i still don't really get how all you regular cruisers find the dudes who are, like, not straight when just out and about randomly. most of the time when i see someone hott i assume they're str8 (and if i don't it's usually because they're with their bf, ugh)

lex pretend, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

Straight or "straight"?

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Monday, 20 August 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

If they're actually straight, they aren't cruising, so you don't find them.

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Monday, 20 August 2012 20:45 (thirteen years ago)

i meant "men who i would theoretically want to cruise or would respond to if they theoretically cruised me"

which they don't b/c they are usually str8

lex pretend, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:50 (thirteen years ago)

i'm sure cruising happens out in the open, on the street, etc. but most of the cruising i know about takes place in specific semi-public locations

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 20 August 2012 20:54 (thirteen years ago)

i thought cruising happened at gay bars

surm, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:56 (thirteen years ago)

public restrooms, rest areas, hiking trails, parks, adult bookstores, etc etc

now is there like a key, like a signature look - like the "i'm a creep" look ? is it all about the eye contact ? omg so shaday

surm, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:58 (thirteen years ago)

it's kind of fun to be somewhere and have that "this is a cruising spot" flag drop on you.

xp it's bedroom eyes iirc, lots of peoples' bedroom eyes are creepy

turtwig greenturty (Matt P), Monday, 20 August 2012 21:00 (thirteen years ago)

so creeps

surm, Monday, 20 August 2012 21:00 (thirteen years ago)

i mean, i am not the most accomplished cruiser but there is definitely a whole series of nonverbal cues and signals involved, some intuitive, some less so. it can be confusing.

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 20 August 2012 21:00 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, gotcha. I don't know.

I am apparently pretty adept at it cruising - I'm fairly sure that on any given night I could score within an hour in the 1.5 miles between my place and Boystown - but I'm over it and I wish I had even a tiny percentage of that skill for flirting. If communicating with words was a big part of cruising, there wouldn't be much chance for me.

wow i literally have no idea where these would be :/

lex pretend, Monday, 20 August 2012 21:04 (thirteen years ago)

i know j ur good at it

surm, Monday, 20 August 2012 21:06 (thirteen years ago)

One "tell" is the upward-nod, like "'sup," followed by a second look, then a mutual glance as you pass each other.

xp - anywhere, really!

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Monday, 20 August 2012 21:06 (thirteen years ago)

I'm now confused. Is cruising just picking up for sex? Or is it something else entirely?

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 20 August 2012 21:06 (thirteen years ago)

i remember reading a book about body language -- i think published in the 1960s? -- that had a section on gay body language and cruising and it documented specific, predictable cruising 'moves'.

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 20 August 2012 21:07 (thirteen years ago)

cruising involves the take home for sex yes

surm, Monday, 20 August 2012 21:08 (thirteen years ago)

not necessarily! with a lot of cruising, sex happens on-site with no second location involved

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 20 August 2012 21:09 (thirteen years ago)

last thanksgiving i came *this* close to cruising someone. i ran out to the store on tgiving eve to get something for a pie i was baking, but ralph's was for some reason closed. and this younger guy who was standing outside and i locked eyes for like five seconds in that "ok, we both know" way and it was crazy tense but then i just went back up the escalator and went home. also iirc my oven was preheating so it was probably for the best.

Oh man, I'm an even bigger tease than I realized. Looking at guys would be so much easier if one of us wasn't there.

Eric H., Monday, 20 August 2012 21:10 (thirteen years ago)

lex i believe time-honored tradition of sex in public toilets is known in your country as 'cottaging'

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 20 August 2012 21:12 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i am aware of cottaging but tbh i find the idea of sex in public toilets completely gross

lex pretend, Monday, 20 August 2012 21:14 (thirteen years ago)

xpost What is staying at bed and breakfasts called? Drippy rimming?

Eric H., Monday, 20 August 2012 21:15 (thirteen years ago)

i mean, so elma what would you have done had you wanted to proceed with the interaction

surm, Monday, 20 August 2012 21:16 (thirteen years ago)

just like nodded

surm, Monday, 20 August 2012 21:16 (thirteen years ago)

lol elma, i kind of like that

surm, Monday, 20 August 2012 21:16 (thirteen years ago)

elma!

surm, Monday, 20 August 2012 21:16 (thirteen years ago)

i think the main thing, in the book, was the nature of the eye contact, held for longer than normal in passing. then a second glance over the shoulder two steps after you pass. if someone turns to follow the other, it's on.

or if you notice someone following you, you stop to loiter for a second -- like, pretend to look into a store window -- and make eye contact in the reflection as they pass.

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 20 August 2012 21:30 (thirteen years ago)

obviously this was all written in a different time, and i'm sure most cruising happens online now. the old traditions, they are dying.

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 20 August 2012 21:30 (thirteen years ago)

Have you ever grindr'd?

Eric H., Monday, 20 August 2012 21:31 (thirteen years ago)

this is all making me feel weird

surm, Monday, 20 August 2012 21:33 (thirteen years ago)

did u guys hear about this gonnorhea thing recently, that w are running out of medicines to treat it effectively

surm, Monday, 20 August 2012 21:33 (thirteen years ago)

like p soon we won't have treatment that works

surm, Monday, 20 August 2012 21:33 (thirteen years ago)

"then a second glance over the shoulder two steps after you pass. if someone turns to follow the other, it's on."

have always waited 3 steps, no wonder he was never looking.

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Monday, 20 August 2012 21:35 (thirteen years ago)

Someday I want to reenact this scene if someone attempts to cruise me.

Eric H., Monday, 20 August 2012 21:38 (thirteen years ago)

Eric, I posted this elsewhere, but did you know that Duluth just got its first gay bar? This picture makes me chuckle - the club is divided between the American side and the gay side.

i just sometimes wonder how often sex is pretty, like doesn't it get messy

surm, Monday, 20 August 2012 21:40 (thirteen years ago)

i don't know i guess it depends on what u do

surm, Monday, 20 August 2012 21:40 (thirteen years ago)

Some visitors to the club stop in their tracks and say, ‘Wow, this is like what you find in the Twin Cities,’ ” Berg (owner) said.

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Monday, 20 August 2012 21:41 (thirteen years ago)

which is the American side?

a regina spektor is haunting europe (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 20 August 2012 21:46 (thirteen years ago)

I find it hard to believe that is that town's first gay bar.

Eric H., Monday, 20 August 2012 21:47 (thirteen years ago)

I bet there was one when all the millionaires lived there 125 years ago.

Eric H., Monday, 20 August 2012 21:48 (thirteen years ago)

Superior, WI has had one for 6 years, according to the news article I read.

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Monday, 20 August 2012 21:55 (thirteen years ago)

Oh right, they had to cross The Reach in those days.

Eric H., Monday, 20 August 2012 21:56 (thirteen years ago)

i need to see a picture of a tourist in that bar with one foot in America and one foot in Gay.
