point stands, Mike talks boss talk but all you gotta do for Mike to let you off the hook is ask nicely

Can someone explain Skyler's anger at Walt for telling Marie about the affair? IIRC Walt was thinking on his feet when pressed by Marie about Skyler's breakdown... Marie was really putting the screws in and it seemed to satisfy her. What was the alternative? I feel like I'm missing something v. obv. here.
― Hadrian VIII, Monday, 20 August 2012 13:01 (thirteen years ago)
Walt made sure that Marie thought the problem with their marriage was Skyler's doing. Skyler is understandably upset when this revelation comes to light, on top of everything else she's shouldering, particularly when pretty much all of the major problems in her life are Walt-derived.
― Old Lunch, Monday, 20 August 2012 13:11 (thirteen years ago)
I mean, imagine you were on the verge of a breakdown because your significant other was a shitty person but in a way you could never discuss with anyone. And then your significant other tells someone in your family that you're on the verge of a breakdown because of something shitty you did.
― Old Lunch, Monday, 20 August 2012 13:13 (thirteen years ago)
i dont think theres anything ur missing. ideally walt shouldve told skyler he used that to cover for the way she acted in front of hank & marie but obv they arent exactly communicating as calm, rational ppl and shed be pissed abt it regardless prob..
having it come back 2 her from marie, esp @ the pt when shes maybe really abt to confess real shit to her (prob not really but a statement like 'if u only knew, etc, youd never talk 2 me again' is some classic self-involved & martyr-ish shit) is gonna rankle sky to no end
yeah, word
― johnny crunch, Monday, 20 August 2012 13:14 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah I don't know if I'm buying that...what else could he have said? Besides, who gives a shit what Marie thinks? Doesn't make sense that Skyler would be worried abt Marie's condemnation. Historically she's shrewder than that, more likely she'd spin it back, "Yeah, I fucked Ted because stress cancer money etc. and anyway Walt can't satisfy me anymore, he has to wear a fedora to get it up...."
Marie's understanding in last night's ep was predicatable. People have affairs.
― Hadrian VIII, Monday, 20 August 2012 13:25 (thirteen years ago)
xpost yeah, Walt should have let Skyler know he told her, he underestimated Marie's nagging/prying
― Hadrian VIII, Monday, 20 August 2012 13:26 (thirteen years ago)
It just seems like in the general scheme of things:
Murder>>Meth Empire>>Massive tax fraud>>new baby>>canver>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>fucking Ted
― Hadrian VIII, Monday, 20 August 2012 13:28 (thirteen years ago)
"cancer."
well, i think theres a part of it that shes using it as a chip against walt too, was caught off guard coming home & finding jesse there, plus shes just generally on edge right now & was downing wine
i suspect she doesnt care as much abt marie knowing of the affair
― johnny crunch, Monday, 20 August 2012 13:31 (thirteen years ago)
Probably true, yes
― Hadrian VIII, Monday, 20 August 2012 13:33 (thirteen years ago)

when Walt told Marie about the affair i just assumed instantly it was for selfish reasons. he could have made up any excuse - but he picked the thing that would most make him look like a victim and Skylar the bad guy. and there's no doubt in my mind he wanted to punish her too. not even for the affair but for her behaviour.
― Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 20 August 2012 14:17 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, the crux of the Skyler/Marie scene isn't that she's perturbed about Marie's knowledge of her affair but rather that she's pertubed by the extent to which she's being used as a pawn by someone who's already pervaded and ruined almost every aspect of her life. As if that level of ruination isn't enough, now he's trying to spin the narrative against her and taint her in the one healthy part of her life that's left.
There's an interesting parallel between that scene and the one where Jesse hears Walt whistling. They're both peeks behind the curtain of lies and manipulation, just at different points in spectrum of realization of just how far gone Walt is.

