I watched an ep of Malcolm in the Middle yesterday and it's bizarrely prescient - Hal/Walt convinces his wife to steal a $10,000 cheque from Malcolm and instead of using it to fix the pipes in the house (PIPES! Didn't Walt go fixing the pipes or the floor in an early ep?) he wants to buy a boat. Little Dewey gets drawn into the scheme and says 'I vote we vote!' a la Jesse last week.

what was jesse's look about when walt was whistling?
'how can you be so inhuman?'?
― skrill xx (cozen), Monday, 20 August 2012 19:54 (thirteen years ago)
Of late, Jesse winds up playing the role of confused/anxious kid caught in the middle of every interpersonal dynamic he's drawn into.
― Old Lunch, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:56 (thirteen years ago)
So I have a feeling that his arc is going to be about him finally getting some agency over the forces around him.
― Old Lunch, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:57 (thirteen years ago)
well he's not really the bad guy. and it took awhile for him to get there but our allegiances as an audience are intended now to be more with jesse than walt

i still kind of find if funny how Walt used to refer to Mike as the psychopath. times change!

yeah he just saw how full of shit walt was saying he hasnt slept and is all torn up over the dead kid
― lag∞n, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:06 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah when Walt said that he was awake all night I was like 'pfft, no you weren't' and then I realised, no, he actually probably wasn't and how did that happen?
― kinder, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:09 (thirteen years ago)
Just watched this - oh, such a good episode. I now think there is no chance Mike is surviving this series. Also, it's perhaps the first ep with Walt being in serious (internal) danger - previously he's been saved by his ability to cook (even if Jesse can do it himself): but now his partners want to leave all he is is an obstacle. I can't think of any way in which everyone wouldn't have been better off if Mike had killed him rather than sellotaping him to a radiator.

[incidentally and PERHAPS SLIGHTLY *SPOILERY*, the last episode of this half-season is called 'gliding over all', and there's a walt whitman poem called 'gliding o'er all'. read it at your peril.― 4'33" (dubstep remix) (Merdeyeux), Monday, August 20, 2012 12:28 PM (25 minutes ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Well, except for Walter. And uh Vince Gilligan and HBO and AMC and you and me and everybody else

don't be dense, you know what he meant
― some dude, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:50 (thirteen years ago)
x-post Well, yes.
Off topic - Walt's circular logic is becoming increasingly obvious. He tells Jesse during the best dinner ever that he has nothing except the business, while of course the reason he has nothing else is because of the business.
Still - for the Empire!
― the so-called socialista (dowd), Monday, 20 August 2012 20:53 (thirteen years ago)
it would have been sort of an asshole-y thing to say - but after that Pinkman could have pointed out Walt's family situation and said "look, this is ruining your family. you need to get out.""yo."

Frequently during (and before, and in other parts of the episode) the dinner scene, Jesse seemed to pass beyond 'awkwaaaard' into terrified. Though there's always been a strong element of fear in their relationship, I felt it was a really strong theme this episode.
― the so-called socialista (dowd), Monday, 20 August 2012 21:01 (thirteen years ago)
sensational
i was thinking about the legacy costs.. can't remember how much the potential stoolies get every month but with another 9 years to go i can't imagine mike would have much left over from 5 mil? possible motivation for agreeing to whatever walt has up his sleeve (well, that and the fact that only walt knows where the methylamine is - though the look on mike's face suggested he would have had little problem doing what was necessary for walt to spill the beans)
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 20 August 2012 22:13 (thirteen years ago)
the opening scene was probably the first time i've felt truly unsettled by the show. i know it's had its moments before, a friend told me she stopped watching after a season or two cos it was too dark, but the dismantling of the bike and the body etc, it was just very emotionally real and unlike how death usually is on tv.

― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 20 August 2012 22:34 (thirteen years ago)
it is almost at the point that i was asking how they're being allowed to make such hard-hitting stuff. i mean dissolving a kid in a barrel of acid ffs.
― Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 20 August 2012 22:35 (thirteen years ago)
I was curious whether they would differentiate in how they treat drug trade death and civilian death, but there was literally no difference.

brilliant music in that scene

avclub review points out that there are a bunch of imitations mentioned in the episode: Miracle Whip for mayo, kelp for cavier, fake pictures of frozen lasagna vs. the actual thing.

