" makes this sound more and more like some personal ax-grinding list to stick it to those who have snubbed its author (who is not, btw, successful).

Huh, I've never heard of a "to-be" list before, but google gives 984,000 results. Goddamn! Now I know why I'm such an unsuccessful wretch, despite studying Augustus Whiffle's _The Care of the Pig_ every evening.

Successful people: return phone calls

Unsuccessful people: ask for your number for a possible dating scenario and say they're going to call you and even after you google their address and phone number and leave 3 urgent voicemails they still don't call you back forcing you to go over to their house to verify that they are home

see now i would think that fly by their seat of their pants would be a good thing to self-actualizing journal-keepers. but i guess not. you know, spontaneity and all that. though the successful person list is kinda anti-improvisation.

and on the successful list i totally read "exclude joy" at first.

scott seward, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 15:34 (eleven years ago) link

and that list was something a facebook friend of mine put up. i have some scolds on my facebook. same person who posted the thing about how *kids shouldn't ask for anything and they should stop war* manifesto.

enforced excitement/joy/seize the day/stop complaining stuff on facebook or the internet always bugs me. because it really does feel like the person posting it is trying to convince themselves that they aren't miserable.

man, "life coaches." I have a friend who I think seems really self-actualized but was going to career counselor-types (not life coaches) a couple years ago because she wasn't quite feeling it with her job. Now, she has the same job, but she and her husband have three dogs and she runs something like ten miles a day.
