Thanks IK! That must be "convenient"... Just deciding, as a whole profession, to "not do" diaeresis... o_O

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

if they can just write (for example) schoenberg instead, it's alright

excluding altogether is a bit crap

A.R.R.Y. Kane (nakhchivan), Monday, 20 August 2012 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

I guess I hadn't noticed before English media always wrote Van NistelrooY instead of what it really is, Van Nistelrooij. Bizarre.

But maybe as a Dutch guy here I am used to comply to how other nations/languages write their names etc and copy that. When I said to my English gf we were going to "Bretagne" on holiday (instead of "Brittany"), and that we could spend some time in "Par-y" (Paris) she looked at me all disgusted and said I sounded incredibly posh.

The relationship survived this sordid affair though. Back to the fitba.

not just the media. it was on his shirt and i assume he had some say in the matter

mizzell, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:29 (thirteen years ago)

I have no idea how the Spanish basketball guy LLULL is supposed to be pronounced - during the Olympics the commentators seemed to have settled for 'Yule'

Ismael Klata, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:32 (thirteen years ago)

Nah, he was typically Dutch in that, I am 100% positive. The ManU shirt guy told him "no no, Ruud, we write a 'y' at the end", and he would be a-ok with it. Like all Dutch people. Not saying I condone it, but I understand, because the Dutch always comply to foreign things like this. Which I actually prefer over the English/Muricans saying 'Brittany', 'Par-y' tbh

xp

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:32 (thirteen years ago)

Not 'Par-y", the british say Paris, is what I meant

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:33 (thirteen years ago)

A double 'l' in Spanish is a 'j', so that would make sense.

xxp

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:34 (thirteen years ago)

god we really should have gone all out to sign Fellaini

Number None, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:35 (thirteen years ago)

yeah Fellaini is such a likeable player

all the worlds a stage and kitty's just stepped into the spotlight (cajunsunday), Monday, 20 August 2012 19:36 (thirteen years ago)

It's the second 'Ll' in 'Llull' that gets me though, wtf are you supposed to do with that?

Ismael Klata, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:41 (thirteen years ago)

De Gea is keeping us in this

Number None, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:41 (thirteen years ago)

yup. fantastic saves today. fellaini looking the best player on the pitch at the moment.

wmlynch, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

who is this de gea guy

skrill xx (cozen), Monday, 20 August 2012 19:46 (thirteen years ago)

da guy, eh?

EZ Snappin, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:47 (thirteen years ago)

Zjuzj, is how I'd pronounce it. Same rule applies more or less for a double 'l' at the end.

But don't quote me on it, I only had two years of Spanish language at uni and spent most time in the canteen drinking coffee with fellow deadbeats tbh

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:49 (thirteen years ago)

we don't put 'only' in that sentence over here

Ismael Klata, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:53 (thirteen years ago)

Shoot me know iirc

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:54 (thirteen years ago)

speaking of pronunciation issues, most people seem to be getting Kagawa's name wrong

Number None, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:54 (thirteen years ago)

struggling to think how else to say it tbh

Ismael Klata, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:57 (thirteen years ago)

The stress should be on second syllable, right?

boxall, Monday, 20 August 2012 19:58 (thirteen years ago)

apparently not. He said in an interview it's Ka-ga-wa

Number None, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:01 (thirteen years ago)

double 'L' in spanish is more like the 'lli' in 'million', or the 'y' in 'young' - eg. calle = caye, david villa = viya. the 'j'/'zh' sound for a double 'L' is used in argentina - so 'pollo' (chicken) would be pronounced 'pojo'.

Chris, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

that's not helping with that second Ll in Llull though

Ismael Klata, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:05 (thirteen years ago)

Kagawa weights his passes beautifully.

boxall, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:07 (thirteen years ago)

woohoo!

EZ Snappin, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

deserved. Van Persie time then?

Number None, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:16 (thirteen years ago)

Quite possible, there is no football player I love more than Fellaini

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:16 (thirteen years ago)

Don't think RVP could do anything here tbh, there's no feeding the box

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)

<3 Fellaini

Ismael Klata, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)

omg Cleverly, what a chance

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

Who's the Scottish (sounding) commentator on Sky?

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)

I think it's Davie Provan

Ismael Klata, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

I love Kagawa already btw, he's fantastic

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:37 (thirteen years ago)

he's been the only bright spot

Number None, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

Kagawa looks good enough to play for Everton.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

Loving Hibbert tonight too. For some odd reason I have a lot of love for this rather dull game.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:41 (thirteen years ago)

I'm not finding it dull at all.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:42 (thirteen years ago)

Mm, well I do a bit, it's the beast unable to force a break (ManU) against Everton. Loving Everton though tbh.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:46 (thirteen years ago)

ManU isn't trying very hard, it seems. Waiting for them to wake up.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

there's no comparison between omitting accents and employing old national terms for places

all of the major languages do the latter...mailand/cologne/parigi/londres etc

A.R.R.Y. Kane (nakhchivan), Monday, 20 August 2012 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

After a summer watching MLS I'm learning to appreciate superior effort when the talent might be lacking. Everton working their asses off.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

good lads Everton

Ismael Klata, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:53 (thirteen years ago)

cracking match that

r|t|c, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:53 (thirteen years ago)

i really like everton

mizzell, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:54 (thirteen years ago)

fellaini is a fucking horrible player

A.R.R.Y. Kane (nakhchivan), Monday, 20 August 2012 20:54 (thirteen years ago)

cattermole should do him

A.R.R.Y. Kane (nakhchivan), Monday, 20 August 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

he's yaya touré-esque in the same way leon osman is andres iniesta-esque

A.R.R.Y. Kane (nakhchivan), Monday, 20 August 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

christ, knew it was going to be tough but that was completely gutless. The rest of the team should apologise to Kagawa

Number None, Monday, 20 August 2012 20:56 (thirteen years ago)

ya i was wondering how much of this love-in could recall how much of a little git fellaini is