― Choogle Image Search (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 02:01 (thirteen years ago)
This episode was so, so well written. And they're doing such a great job depicting Walt as so despicable he makes everyone else look palatable.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 02:23 (thirteen years ago)
he doesnt really want to kill people, can you blame him
Also he especially doesn’t want to kill the brother-in-law of the big boss cop that he has literally just come from having removed from his ass for 24 hours only, if he can avoid it
― ʘ (sic), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 02:28 (thirteen years ago)
dinner scene was so excruciating. I could only get through it by staring at Jesse and pretending he was wearing a White Noise - An Electric Storm tshirt.
― wk, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 06:29 (thirteen years ago)
i don't really understand and am maybe a bit disappointed by the way they seem to toy with the corniness of walt's kingpin megalomania - obv it has to reach a dramatic crescendo but like idk, swirling a glass of whisky alone on your throne saying "i'm about empires" or the scarface refs, i know this show doesnt always have the lightest touch but guh why? it undercuts the whole journey of it being walt and his own personal life vengeances rather than anyone else and their generic gangster tv ones
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 07:49 (thirteen years ago)
another great bit of casting for the declan guy, immediately intriguing
didnt recognise the actor but kinda budget gabriel byrne with a bit of hugh jackman in there sorta thing?
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 07:58 (thirteen years ago)
i enjoyed that last week's preview made it look like somebody else discovered that kid's body and then this week that scene was in the intro
breaking bad isn't 'mad men' level misleading promo, but it still manages to keep you on your toes
― kaygee, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 08:03 (thirteen years ago)
Best episode so far this season.
― cue "White Rabbit" (kenan), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 08:25 (thirteen years ago)
Like eating a scab.
They didn't kill Todd either. Mike doesn't just pile bodies up for the sake of it, and he doesn't consider Walt himself to be a danger, just working with Walt. Also killing Walt would probably give Mike a Jesse problem.

Because Walt's high on himself right now and totally playing up that corniness, "robbin' a train" etc.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 09:09 (thirteen years ago)
ya but like i say the basic fundamental premise of the show is the juxtaposition of mr chips and scarface - simply losing the former to the latter so literally and basically seems probably the least interesting take on it imo
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 09:52 (thirteen years ago)
Mr Chips will be back.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 09:57 (thirteen years ago)
i thought the extra stuff about his old chemistry company was quite nicely done.
― Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 09:58 (thirteen years ago)
yeah and for me it's like OK nice, that's settled - we don't need to keep that stuff sacred and secret, like it's his Rosebud. we can get on with the Tragedy of Walter White.
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 10:09 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah I thought that as well, it kind of explains why Walt has been so maniacally driven. There's still a reveal there as to why he sold out and left, but I can only assume it's family-related.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 11:38 (thirteen years ago)
isn't it to do with that couple who offered him the treatment money? he had a fling with the woman iirc
― nashwan, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 11:48 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, he conveniently elides over the fact that the rift was his doing.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 11:50 (thirteen years ago)
Just watch, Grey Matter will turn out to be a giant meth operation, too.
I hope this show doesn't end with a montage set to an ironic song of all the regular people cooking and using meth behind closed doors.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 11:53 (thirteen years ago)
This stage of the game is about Walt's megalomania (which we've been aware of from very early on) starting to break through to the surface. And knowing who Walt is, naturally it's going to manifest as cliches. Because for all of his brilliance and sociopathic tendencies, he's still largely clueless about what it truly means to be a sustainable criminal kingpin. Walt's self-image and reality haven't quite merged fully, and once they do, I guarantee it won't last long.
― Old Lunch, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 11:55 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, he's only morphed in his own mind. Part of his arrogance stems from his ignorance; he's been teetering on the brink of death longer than he knows, but surviving cancer has given him a false sense of strength (just as his past failures have given him a false sense of entitlement). But for sure, whatever Walt has planned, Mike must be thinking of ways to take him out at this point. Of course, this show being this show, I still predict Mike will not make it out of this mini-season alive. Alas. Maybe Todd will kill him?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 21 August 2012 12:38 (thirteen years ago)
didn't she want to be with him and he flaked?