― lag∞n, Monday, 20 August 2012 14:38 (thirteen years ago)
anyway whats walts plan, seems like diluting the methlamine would be the way to go except they already gave them a non watered down sample, the rational thing would just be to work w/the people from phoenix and as part of the deal have them buy jesse n mike out, thats prob what walt is proposing but really hes just gonna kill them, the empire business etc
― lag∞n, Monday, 20 August 2012 14:40 (thirteen years ago)
love the way they're priming the endgame here; i was afraid it was gonna be all slow burn or some Sopranos-y web of paranoia and discomfort but they're making this a legit thriller that still maintains dark comedy and procedural

Yes, I say I can't wait to see more Mike putting guns to people's faces, then exhaling and putting it away. Only time so far he's been comfortable pulling the trigger has been on one of his own men!
― pplains, Monday, 20 August 2012 15:15 (thirteen years ago)
well it helps the odds if the guy you're pulling on is the star of the show! but your point stands, they've somewhat painted themselves into a corner with Mike as tough guy when he's got such a blind spot and pushover nature when walt is concerned
― "Batshit crazy," the foam clog tycoon said. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 20 August 2012 15:18 (thirteen years ago)
thats just mikes character i think is the point

its not like the show tried and failed to deliver a badass hitman
― lag∞n, Monday, 20 August 2012 15:20 (thirteen years ago)
At this point, I think Mike would've let Krazy-8s off the hook.

he doesnt really want to kill people, can you blame him
― lag∞n, Monday, 20 August 2012 15:27 (thirteen years ago)
if you look back to mikes first big turn his half measures speech its all there, that sort of thinking isnt necessary if youre a cold blooded killer, and keep in mind the whole story was about protecting someone, not something yr everyday sociopath loses too much sleep over
― lag∞n, Monday, 20 August 2012 15:29 (thirteen years ago)
mike maybe wants to be this decisive all business criminal, he certainly wants to project that image, but really he just wants everything to run smoothly and to not be bothered
― lag∞n, Monday, 20 August 2012 15:31 (thirteen years ago)
This might be reaching, slightly, but I would also guess that Mike is generally more aware of the fact that Walt has a family (and therefore more hesitant to take that ultimate step) than Walt is himself, at this point.
― Old Lunch, Monday, 20 August 2012 15:36 (thirteen years ago)
If anything, Mike should know by now Walt's family would be better off without him.
― pplains, Monday, 20 August 2012 15:37 (thirteen years ago)
xpost
Which Walt is totally aware of and willing to exploit as a "weakness" (see also: glomming on to the fact that Jesse is likely to get in the middle of any conflict he has with Mike and save his bacon).
― Old Lunch, Monday, 20 August 2012 15:38 (thirteen years ago)
I'm sure Lydia's kid is arguably better off without her, too, but that didn't put a damper on the softer side of Mike.
― Old Lunch, Monday, 20 August 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)
"You will be made whole. Unless making you whole would involve actually hurting somebody, I can't be doing that, but you will be made whole." --Mike, to his dudes in lockup

episode was ok but the way Walt was left alone in the warehouse at the crucial moment was so contrived. it's not like some emergency came up, Mike knew he had to go meet Saul, wouldn't he just get someone to watch over Walt for an hour? you spend the entire night with him and then you're like "welp, gotta go, let me tie you up with this flimsy plastic thing."
― dmr, Monday, 20 August 2012 16:47 (thirteen years ago)
or just handcuff both hands
― lag∞n, Monday, 20 August 2012 16:48 (thirteen years ago)
also why did he need to have that meeting w/hank if hed already lost his trail
― lag∞n, Monday, 20 August 2012 16:49 (thirteen years ago)
btw i saw an ep of the mentalist last night where hank played a cop
i think maybe the lazy handcuffing was suposed to demonstrate mikes habitual underestimation of walt, which will eventually kill him
― lag∞n, Monday, 20 August 2012 16:51 (thirteen years ago)
I thought the point was that Mike WAS still being tailed all the time and the temporary restraining order bought him 24 hours with no tail (but once that 24 hours is over they will be trying to nail him twice as hard)
― dmr, Monday, 20 August 2012 16:55 (thirteen years ago)
^yeah, i believe that was what happened, so he could have that time to do the deal and settle all his accounts before leaving town

xp well considering he was planning on doing a deal that involved presumably carting a thousand gallons of methylamine behind his car, he probably decided he was better safe than sorry.
so, on the innacurate prognostication front, i guess walt is going to try to get into business with mike's contacts?
